The three main physiological functions of nose are air-conditioning, filtering and smelling. Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. In our laboratory, there have been a series of experimental investigations on the nasal airflowin normal and deformed nasal cavity models by PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In thisarticle airflow inside nasal cavity with maximal sinus is investigated both experimentally by PIV and numerically by the FVM general purpose code. Thin sliced CT data and meticulous refinement of model surface under the ENT doctor’s advice provided more sophisticated nasal cavity models. We also introduced asemi-automatic segmentation technique to reconstruct accurate three dimensional computer models from CT data rapidly and conveniently. The model is created by the combination of Rapid Prototyping and solidification of clear silicone. The Network-based communication system between multi-researchers and medical doctors is established for making the post-surgery models and discussions for surgery plans.
