H-type portacaval shunts were made on 5 adult mongrel dogs, and their hematologic values, liver function tests, blood nitrogens, blood ammonia, the changes of portal and inferior vena caval pressure, and their histopathological findings were studied: 1. The postoperative mean values of RBC, platelets, and hematocrit were not changed significantly but the WBC counts were elevated for 6 weeks and returned to normal in 12th week. 2. In liver function tests, progressive impairment of hepatic functions were found with increases of serum globulin, total protein, serum cholesterol, G.O.T., G.P.T., T.T.T., alkaline phosphatase, and prothrombin time. But total bilirubin was not changed. 3. After H-type portacaval shunt B.U.N. and N.P.N. were decreased progressively and the blood ammonia changed irregularly. 4. The mean of portal and inferior vena caval pressure were decreased by 50% and 56.25%, respectively. 5. Histopathological findings of brain tissue after operation revealed the most of abnormal astrocytes in the frontal cortex and the least in the mid brain. There were degenerations of hepatic cells and disarray of hepatic cell cords in 4 among 5 cases, but no venous congestion and a slight change in spleen. 6. After H-type portacaval shunt at autopsy the patency of anastomosing site was 16%, and histopathological findings revealed hemorrhage at the anastomosing site, fibrosis, foreign body granuloma in most cases, and the appearance of neointima.
