Objectives. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of smoking to stress and related factors, which shouldn`t be overlooked in today`s society where quitting smoking was emphasized to improve the quality of life and health. Methods. The subjects in this study were clinical patients at six selected dental hospitals in and around Seoul. which involved one each from the southern and northern areas of Gyeonggi Province, one from Incheon and three from Seoul. There were more than 20 new patients in the selected dental hospitals on a daily basis, and the patients developed oral diseases due to smoking. This study was conducted for three months from January to March, 2010. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 14.0 program, and a frequency analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient and factor analysis were utilized to serve the purpose. Results. They got a mean of 80.03 out of possible 100 points in stress provoked by smoking. When the correlation among the smoking-related stress, stressors and stress-coping cost was investigated, there was a significant correlation on the whole. Out of eight smoking-related stressors, the closely related variables were categorized and simplified into three. Conclusions. The smoker dental patients were under heavy stress because of smoking, as they got 80.03. It seems to indicate that smoking is followed by distress such as anxiety or stress rather than eustress.
RP-HPLC-PAD를 이용한 갈근(葛根)과 갈근(葛根) 함유 처방의 Puerarin과 Daidzin 분석

Objectives: This study presents a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography- pulsed amperometric detection (RP-HPLC-PAD) method for the determination of puerarin and daidzin in Puerariae Radix extract and Chinese medicinal preparations. Methods: Chromatographic separation was performed using a 10% acetonitrile with a reversed-phase column (Unison UK-C18, 100 mm×2.0 mm I.D.; 3 μm). The analyses were detected by pulsed amperometric detector (PAD) in alkaline conditions by combining with post-column NaOH solution. Geniposide was used as an internal standard. Results: The limit of detection (S/N=3) and the limit of quantification (S/N=10) were 0.025 ng, 0.075 ng for puerarin, and 0.05 ng, 0.15 ng for daidzin, respectively. The intra- and inter-day precisions (RSDs) were less than 6.5% and average recoveries of puerarin were 99.7-101.3% and those of daidzin were 101.0-102.8%. Conclusions: According to above results, we developed a determination method for puerarin and daidzin in Puerariae Radix with high sensitivity and selectivitely.

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to help ensure smooth and efficient internal communication among dentists, dental hygienists and dental laboratories in dental clinics and hospitals in an effort to boost their job satisfaction and the satisfaction of patients with dental services. Methods. The subjects in this study were the dentists and dental hygienists in 380 dental clinics and hospitals that registered with Korean Dental Association and were selected by stratified random sampling from Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province in consideration of the number of dental institutions located in the regions. A survey was conducted from December, 2008, to March, 2009, by male, by fax and in person. The response rate stood at 60.2 percent. The answer sheets from 430 participants who included 201 dentists and 229 dental hygienists were analyzed with a SPSS 12.0 program. Results. As for the level of smooth communication in the dental treatment room and the amount of efforts for that, the dental hygienists took a slightly better view than the dentists (p=0.019). Many of dentists who tried to have smooth communication in the dental treatment room pointed out a lot of conversation as the best effort for that (47.4%), and lots of the dental hygienists stressed the same as well (70.1%). In regard to the relationship of age to the level of smooth communication in dental laboratories and the amount of efforts for that, the dentists (p=0.005) and dental hygienists (p=0.001) who were at the age of 40 and up had the highest opinions. Conclusions. The departments of dentistry and dental hygiene should offer courses on medical communication and internal communication in dental clinics and hospitals to provide education about communication skills, and related teaching methods and teaching aids should be developed to improve the communicative competency of dental personnels.
