Oxidation of pyrene using a hemoglobin-catalyzed biocatalytic reaction

The efficiency to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was determined using a hemoglobincatalyzed biocatalytic reaction. The present study employed pyrene as a model of PAHs to study its oxidative removal in the presence of H2O2 and hemoglobin in mass ratio of 3:1. The extent of pyrene removal reached up to 91.1% in the presence of H2O2 and hemoglobin. However, the extent of pyrene removal was 21.3% in the presence of H2O2 only. The results indicate that pyrene removal might be due to pyrene oxidation by the biocatalytic reaction. Overall, this study demonstrated that hemoglobin-catalyzed biocatalytic reactions could remediate pyrene effectively.
Endosinus Bone Gain after Osteotome Sinus Floor Elevation Without Bone Grafting

Purpose: This retrospective study evaluated the radiographic and clinical outcomes of osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) without bone grafts, and analyzed the factors influencing endosinus bone remodeling. Materials and Methods: Radiographic and clinical data from 44 implants in 36 patients were collected after a follow-up period of 6 months to 6.5 years (mean, 2.04 years). Mean residual bone height (RBH) was 5.0 ± 1.3 mm. The length of the implant protruding into the sinus and endosinus bone gain (ESBG) on radiographs were measured. Results: All the 44 implants survived until the final follow-up period. Groups were divided according to an RBH of 5 mm at the time of implant placement, with 22 implants per group. Mean ESBG was 2.40 ± 1.48 mm in an RBH <5 mm group and 2.01 ± 0.87 mm in an RBH ≥5 mm group. Endosinus bone gain was significantly higher in the RBH <5 mm group for up to one year after the implant placement; however, there was no significant difference between the two groups at the final follow-up period. Conclusion: Osteotome sinus floor elevation without bone grafting is a predictable procedure for achieving endosinus bone remodeling when RBH is <5 mm.

Objectives : In this study, the Abdominal Diagnostic Method of Kitao Shunpo(北尾春圃) about Movement Qi between kidneys in Sanghauidam(桑韓醫談) and Jeonggisinron(精氣神論) are investigated for the purpose of understanding the definite technique of the method and the position in the context of abdominal diagnosis in Japan. Methods : The materials related to the abdominal diagnosis to Movement Qi between kidneys were selected from Sanghauidam and Jeonggisinron written by Kitao Shunpo, and analyzed to know the characteristics of the method. Results : Kitao Shunpo suggested the theoretical background of the Abdominal Diagnostic Method that Original Qi(元氣) is made from Original Essence(元精) when a person is born, and mentality(神) and body essence(精), qi(氣) and blood(血) are formed from those. Movement Qi between kidneys(腎間動氣), that is to say innate Original Qi can be diagnosed in abdominal region by the method in Japanese Medicine. Kitao Shunpo decided deficiency and excess of Original Qi and prognosis in clinical treatment by the method, and suggested the standard pulse condition of the Movement Qi between kidneys. Conclusions : After the theory about Movement Qi between kidneys appeared in Nanjing(難經), many doctors have not made attention to diagnose that for a long time, until Kitao Shunpo with other Japanese doctors established the theoretical background of the Abdominal Diagnostic Method, and applied the theory to clinical treatment.

Purpose: Enzyme as Celluclast 1.5L, which degrades cell wall materials of wheat germ, was applied to stabilized wheat germ to increase the antioxidant activity. Methods: Total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC) and α-tocopherol contents were measured from the enzyme-treated wheat germ and antioxidant activity was confirmed by the ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging capability. Results: TPC and TFC increased sharply at 6 h after enzyme treatment but did not change significantly from 12 to 24 h. After 30 h, TPC and TFC increased by 4.3 and 3.0 times, respectively, relative to the untreated sample. When the antioxidant activity was compared with ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging capacity, it decreased at the beginning of enzyme treatment, but increased after 30 h of enzyme treatment and 30 h of treatment with Celluclast 1.5L to improve antioxidant activity. Conclusion: From the above results, it is suggested that TPC and TFC should be increased by enzyme treatment of wheat germ, but antioxidant activity should be improved after 30 h-treatment.

Wheat germ, which is rich in nutrients and phytochemicals, is a by-product during the milling process of wheat kernel. In this study, we aimed to increase the amount of bioactive 2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DMBQ) in wheat germ using the cell-wall-degrading enzyme cellulase (Celluclast 1.5L). The amounts of organic acids, free sugars, and 2,6- DMBQ in wheat germ treated with Celluclast 1.5L were evaluated at various reaction times and temperatures. The results of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography of Celluclast 1.5L-treated wheat germ revealed 2,6-DMBQ, four organic acids (tartaric, acetic, lactic, and succinic acids), and three free sugars (sucrose, fructose, and glucose). As reaction time and temperature of the mixture of wheat germ and Celluclast 1.5L increased, the contents of four organic acids, glucose, fructose, and 2,6-DMBQ increased, but that of sucrose decreased. Taken together, these results suggest that Celluclast 1.5Ltreated wheat germ containing increased amounts of 2,6-DMBQ serves as a source of functional ingredients in food industry.
