Colorblind Racism and Herrenvolk Republicanism: Contesting American Democracy in Octavia Butler’s Kindred

This article explores the racialized historical continuity between the colorblind racist culture of the post-civil rights era and the formation of American democracy in the antebellum nineteenth century in Octavia Butler’s Kindred. The novel represents the 1970s as a culture where colorblind, neoliberal market universalism is prevalent and the 1830s as a germinal era of Herrenvolk republicanism. While the novel’s antebellum scenes correspond to the time when the political meaning of race underwent significant changes in American history, the 1970s alludes to the outset of the new racial system, a new political invention in the post-Civil Rights Movement United States. Such historical references to race and American democracy represented in Kindred illuminate the contradictory nature of American democracy and its political doctrine that have persisted throughout US history. Dana’s time travel is a rhetorical device to disclose the invisible continuity between these historical eras, illuminating the racist nature of American democracy and allegedly post-racial society. Through the alignment of democratic nation-building in the antebellum nineteenth century and its colorblind re-regimentation in modern US culture, the time travel in Kindred racializes the post-racial America where white supremacist polities have invented new meanings of race in order to maintain color lines. This trans-historical space shares with the novel’s literary ancestors, Richard Wright’s Native Son and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, a common concern for the adequacy of the novel genre in representing racial experience, locating itself within the formal tradition of modern African American literature.

Human Error in the Automatic Bolus Tracking System of Case Results in CT Scanning

We therefore aimed to identify the cause of failure of CT due to an error in BTS andto suggest an appropriate preventive method. Subjects underwent BTS-CT angiography andabdominal examinations in two university hospitals using a 64-detector CT scanner. An automaticBTS was used to time the start of the scanning when the injected contrast medium reached thethreshold level in the ROI. Errors in bolus tracking were divided into patient-related and machinerelatederrors. Among 2,000 patients who underwent BTS-CT, error was observed in 15 cases, inwhich the bolus tracking timing was shifted as a result of movement of the patient or respiratorychanges due to the rapid injection of contrast medium, which led to CT failure. To reduce CT-BTSfailures, the patient's position and the change in the position of the blood vessels due to the patient'sbreathing pattern should be carefully considered, and the ROI should be set to a sufficiently smallarea in the blood vessel.

조영제 증강 CT 검사 환자에서 eGFR 을 적용한 부작용 분석

The purpose of this study was to investigate creatinine and estimated glomerular filtrationrate (eGFR) in patients with CT using eGFR, and to provide a baseline data to prevent contrastinduced nephropathy (CIN) To provide basic data. Patients who visited the hospital for CTexamination were injected with contrast medium and examined for side effects. Contrast mediuminjection rate, injection rate, adverse reations, type of contrast agent, sex, and creatinine were enteredinto eGFR. The study of side effects of contrast media was conducted with the consent of thepatients and the adverse effects following contrast injection were investigated according to the studyethics guidelines. Twenty-four patients with adverse drug reactions were included in the CT scan. Contrast medium was injected from a minimum of 80 ml to a maximum of 120 ml, and the injectionrate per second was from 1.7 ml·s-1 to 4.5 ml·s-1. Among the patients, creatinine was measuredvariously according to the patient. In regression analysis of creatinine according to eGFR,R2 showed a distribution of 0.747 and showed a linear relationship of inverse. We investigated retrospectivelythe creatinine and eGFR of patients with CT using eGFR to prevent side effects of contrastagents and provide basic data. In the case of adverse effects in the CT contrast agent, eGFRshowed an inverse linear relationship in regression analysis according to creatinine.

최근 우리나라의 암 발생률은 꾸준히 증가추세에 있고 그 중에서도 전립선암은 갑상선암을 제외했을 때 남성에서 가장 높은 증가 추세를 보이고 있는 암이다. 전립선암은 그 동안 선진국에서 주로 발병하는 것으로 알려진 암 종이지만 서구화된 식습관과 생활 행태 변화로 인하여 국내에서도 발생률이 증가하는 것으로 추정하고 있다. 따라서 국내 환경에 맞는 내장 지방 분포와 같은 정확한 비만도 측정을 통해 우리나라에서 증가율 1위를 보이고 있는 전립선암 발생의 원인 관계를 찾고자 한다. 본 연구는 환자와 정상군 비교를 하는 환자-대조군 연구이고 본 연구를 위하여 임상시험 윤리위원회 (IRB) 승인을 받았다 (NCC2014-0124). 환자군은 2014년 8월 1일부터 2015년 1월 6일 까지 국립암센터를 방문하여 전립선암을 진단받고 수술과 항암치료 그리고 방사선 치료를 시작하지 않은 초진을 대상으로 하였고, 정상군은 2009년 11월부터 2014년 9월 30일까지 공단검진을 목적으로 국립암센터를 방문한 정상인을 대상으로 하였다. 전립선암 연구는 환자 총 52명에 평균 66세 (51 - 82세)이고 정상군은 총 50명에 평균 64세 (59 - 75세) 이다. 모든 연구 대상자들의 생활 요인 평가를 위하여 암 가족력, 흡연, 음주 상태, 운동, 등을 추가적으로 설문 조사하였다. MRI 영상의 배꼽 주위에서의 내장 지방과 피하지방을 전용 분석 컴퓨터를 활용하여 측정 하였다. 복부비만율은 환자군과 정상군에서뿐만 아니라 (p = 0.03), 전립선암 악성도와 (Gleasonscore; p = 0.001)도 통계적 차이를 나타냈다. 하지만 BMI 결과와는 전립선암 발생과 악성도에서 무관함을 보인 것에 반해 허리둘레는 전립선암의 발생에 영향을 미치는 결과를 나타났다. 한편 전립선암의 또 다른 악성도 지표인 PSA는 비만 측정치와의 상관성이 Gleason score와 보다 대체적으로 낮게 나타났다. 학력, 운동량, 흡연, 음주 상태와 같은 생활 특성에 따른 전립선암 발생의 영향 관계는 뚜렷하지 않았다. 결론적으로 본 연구를 통해서 전립선암의 발생 위험도와 악성도 지표로 복부 비만도가 유용함을 나타냈고 간단한 신체 계측 지표 활용으로는 BMI보다 허리둘레 측정치가 더 암 발생의 연관성이 높음을 보였다.

This article explores how the narratives of The Avengers franchise represent the modern society in the post-capitalist technoculture. In particular, this article focuses on the narrative of Iron Man movies. The narrative of Iron Man inherits the tradition of SF hero genre in the 1960s, which carried out the role of propaganda during the Cold War. In addition, American Frontierism and anti-Franklin ideology take a central place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It has long been a substantial strategy to build images with fictional characters and narratives and use them to construct national identity. Such a cultural strategy contributes to the way in which the United States establishes its position in the international relations in modern technoculture. This shows the complex logic of modern technoscience. In this way, Iron Man technologies in the movies conceal the exploitative images of the western industrialism and, more importantly, successfully appropriate the image of technocultural future, the imaginary space where different cultures of different origins have been struggling to achieve their own images of future.

종괴성 병변을 보인 여포성 기관지염/세기관지염 1예 보고

Follicular bronchitis/bronchiolitis is pathologically characterized by peribronchiolar lymphoid follicles, which is one of reactive pulmonary lymphoid disorders. It is associated with 1) the result of infections such as mycoplasma, chlamydia etc., 2) immunodeficiency syndromes, 3) connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome and 4) local or systemic hypersensitivity reaction. And it can be also developed without obvious causes and associated diseases(idiopathic). Radiologically it represents as bilateral interstitial patterns of pulmonary infiltrates. In this case, a 49 year-old woman was presented with intermittent cough and sputum. On chest X-ray and CT, $5\times4$ cm sized mass in right upper lobe and paratracheal lymphadenopathies were detected, by which lung malignancy was suspected. Bronchoscopy, trans bronchial lung biopsy and transthoracic needle aspiration showed non-specific findings only. After right upper lobectomy, we could confirm a case of follicular bronchiolitis which presented as an unusual mass-like radiologic finding.
