An air source heat pump system for hot water supply was developed and tested in the calroimeter chamber. Cycle simulation to predict the performance of the heat pump system which was operated at standard and very cold climate condition. Vapor injection was applied to the heat pump running at standard outdoor condition and its effects on the performance of the heat pump were investigated in detail. Casecade cycle operated at very cold climate condition was analyed through the simulation which was veryfied by experimental results.

Global trends of technology related to low GWP refrigerants in refirgeration and air conditioning industry are reviewed. Especially, laws and regulations such as F-gas regulation of European Union to control the use of conventional high GWP refrigerant are surveyed in detail. And the markets which should reflect the current situation with alternative working fluid is reviewed and estimated for future trend. Several new products like centrifugal chillers and developing technologies using very low GWP refrigerant are introduced.

Fluid flow and structural analyses of an electronic expansion valve (EEV) using CO2 as a working refrigerant are carried out to estimate the mass flow rate and maximum stress. An engineering sample EEV that the orifice diameter is 1.8 mm was fabricated. The mass flow rates were measured at various EEV inlet temperatures and pressures for several EEV openings using experimental heat pump system. The sample EEV has over 35 ㎫ burst pressure and the maximum mass flow rate of CO2 through the EEV increased to 100 g/s at full opening condition.

An air source heat pump system producing the ice and water storage energy for cooling and heating of building has been proposed. Cycle design and simulation considering energy balance between heating and cooling capacity has been carried out. The roles of the capacity controlled compressor, refrigerant heating device and air preheating are investigated in detail. System control logic for meeting the predetermined heating capacity when the system is operated at cold climate condition is suggested. Some anticipated problems of the proposed system are also described.

We presented the correlation about the mass flow rate of CO2 refrigerant through electronic expansion valves(EEVs) in previous study, which showed the about average absolute deviation of 4.2%. In this study, the correlation was improved by adding more experimental results and the average absolute deviation of the correlation was reduced to 2.8%. This new correlation was used to design the geometry of needle to control the mass flow rate of refrigerant more linearly according to the valve opening.

A simple transient simulation of ground source heat pump system was carried out to investigate the effects of ground thermal conductivity on its performance. The TRNSYS code with a simple water to water heat pump model was used to compare the COP variation of the system. A new ground heat exchanger called by semi-closed loop was proposed and constructed in the real site. The effective thermal conductivity was measured using the test equipment developed by according to the line source model. The simulation results showed that highly efficient thermal conductivity of the grout material could increase the performance of the heat pump system very well. And the new ground heat exchanger showed the increased effective thermal conductivity as the penetration water flow rate(PWFR) was increased. Therefore, the performance improvement of the heat pump system using the proposed ground heat exchanger can be expected.

The performance test of components for CO2 heat pump system has been conducted. An electronic expansion valve(EEV) and a 4-way valve which developed by domestic companies are installed in experimental heat pump system. Almost same mass flow characteristics by comparing with the previous results are obtained when the 4-way is used. Therefore, developed components can be operated in real heat pump system. But modification of suggested correlation for predicting mass flow through EEV is necessary to widen the application range.

Performance test for an air conditioning system using thermal storage tank as a heat source was carried out. Refrigerant pump and water cooled heat exchanger were equipped in this system and refrigerant flow direction had been reversed comparing to normal vapor compression cycle. In the test, the suggested system was worked well as an air conditioner. And optimal refrigerant charging amount was found to be 7 kg in this system. The energy efficiency ratio(EER) of the system was varied with the condensing temperature determined by thermal storage tank. More than 10.0 of EER value was easily obtained in this system when cooling water temperature from thermal storage tank was sustained below 8℃.
