18세기 조선 지식인의 일본관 : 申維翰의『海游録』을 중심으로

이 글은 신유한의 『海游録』을 텍스트로 하여 18세기 조선 지식인의 일본관을 살펴 본 것이다. 그는 일본을 여행하면서 일본 산천의 아름다움과 경제적 부, 그리고 군사력에 놀라면서 나름대로 일본의 장점이라 생각되는 점들을 관찰했다. 그러면서 한편으로 일본의 제도에 유교 문명적 요소가 결락되어 있음을 발견하고 이러한 나라가 어찌하여 부국강병을 누리는지 알 수 없다고 했다. 유교 문명으로 일본을 교화해야 한다고 생각하고 있던 신유한으로서는 문화적 후진국인 일본이 조선보다 더 부강하다는 사실을 이해할 수 없었던 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 기껏 일본의 장점들을 발견했지만 그것이 일본이 부강하게 된 원인이라고 생각하지 못했던 것이다. 다시 말해 그는 당시로서는 일본을 직접 체험하는 매우 귀중한 기회를 얻었음에도 불구하고, 조선의 문화적 우월주의라는 선입견 때문에 일본의 실상을 제대로 파악하는데 실패했던 것이다. Based on Shin Yu-han's writing Haeyurok, this paper discusses how the Korean shcolars viewed Japan in the 18th century. Traveling across the country, he tried to find Japan's strengths and merits. He was surprised at her beauty of landscape, wealthiness and strong military power. On the other hand, he also found lack of Confuscian culture in the Japanese society. He couldn't really understand how such a country could enjoy and keep such a wealthy and powerful status. He strongly believed that Japan was inferior to Korea in terms of culture and that Japan should be enlightened by Confuscian culture. Though he succeeded to find Japan's strengths, he failed to relate them to the country's success in wealth and military power. In other words, in spite of his golden opportunities to experience Japan, his prejudiced sense of cultural superiority hindered him from looking at the real picture of Japan.
