        Status of and Prospects for Proton Beam Utilization at the KOMAC

        The 1st proton beam utilization experiment using the 100-MeV proton accelerator at the KoreaMulti-purpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC) was successfully conducted on July 22, 2013. Fortyeightproposals for the second half year’s beam times were submitted, and 37 proposals were selected. The beam time was allocated by the PAC (Program Advisory Committee), which was composedof experts recommended by the KOPUA (Korea Proton Accelerator User Association). For protonbeam utilization, the KOMAC constructed two target rooms, TR23 and TR103, for the 20-MeVand 100-MeV proton beam last year, and an operation license was issued by the KINS (KoreaInstitute of Nuclear Safety) in July, before the beam service started. Proton beams can be utilizedin various application fields, such as nano-, bio-, space, semiconductor, and nuclear technologies,medical sciences, nuclear physics, and so on. Especially, the demands for high-dose irradiation withproton beams are increasing for nuclear- and fusion-material tests and radio-isotope production. Inthis paper, we review the achievements during last ten years and report the status of and the futureprospects for beam utilization of the 100-MeV proton accelerator at the KOMAC.

        The Proton Engineering Frontier Project: Beam Utilization and User Program

        The Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP) as a 21st Century Frontier Program of the Korean Government was started in 2002 with three major goals: the first goal was to develop a world-class proton beam facility based on a high-intensity 100-MeV, 20-mA proton linac, the second one was to develop beam-utilization and accelerator-application technologies, and the last one was to support industrialization of matured technologies. Following a brief introduction to the status of the accelerator development and construction works, we will review the achievements of our user program through which we have cultivated and fostered proton beam users and beam utilizationtechnologies in a wide range of R&D fields from the beginning of our project. In addition, we willdiscuss the design philosophy of our user facilities, composed of five 20-MeV beamlines and five100-MeV beamlines, and perspectives for our user program and beam utilization.

        Medical RI Development Plan of KOMAC

        Many kinds of radioisotopes (RIs) produced by the high energy (100 200 MeV) proton accelerators are developed by the foreign R&D institutes and the worldwide demands are being increased continuously. The RI production using high energy proton beam higher than 50 MeV was not considerable because of the limit of the proton beam energy from existing proton accelerator facilities in Korea before 2013. The available maximum proton energy was 50 MeV from MC-50 cyclotron of Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) at that time. After the construction of a 100 MeV high-current and high-energy proton accelerator and a new irradiation facility for the RI production in 2013 and 2016 by the Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC) at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), we can make a plan for the new RI production of Cu-67, Sr-82 and so on. In the medical application fields, the worldwide demand of Sr-82 is being increased rapidly during last several years and the domestic demand of Cu-67 is also expected to be increased in near future. And alpha-emitters, such as Ac-225 and Ra-223, are becoming attractive to the users in the medical science fields in the future. The RI development plan of KOMAC was specified recently reflecting the recent environment changes and requirements from the users. In this paper, the results and present status of RI production and R&D facilities, calculation results related to the RI production yields, and future plans is presented.

        Promotion of Proton Beam Utilization by Using PEFP's 100-MeV Linac

        The PEFP (Proton Engineering Frontier Project) is in its finishing stage before completion in 2012 and 15 months are left until the 1st beam service, which will be started in January 2013. To achieve the second and the third objectives of the PEFP, development of proton beam utilization technologies and industrialization of developed technologies, we have operated a user program over the past 8 years. In this report, we will review the achievements of the user program to cultivate and foster proton beam users and beam utilization technologies in diverse R&D fields such as nano-, bio-, semiconductor, space, radiation, and environment technologies, and in medical and basic sciences, etc. In addition, we will discuss how we can promote beam utilization and improve applicability of PEFP’s 100-MeV linac after completion of its construction. A survey of proposals for proton-beam applications and an organization of an association of users will be conducted during the next year.

        노인대상 명상프로그램 효과성 메타분석

        The purpose of this research was to present the basic data for developing meditation programs by verifying the effect size using meta-analysis of the results from previous studies on meditation program of the elderly. In order to analyze the effect sizes of program types, group of mediating variables and activity factors of elderly meditation programs, this study reviewed 24 precedent research that have been conducted from 2003 through April 2017 in Korea using meta-analysis and summarized the effect sizes are as follows. First, the overall average effect size was .914, which was great. Among the program types, complex meditation was 1.726, which was the greatest. Among the group of mediating variables, the positive psychological variable group had the highest in 1.368 and the gender consists only of women had the highest in .921. Secondly, concerning the activity factors, when the total number of sessions was 12~20 times(1.193), sessions per week was twice(1.254), time went for 110~120 minutes per session(1.581) and the group size was 71~100 persons(1.535) that were shown as higher effect size. Among the types of publications, articles in journals(1.062) had a higher effect size than dissertations(.817). For the organizing elderly meditation program in the future, I suggest that the program type of complex meditation, 12~20 time of total sessions, twice a week, 110~120 minutes of activity hours. At the time we entered the aged society, this study is meaningful in that it provides the basic data for future program development by confirming the effect size according to program types, mediation variables and activity factors for the meditation program performed for the elderly. 본 연구의 목적은 노인대상 명상프로그램에 대한 선행연구들의 결과를 메타분석을 이용하여 효과크기를 검증함으로써 명상프로그램 개발을 위한 기초자료를 제시하는데 있다. 노인대상 명상프로그램의 유형, 중재변인군 및 활동요소들에 대한 효과크기를 분석하기 위하여 2003년부터 2017년 4월까지 보고된 논문 24편을 선별하고 메타분석을 사용하여 효과크기를 요약한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전체평균 효과크기는 .914로써 큰 효과크기가 나타났고, 프로그램 유형 중에는 복합명상이 1.726으로 가장 큰 효과크기를 보였다. 중재변인군 중에는 긍정심리적변인군이 1.368로 가장 높았고, 성별은 여성으로만 구성된 집단이 .921로 크게 나타났다. 둘째, 활동요소 중에서는 총회기수는 12~20회(1.193), 주회기수는 2회(1.254), 회기 당 활동시간은 110~120분(1.581), 집단크기는 71~100명(1.535)이 효과크기가 크게 나타났다. 출판유형은 학술지 논문(1.062)이 학위 논문(0.817)보다 비교적 높게 나타났다. 향후 노인대상 명상프로그램 구성 시 프로그램 유형은 복합명상, 총회기수 12~20회, 주회기수 2회, 활동시간은 110~120분을 제안하고자 한다. 본 연구는 고령사회로 진입한 시점에서 노인을 대상으로 수행된 명상프로그램에 대한 프로그램 유형, 중재변인군 및 활동요소들에 따른 효과성을 확인함으로써 향후 프로그램 개발을 위한 기초자료를 제공하였다는데 의의가 있을 것이다.
