Effect of extracts from Capsosiphon fulvescens, Hizikia fusiforme, and Undaria pinnatifida blades on development of oxidative stress and insulin resistance in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD) were studied. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a normal diet, HFD, and HFD-supplemented with C. fulvescens, H. fusiforme, or U. pinnatifida blades for 8 weeks. Supplementation with C. fulvescens and H. fusiforme extracts significantly (p<0.05) elevated the plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration in HFD-fed rats, compared with controls. The plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substance level was significantly (p<0.05) lower in H. fusiforme and U. pinnatifida blade group rats than in HFD group rats. C. fulvescens, H. fusiforme, and U. pinnatifida blade extracts significantly (p<0.05) attenuated the effects of the HFD on plasma total antioxidant and superoxide dismutase activities, and on development of insulin resistance. Consumption of seaweed extracts increased antioxidant effects and improved insulin resistance in HFD-fed rats.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the addition of Hizikia fusiforme, Capsosiphon fulvescens, and Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll on the antioxidant and inhibitory potentials against key enzymes related to type 2 diabetes of a commercial vegetable extract. The nutritional quality and mineral concentration of a vegetable extract with seaweeds added were also analyzed. The addition levels of seaweed did not influence the proximate composition, whereas the calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and iron concentrations significantly increased at the 5% Hizikia fusiforme and Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll addition levels. The 20% Hizikia fusiforme addition level significantly increased the total phenolic content and reducing power by 47.08% and 16.82%. The hydroxyl radical scavenging ability of the vegetable extract was not strengthened with the addition of seaweeds. The DPPH radical scavenging activity at the 20% Hizikia fusiforme, Capsosiphon fulvescens, and Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll addition levels significantly increased by 27.47%, 22.25%, and 17.27%, respectively. The vegetable extract with seaweeds added showed higher-level α-glucosidase inhibition activities, accompanied by relatively weaker α-amylase inhibition activity. In particular, at the 5% Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll addition level, the α-glucosidase activity was significantly inhibited by 98.26%. Overall, the results showed that the incorporation of seaweeds into a vegetable extract effectively increased the mineral concentration and improved the antioxidant and inhibitory abilities of the extract on key enzymes linked to type 2 diabetes.

To screen the more promising antithrombotic abalone extracts, the in vitro antithrombotic activity of 6abalone (Haliotis Discus Hannai Ino) extracts was examined in this study. Results of in vitro studies indicated that water extract of abalone viscera (WEV) presented significant longer prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplasmatin time (APTT), and thrombin time (TT) than other abalone extracts. In addition, the platelet aggregation process was inhibited by WEV as well. The antithrombotic potential of WEV was further investigated in animal studies which revealed that WEV prolonged tail bleeding time, APTT but not PT and TT and showed no effect on the platelet aggregation and platelet number. The WEV treated rats presented lower cholesterol and triglyceride level than the control group although the difference was not statistically significant. Results of this study indicate the antithrombotic activity of abalone extracts, especially WEV, and may contribute to the further study in this field.

Hizikia fusiforme, Capsosiphon fulvescens,Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll, and Undaria pinnatifidablade extracts were evaluated for in vitro antioxidant andantihyperglycemic activities. Seaweed extracts containedhigh levels of phenolic compounds (12.44 to 39.01 mg ofgallic acid equivalents/g of extract) and exhibited multipleantioxidant activities. Extracts showed weak inhibition ofα-amylase. However, all extracts showed pronouncedinhibition of α-glucosidase with EC50 values from 2.56 to18.81 mg/mL. U. pinnatifida sporophyll and U. pinnatifidablade extracts both contained protocatechuic and syringicacids. p-Coumaric and ferulic acids were detected only inthe H. fusiforme extract. Caffeic acid and epicatechin werethe dominant phenoilc acids found in C. fulvescensextracts. A basis for further research is provided to establishthe capability of seaweed extracts as hypoglycemic agentsor functional food ingredients.
