Aspherical Lens Design by Using a Numerical Analysis
권경일,김철호 한국물리학회 2007 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.51 No.I
The surface profiles of four different spherical-aberration-free aspherical lenses are given as conic curves, namely a hyperbola and an ellipse. Historically known as Cartesian ovals, these lens profiles can be obtained from Fermat's principle. Alternatively, we have derived the surface profile from Snell's law. The derivational procedure is physically more appealing and mathematically elegant. The surfaces profiles of two more spherical-aberration-free aspherical lenses, which cannot be represented by conic curves, are given in terms of a semi-analytic formula. Examples of the lens profiles are given.

Exemplary aspherical converter lenses for changing the illumination pattern of a point source have been designed using a numerical analysis. This technology can be used to design an early prototype of a converter lens for effectively changing the illumination pattern of a light-emitting diode.

Eigenmode of magnetooptical planar waveguide
권경일,김철호,황보승 한국물리학회 2004 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.45 No.1
An eigenmode of a magnetooptical planar waveguide is studied for the case of the magnetization direction perpendicular to the waveguide axis. The planar waveguide can be composed of an arbitrary number of isotropic, anisotropic or magnetooptical layers, provided that the local optical axes are parallel to the laboratory coordinate frame dened by the waveguide axis and the normal to the waveguide plane. For this kind of device structure, Maxwell's equations can be solved for one component of the electric eld and one component of the magnetic eld. The resulting coupled set of equations is linear in the propagation constant, and the eigenmode can be easily obtained using canned numerical routines.
