중국 고대종교사, 문학사 그리고 잡기사중에서 “幻術”은 하나의 중요한 개념이다. 그러나 학술계에서는 지금까지 정론이 없다. 중국 고대 환술에 대한 각 역사시대의 역사형태의 변화, 그리고 그 기간 동안의 幻術과 方術의 상호 관계에 대한 고찰은 중국환술에 대한 개념 정의에 전제가 된다. 인류의 상상에 기원한 환술은 인류의 허구적 욕망을 실현하는 방식중의 하나이다. 환술의 개념은 방술보다 늦게 출현하였는데, 역사발전 과정 중, 두 가지 계열의 함축적 의미를 형성하였다. 즉 秦漢 시기의 환술은 외부에서 전해진 雜技幻術을 말하는 것이고 잡기환술은 이후부터 환술의 중요한 부분이 되었으며 중국 근대에서는 “魔術”로 전환 되었다. 진한 시기에는 방술의 실현 수단의 하나로서 다시 환술로 회귀하여 方士幻術을 형성 하였으며, 魏晉 시기에는 志怪類의 筆記小說 방사환술의 주체와 객체를 제공하여 환술의 문학화를 촉진 시켜나갔다. 방사환술의 문학화 과정은 그것이 사회 각 계층의 욕구를 대체하고 발산하는 객체로 형성되었으며 환술문학은 명대에 와서 최고조에 이르렀는데 또한 방술에 종교외적인 객체를 제공하였다.
