Purpose: We investigated whether oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) results in changes in the protein expression of neuronal and inducible nitric oxide synthases (nNOS and iNOS, respectively) in rat model of OIR. In addition, we evaluated whether treatment of rats with triamcinolone acetonide (TA) prevents this response. Methods: To promote OIR, Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to hyperoxia from postnatal day 2 (P2) to P14. They were then returned to normoxia after P15. TA was injected into the right vitreous of P15 rats, while saline was injected into the left vitreous. At P18 the expression of nNOS and iNOS was determined using Western blotting and immunostaining techniques in retinas obtained from control rats. Results: In P18 OIR rats, the abundance of nNOS and iNOS protein was significantly increased compared with controls. These increases were not observed in the retinas of rats treated with TA. The change in expression of nNOS and iNOS were specific to parvalbumin and glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive cells. Treatment with TA prevented the increased expression of nNOS and iNOS in all samples. Conclusions: Hypoxia upregulates expression of nNOS and iNOS in OIR rat retinas, which is can be prevented by treatment with TA.

Diffuse or focal white matter hyperintensity lesions on MRI have been reported in only a few patients with Hashimoto’s encephalopathy (HE), and anti-TPO antibody level is high in most cases. We report a 59-year-old woman who presented with acute onset of disorientation with confusion. Anti-thyroglobulin antibody was detected in high titer, although anti-TPO antibody titer was not high. Thyroid sonography and biopsy revealed Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Initial fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) image and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) revealed ill-defined, diffuse, high-signal intensity lesions on the deep white matters and globus pallidus. Brain SPECT showed significant hypoperfusion in both basal ganglia (especially globus pallidus), frontal and temporal lobes. With the impression of HE, the patient was treated on a high-dose steroid. Over the next 15 weeks, her cognition improved to a nearly normal state and the MRI findings on DWI and FLAIR showed resolution paralleling her clinical improvement. Our case illustrates the peculiar changes in the MR findings, especially in DWI, with hypoperfusion on brain SPECT in patients with HE and allows for a greater understanding of the pathophysiology of HE.
I-11 : Homogenization of drop stain by radial electroosmotic flow in an evaporating drop

Non-uniform distribution of solute in an evaporating drop placed on a solid surface is an important problem in TAS technology. This phenomenon can be observed in microarray and matrix systems used for analyzing DNA and protein samples. When a sample drop on a solid surface evaporates, the transport of solute caused by the outward radial flow near the drop surface yields a ring-shaped stain on the solid surface. The contact line pinning and the diffusion limited evaporation might contribute to the outward migration of solute. Such localization of solute may hinder accurate analysis of drop sample, and it is desirable to devise a scheme for homogenizing the solute distribution inside a drop. In this work we study the utility of electroosmosis as an effective mean for controlling the drop stain. The electric field developed between the center and the circular electrode placed along the drop rim causes an EOF. By changing the polarity and the applied voltage we can control the strength and direction of the radial electroosmotic flow, and thus we can modify the solute distribution inside the drop. Detailed experimental results along with theoretical analysis will be presented.
