In this study, the guideline for designing the drawbeads used in the stamping dies for advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets is investigated. In the drawbead drawing test, the drawbead forces for verifying the equivalent drawbead model(EDM) and the sheet strains for finding marginal strains from FLC0 are measured. In the finite element analysis (FEA), the bending allowance, R/t, is obtained. Based on the forming and bending allowances obtained, the design guideline of the drawbead for determining height and width, which depends on the restraining force and the forming allowance, is prepared by using EDM.

A CAD system for analyzing the design of automotive stamping dies is developed. The system provides not only binder-wrap shape but also punch contact status, which are crucial information in predicting the defects of initial shape of the sheet in the die-face design step. The binder-wrap generation system employs 3-dimensional shell elements and B-spline bases for obtaining sheet shape of die cavity when a binder-ring clamps the sheet The punch contact map generation system calculates drawing depths between punch (or die) and the sheet, and draws contact area which is to be distributed uniformly to avoid wrinkles and severe stretching.<br/> In order to show the practical use of developed system in the automotive industries, the design analysis of front fender and trunk lid are demonstrated. The examples reveal that developed CAD system would be a simple tool in evaluating die-face designs.<br/>
