Milton’s Paradise Lost sets an example of perfect harmony and fusion between the available sources of the time in dealing with satan’s rebellion. In a psychological sense, satan’s sin must be arrogance. However, the concrete outward expression of it was the envy against the Son of God, the incarnated divinity. The ambition to become equal to the Most High was also naturally included in this evil complex. Because these elements are so perfectly interfused in Paradise Lost that few readers will notice it. Milton’s ingenuity to achieve such a perfect fusion can be ascribed to his artistic decorum in dealing with every kind of materials he had used. It is the artistic victory in which the already existing materials are comparatively selected and refined to fit properly and more effectively to the whole context. While not neglecting to portray satan as an arrogant rebel, Milton provides solidly and persuasively his envious motive without falling into the contradiction of religious doctrine.
