Kim Dong-lee left his footprints on the history of Korean current literature. He was also interested in writing historical novels and left many works. Among those novels, there are a large number of works with a setting of Silla. He published Kim Dong-lee’s Historical novels<Silla> which puts his sixteen short stories together as a form of series. So far, the study of this publication has not been accomplished yet. It has been ignored from the beginning of the study of his works. Even if it had been studied, the study just mentioned its side issues or was far from its essence. However, Kim Dong-lee’s historical novels are quite important among his works. Especially, his Silla serial novels should be studied properly because they mean the settlement of his literary interest. Kim Dong-lee made an effort to seek the spirit of Silla by showing his imagination and not distorting the history of Silla in his novels. As a result, he reached the conclusion that the essence of the spirit of Silla lies in loyalty and filial piety, egalitarianism, spirit of art, and piety. He considered these as the virtues we should take over and develop continuously.

Yang Keon Shik(1889-1944). under the pen name of Paekhwa, has not been so much studied about so far. The seems to be due to the fact that the he devoted himself a lot to the translation work of Chinese literature and published his novels mainly in a specific bulletin for Buddhism. He shaped Buddhism by means of such novels as [石獅子像] [迷의 夢] [悟!], etc., and made a deliberate attempt to write novels based 'Zen' in [閑日月] [我의 宗敎],etc. The lack of his ability as a writer, however, caused his intention not to be able to get more sublimate form the artistic point of view. Moreover, not only he permit to make blind points in the formation of literary works, but he himself had no profound and clear consciousness of times and nationalism as well. But he did thematize Buddhism, which had been employed in the New Novel only from the fragmentary and negative viewpoint at that time, from the full-scale and affirmative standpoint, so that his Buddhism-searching mood helped extend the thematic domain of the New-Novel. The mood is, no doubt, significant enough to be considered as a distinctive feature of the New Novel. Moreover, he may deserve to favorable receive much recognition in light of the following facts : he mad a deliberate attempt to write novels in Hangul, he proposed the reasonable theory of literature and he had fair critical judgement. Accordingly, he can be regarded as a writer who set the first stage for the formation of the modern short novel at the age of civilization, and so has left great significance in the history of Korean literature.
