IL-9 is a known T cell growth factor with pleiotropic immunological functions, especially in parasite infection and colitis. However, its role in tumor growth is controversial. In this study, we generated tumor clones expressing the membrane-bound form of IL-9 (MB-IL-9) and investigated their influences on immune system. MB-IL-9 tumor clones showed reduced tumorigenicity but shortened survival accompanied with severe body weight loss in mice. MB-IL-9 expression on tumor cells had no effect on cell proliferation or major histocompatibility complex class I expression in vitro. MB-IL-9 tumor clones were effective in amplifying CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and increasing cytotoxic activity against CT26 cells in vivo. We also observed a prominent reduction in body weights and survival period of mice injected intraperitoneally with MB-IL-9 clones compared with control groups. Ratios of IL-17 to interferon (IFN)-γ in serum level and tumor mass were higher in mice implanted with MB-IL-9 tumor clones than those observed in mice implanted with control cells. These results indicate that the ectopic expression of the MB-IL-9 on tumor cells exerts an immune-stimulatory effect with toxicity. To exploit its benefits as a tumor vaccine, a strategy to control the toxicity of MB-IL-9 tumor clones should be developed.
Effect of 3 - aminobenzamide on DNA Replication in CHO Cells Exposed to MMS

Effects of 3-aminobenzamide (3AB) on DNA replication was investigated in CHO cells treated with MMS by alkaline sucrose gradient sedimentation analysis. The inhibitor produced a dose-dependent decrease in the rate of DNA replication. The inhibitor did not seem to affect the specific step of DNA replication, but decreased the number of active replicon, which can accomplish DNA replication. Since 3-AB increased MMS-induced DNA strand breaks and significantly retarded the rejoining of strand breaks, we examined the possibility that single strand breaks enhanced by 3-AB may influence the pattern of DNA replication in the presence of MMS.
Korean University EFL Learners' Perceptions Perceptions of Classroom Language Learning Experiences

Using qualitative research data drawn from 46 EFL learners in a Korean university setting, this research investigated learner perceptions of language learning experiences. In order to elicit respondents' written reflections on their language-learning processes, open-ended questions were employed. Analyses of the data yielded results regarding the following two factors: (1) respondents' perceptions of language learning activities or tasks; (2) respondents' perceived success or failure as language students. The results were discussed in terms of attribution theory, as advocated by Weiner.

The atoms located at a general position in a crystal do thermally ellipsoidal vibration satisfying 1-fold rotation symmetry. Likewise the thermal vibration of atom at special position must comply with the symmetry of the special position. This paper shows how to calculate the anisotropic temperature factors of the atoms located at special positions. 결정내(結晶內)에 있는 원자(原子)들이 일반위치(一般位置)에 놓이면 그 원자(原子)들은 1-fald rotation symmetry를 갖는 열적(熱的)인 ellipsoid의 운동(運動)을 한다. 마찬가지로 special position에 놓인 원자(原子)는 special position의 대칭(對稱)에 맞는 열적운동(熱的運動)을 하여야 한다. 이 paper에서는 special position에 놓인 원자(原子)의 비등방성온도인자(非等方性溫度因子)의 계산방법(計算方法)을 보였다.

Nowadays the college has been asked for the execution of the role which can satisfy the individual. social, and national claims and which can contribute to their development. Up to now the colleges in our community present the significant studies and the solutions to take care of the rapidly changing educational situation. Halla College which is the only private school built by a native of Cheju has performed the central part to develope the community of Cheju on a basis of about thirty-year-history. It also changed all the course of the educational management into the Students-Centered System by introducing the HAK-GWA-CHAEK-IM-JE, that is, the professors of each major department have to be responsible for the entrance, obtaining qualifications, getting jobs and leading graduates' education. On the ground of this necessity this study presents the ways that can improve the educational competition and make a contribution to the development of our community by analyzing their characteristics and consciousness of our college students through the 891 answered-questionaries of the 1200 investigated from on May 30 to on June 20 in 1997 to reflect their public opinion.
Teaching English Overseas: From EFL Instructor's Perspectives

Given the noteworthy increase in the number of native-born English-speaking EFL instructors teaching overseas, this research examined 6 American EFL instructors who had taught English abroad with special reference to their experience as foreigner instructors in their respective host countries. With the use of interviews as the major technique employed, this research was centered on identifying conflicts or difficulties the research participants encountered as novice instructors, both internal and external to the classroom settings of their host countries. Research findings revealed that the current participants were not adequately prepared to cope with new and unfamiliar physical settings of their host countries, or to familiarize themselves with their new classroom settings and students. Studying the various the conflicts which native EFL instructors encountered, both internal and external to the classroom environment, will hopefully shed light on, and provide a more accurate portrayal of EFL professionals' teaching overseas and may provide possible insights into potential solutions to them. Furthermore, the research findings were considered and discussed in terms of acculturation theory.
Toward a Conceptual Clarification of Foreign Language Anxiety

Despite the noteworthy increase in the number of FL anxiety studies, inconsistencies associated with the effects of FL anxiety on language learner performance have been reported in literature. Such conflicting results seem to be attributable in part to unstable conceptualization of the FL anxiety construct and its measure. This paper purported to address the emerging call for a theoretical clarification of the construct at hand as a preface to a clear picture of language anxiety on a conceptual ground. This paper not only covers aspects of general anxiety from psychological perspectives, but examines how FL anxiety and its associated concepts have been conceptualized in the literature. Inconsistent results that pertain to FL learning were also delineated. Given the drawbacks found in the exiting theories of FL anxiety, several points were taken into account for a refinement of the conceptual framework. This attempt will hopefully shed new light on the construct per se and prove conducive to the development of the field of English education.
