        Deep-sea Water Supplementation and Swimming Exercise Improves Bone Metabolism in Growing Rats Fed a High-fat Diet

        This study was examined the effects of deepsea water (DSW) supplementation and swimming exercise on bone metabolism in growing male rats. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley male rats, 6 weeks of age, were randomly divided into high-fat diet sedentary (HS, n=8) or exercised group (HE, n=8) and DSW supplemented sedentary (DS,n=8) or exercised group (DE, n=8), given a high fat diet to all groups for 8 weeks. In the results, serum osteocalcin level of the DS was significantly lower than that of the HS (p<0.01). In addition, femoral bone mineral density (BMD), tibial bone mineral content (BMC), and breaking force of the DS were significantly higher than that of the HS (p<0.05). Furthermore, femoral BMD and tibial weight of DE were significantly higher than that of the HE (p<0.05). These results suggest that drinking deep-sea water and exercise has a crucial role for prevent osteoporosis and increase peak bone mass in growing male rats.

        8주간의 해양심층수 섭취와 수영운동이 흰쥐의 지질대사 및 항산화 효소에 미치는 영향

        This study was conducted to investigate the effects of 8 weeks deep-sea water supplementation and swimming exercise on lipid metabolism and antioxidant enzymes of rats. Thirty-two SD male rats, 6 weeks of age, were randomly divided into 4 groups: (HS : high fat diet sedentary group n=8); (HE: high fat diet exercised group n=8); (DS: deep-sea water supplemented sedentary group n=8); (DE : deep-sea water supplemented exercised group n=8), given a high fat diet and free access to tap water (HS and HE) or deep-sea water (DS and DE) for 8 weeks, and housed in groups of two per cage under controlled temperature(23±1℃) and relative humidity(50±5%). The light/dark cycle was automatically controlled(alternation 12-h periods) and lighting was begun at 8:00. The animals in the swim groups swam for 60 min/day-1, 5 days/wk, 2% load/weight for 8weeks in a large plastic tube filled with water(temp. : 35±1℃, depth : 50㎝, radius : 25㎝). In the results, Serum TG level of DS group was lower than HS group, but there was no significantly difference. Furthermore, PPAR-γ and PGC-1α were slightly increased in deep-sea water supplemented groups. The Mn-SOD protein expression of DS group was significantly higher than HS group (p<.01) and the value of DE was slightly higher than HE group. These results suggest that deep-sea water supplementation and exercise has a positive effect on lipid metabolism and antioxidant enzymes in rats by decreasing serum TG levels, and increasing PPAR-γ, PGC-1α, and Mn-SOD protein expression.

        Effects of α-Lipoic Acid Supplementation on Malondialdehyde Contents and Superoxide Dismutase in Rat Skeletal Muscles

        This study investigated the effects of α-lipoic acid (ALA) supplementation on the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein expression in rat skeletal muscles under non-exercising condition. Fourteen Sprague-Dawley male rats at the age of 6 weeks were randomly divided into 2 groups CS,(normal diet group, n=7) and AS (0.5% ALA supplemented diet group, n=7), and keep non-exercising condition for 4weeks. The muscle MDA concentration of the AS group was significantly lower than that of the CS group in the both soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles. The expressions of Cu/Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD proteins in the soleus muscle were significantly higher in the AS group than that in the CS group. From these results, ALA supplementation under non-exercising condition had a role in increasing of antioxidant enzymes in skeletal muscle types of rats.

        STUDY OF LEIDENFROST MECHANISM IN DROPLET IMPACTING ON HYDROPHILIC AND HYDROPHOBIC SURFACES

        Water droplets, 2mm in diameter, were allowed to fall freely onto hydrophobic and hydrophilic heated surfaces, and their impacts were imaged using high-speed cameras to investigate the droplet dynamics and heat transfer. As the heating power increased, the water droplets evaporated faster,eventually hovering over the surface due to the formation of a boiling ¯lm when the Leidenfrost point (LFP) was reached. The heat transfer from the surface into the droplet was evaluated, and LFP transition phenomena were investigated using time-resolved imaging of both side and bottom views. The hydrophilic surface showed a higher heat transfer rate and a higher LFP than the hydrophobic surface did. Furthermore, the droplet dynamics revealed very different shapes depending on the surface wettability; vigorous bubble nucleation and growth was observable for the hydrophilic surface, but not the hydrophobic surface. The rebound behavior of the droplets was analyzed based on the droplet free energy, including kinetic, potential, and surface energy terms.

        호중구증가증을 동반한 발열 환자의 균혈증 검출에 있어 기본 혈액학 검사의 진단적 유용성

        Background: Alterations in blood cell count are well recognized features of bacteremia. The study objective was to determine the hematologic changes predictive of bacteremia. Methods: We retrospectively studied febrile adult patients with neutrophilia and included patients were either bacteriologically proven cases or those who had clinically suspected bacterial infections. Hematologic findings derived from basic hematologic tests were compared between patients with and those without bacteremia. Results: Of the 624 patients, 143 (22.9%) had significant bacteremia. The following items were significantly different between patients with and those without bacteremia by univariate analysis: absolute neutrophil count, neutrophil differential, absolute lymphocyte count, lymphocyte differential,platelet count and band-associated parameters such as absolute band neutrophil count (ABC). Multivariate analysis revealed platelet count,lymphocyte differential and ABC as independent predictors (P <0.0001, each). Platelet count, the most potent predictor of bacteremia, showed area under the curve (AUC) of 0.685. Analysis according to the primary diagnosis indicated that the most potent predictors of bacteremia in patients with respiratory tract, urinary tract and hepatobiliary system infections were platelet count (P =0.002, AUC=0.697), ABC (P =0.002, AUC= 0.681) and neutrophil differential (P =0.0001, AUC=0.822), respectively. Conclusions: Simple variables obtained from basic hematologic tests were associated with bacteremia even in febrile patients with neutrophilia. In particular, very high neutrophil differential was highly predictive of bacteremia in patients with hepatobiliary system infections and its clinical usefulness needs to be elucidated in a prospective study. 배경: 균혈증에서 혈구세포 수의 변화는 잘 알려진 현상이다. 본연구의 목적은 혈액학적 변화의 균혈증 예측 정도를 평가하고자하였다. 방법: 발열과 호중구증가증을 동반한 성인환자를 대상으로 하여후향적으로 분석하였다. 원인균이 확인되었거나 임상적으로 세균감염이 의심되는 환자들만 대상군에 포함시켰다. 기본적인 혈액학적 검사로 얻은 혈액학적 소견을 균혈증군과 비균혈증군 환자들로 나누어 비교하였다. 결과: 624명의 대상 환자 중 143명(22.9%)에서 유의한 균혈증이 검출되었다. 단변량 분석결과 절대호중구수, 호중구 감별계수, 절대림프구수, 림프구 감별계수, 혈소판수 그리고 절대대상백혈구수와같은 대상백혈구 관련 표지자 등이 유의한 차이를 보였다. 다변량분석에서는 혈소판수, 림프구 감별계수 그리고 절대대상호중구수등이 균혈증의 독립적인 예측인자이었고(각각 P<0.0001), 가장 강한 예측력을 보인 혈소판수의 경우 곡선하면적(AUC)이 0.685이었다. 원발질환에 따른 분석에서는 호흡기감염이군, 요로감염군 그리고 간담도계 감염군에서 각각 혈소판 수(P =0.002, AUC=0.697),절대대상호중구수(P =0.002, AUC= 0.681) 그리고 호중구 감별계수(P =0.0001, AUC=0.822)가 가장 강력한 균혈증 예측인자이었다. 결론: 발열과 호중구증가증을 보이는 환자에서도 기본적인 혈액학적 검사를 통한 간단한 혈액학적 표지자들이 균혈증과 연관성을 보였다. 특히 간담도계 감염증 환자군에서 매우 높은 호중구 감별계수는 균혈증에 높은 예측력을 보였으며, 이는 추후 전향적인연구를 통해 임상적 유용성을 확인할 필요가 있다.

        Effect of Gamma-aminobutyric Acid Produced by Lactobacillus sakei B2-16 on Diet and Exercise in High Fat Diet-induced Obese Rats

        Effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)produced by Lactobacillus sakei B2-16 on diet and acuteswimming exercise was investigated in rats with high fatdiet (HFD)-induced obesity. The body weight gain in theGABA+Exercise group was significantly (p<0.05) lowerthan in the HFD group. Combined treatment with GABAand exercise decreased the body weight gain by 25.6%,compared to the HFD group. On the other hand, neitherGABA supplementation nor exercise alone significantly(p>0.05) influenced reduction in body weight gain,compared to the HFD group. The weights of abdominaland epididymal fat tissues and the liver in theGABA+Exercise group were significantly (p<0.05) lowerthan in the HFD group. The activity of citrate synthase wassignificantly (p<0.05) elevated in the soleus muscle byGABA supplementation. GABA contributes to reductionin body weight gain and fat tissue weight by increasingphysical activity during exercise.

        동결건조한 천년초(Optuntia Humifusa) 분말섭취가 20대 남성의 운동 유발성 스트레스반응에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was evaluate the effect of Opuntia Humifusa(OH) supplementation on exercise-induced stress reaction in twenty male for 2 weeks. All the subjects were performed a single bout of exercise by using a cycle ergometer before and after 2 weeks of treatment. Experimental group consumed OH (6mg/day) for 2weeks. Collected blood samples were used for analyzing glucose, triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol(TC), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDLC). In addition, exercise-induced stress markers including creatine phosphokinase(CPK), C-reactive protein(CRP), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), uric acid(UA), IL-1beta, and IL-6. In the results, glucose were significantly decreased in experimental group after 2 weeks of OH supplementation. However, although the CRP level was tend to decreased after 2 hours recovery of experimental group in the post period, exercise-induced stress markers were not showed significantly change after OH supplementation. These results suggested that 2 weeks of OH supplementation showed crucial role in lowering blood glucose level and a possibility of protective role in cardiovascular stress after a single bout of strenuous exercise in twenty male.
