        Antioxidant Activities of Various Solvent Extracts from Ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) Leaves

        Water, methanol and ethanol extracts of ginseng leaves were assayed for total phenolics and flavonoids, ascorbic acid, cupric and ferrous ion chelating activities, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and ABTS radical cation decolourization (TEAC) assay for their antioxidant properties. The ethanol extract of ginseng leaves contained significantly (p<0.05) higher amounts of total phenolics and flavonoids (600.57 and 1701 mg/100 g) than methanol (374.43 and 1512.64 mg/100 g) and water extracts (248.30 and 680.05 mg/100 g). Among solvent extracts of ginseng leaves, the ethanol extract showed the most powerful antioxidant activities. However, the ferrous ion chelating activity of ginseng leaf extracts were lower than the cupric ion chelating ability. These differences in concentrations of key antioxidants among various solvent extracts seemed to be responsible for their differences in antioxidant activities. These results suggest that ethanol extract of ginseng leaves has the most effective antioxidant capacity compared to the methanol and water extracts tested in the present study. Thus, it can be applied for the effective extraction of functional material from ginseng leaves for the usage of pharmaceutical and/or food industries.

        This paper aims to explore how to derive the semantic interpretations of the non-intersective modifier constructions in a compositional manner. For this, this paper mainly proposes slightly different lexical denotations of the adjectives which implement contextual values, following the spirit of Heim and Kratzer (1998), who presented the lexical denotation of 'small' modified with a contextual element. In specific, this paper proposes resetting the semantic values of adjectives to include the contextual value for subsective modifiers, and resetting the semantic values of nouns as well as adjectives for non-subsective and privative modifiers. As for the plain non-subsective modifier constructions, this paper pointes out the problem of applying the same compositional mechanism and instead suggests the modification of the semantic type of adjectives, which may need further research to provide more evidence. By resetting the semantic values, the meaning of non-intersective modifier constructions can be derived in the same mechanism as intersective ones. Also, the meaning of some problematic modifier constructions which could not be dealt with restrictive formal semantic methods can be drawn properly by reflecting various contexts.

        Distribution of free, esterified, and insoluble bound forms of phenolics in tea seeds and their antioxidant activity

        In this study, phenolic compounds in their phenolic extract (PE), free phenolic (FP), esterified phenolic (EFP), and insoluble bound phenolic (ISBP) forms were extracted from tea seeds and quantified using HPLC to obtain information on the phenolics that are present in tea seeds along with their antioxidant activities. The total phenolic content of the ISBP fraction was higher than that of the FP and EFP fractions. The phenolic acids in tea seeds exist either in esterified or glycosided forms. Moreover, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives have been identified as important phenolic acid components in tea seeds. The ISBP fraction was an effective antioxidant based on the results obtained from the in vitro assays performed, which include the DPPH and 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid)-derived nitrogen-centered radical scavenging activities, Fe3+-2,4,6-tripyridyl-s-triazine reducing ability, as well as Cu2+ and Fe2+ ion chelating effects.

        Purification and Characterization of the Red Carotenoprotein from the Skin of Ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi 1. Purification and Characterization of the Caritenopritein

        A carotennnoprotein from the skin of Ascidian(Halocynthia roretzi) was extracted by Triton X-100 and purified by ammonium sulfate fraction, SephadexG-200 charomatography and DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography. The carotenoprotein was redwith broad $\lambda$$_{max}$ between 495, 467 and 318nm. The red carotenoprotein had an approximate molecular weight of 326KDa(gel filtration). SDS-PAGE indicated the presence of two polypeptodes of 84.1KDa and 74.4KDa, with different mobility in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. In the presence of denaturing agents such as organic solvent aand extreme pH, the red complex readily disociates to liberate the yellow carotenoid($\lambda$$_{max}$ 452nm) and a colourless apoprotein. The amino acid composition of carotenoprotein were mainly threonine(15.2%), aspartic acid(12.2%), glutamic acid(11.9%) and serine(9.6%), while proline was not found. The carotenoprotein consisted of lipids as structure units. Its major fatty acids composion were C$_{18:1}$, C$_{16:1}$, and C$_{16:0}$. The monounsaturated fatty acids(41.5%) contained abundant content compared to other fatty aacids(polyunsaturated fatty acids 37.4%, saturated fatty acids 20.6%).

        Carotenoids liberated from the red carotenoprotein from the skin of ascidian(Halocynthia roretzi)were developed on TLC, and two bands were obtained with different Rfvalues. Their chemical reactivities and spectroscopic properties were studied and elucidated as astaxanthin diester and astaxanthin monoester. After saponification of carotenoid ester, GC analysis was performed. The carotenoid ester contained oleic acid, palmitic acid and palmitoleic acids as 50% of total amount, and had higher content unsaturated fatty acid including eicosapentanoic acid than saturated fatty acid.

        민달팽이 및 달팽이의 化學成分을 分析하여 營養學的 價値 및 漢方效果를 究明하기 위한 基礎資料를 얻고자 一般成分, 無機質, 構成아미노酸 및 遊離아미노酸을 分析한 結果는 다음과 같다. 민달팽이 및 달팽이의 蛋白質含量은 各各 11.6%, 14.7%였으며 灰分含量은 2.7% 및 2.1%이었다. 민달팽이의 無機物 중 K이 213.0㎎%로 가장 含量이 많았고, Na, P 및 Ca의 含量은 各各 142.9㎎%, 138.6㎎% 및 129.5㎎% 였다. Cu, Fe, Zn 및 Mn은 微量元素로서 檢出되었지만 Fe含量은 29.63㎎%로 매우 높은 含量이었다. 달팽이의 경우도 K이 288.2㎎%로 가장 그 含量이 많았고, 다음은 P이 173.7㎎%, Ca은 97.2㎎%, Na은 51.4㎎%, Mg은 30.8㎎%이었다. 微量元素 중 Zn 및 Fe含量은 各各 16.58㎎%, 8.64㎎%이었다. 構成아미노酸은 乾物重量으로서 민달팽이의 40.9%였고, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, leucine, arginine, lysine 및 glycine이 全體아미노산의 53.4%로 함량이 많았으며, cystine, methionine 및 hictidine은 그 含量이 적었다. 必須아미노酸 含量은 總아미노산의 33.0%를 차지하였으며, 이와같은 傾向은 달팽이의 경우도 비숫한 傾向이었다. 민달팽이의 遊離아미노酸 중 含量이 많은 것은 arginine, glutamic acid, alanine 및 serine이었고, 이들이 全體 아미노酸의 54.8%이었으며 반면에 methionine, tyrosine은 含量이 적었으며, 全體 遊離아미노酸 含量은 711.3㎎/100g이었다. 달팽이의 遊離아미노酸 중 含量이 많은 것은 alanine, glutamic acid, arginine, lysine이었으며 이들이 全體 아미노산의 53.6%를 차지한 반면 mthionine, tyrosine 및 cystine은 매우 낮은 含量이었으며 全體 遊離아미노酸含量은 1052.2㎎/100g이었다. The proximate compositions, mineral contents and amino acid compositions of Korean slug, Incilaria frusferi, and Korean land snail, Acusta despecta(GRAY), were determined. The contents of protein, lipid and ash in Korean slug were 11.6%, 2.8% and 2.7%, and those from Korean land snail were 14.7%, 2.2% and 2.1%, respectively. Among the minerals in Korean slug, potassium, sodium and calcium were 213.0 mg%, 142.9 mg% and 129.5 mg%, and those from Korean land snail were 288.2 mg%, 51.4 mg% and 97.2mg%, respectively. In the case of trace element in Korean slug, iron, manganese and copper were 29.63 mg%, 11.21 mg% and 1.64 mg%, and those from Korean land snail were 6.84 mg%, 6.85 mg%, and 2.74 mg%, respectively. The protein of Korean slug was composed of glutamic acid and aspartic acid as a major amino acids and considerable amount of leucine, arginine, lysine and glycine. The amount of essential amino acids except tryptophan was 40.5% of total amino acid. The amino acid composition of Korean land snail was similar to those of Korean slug. Among the free amino acid in Korean slug, arginine, glutamic acid, alanine and serine showed high quantity and the sum of these amino acids occupied 54.8% of total free amino acid. While methionine and tyrosine were poor in content. In the Korean land snail, alanine, glutamic acid, arginine and lysine were abundant amino acids, and the sum of these amino acids occupied 53.6% of total free amino acid. The quantities of methionine, tyrosine and cystine were, in contrast, very small.
