        개 비유선 및 비피부 유래 종양의 발생현황분석 (2003-2006)

        During a designated period (Jan. 2003 ~ Jun. 2006), a total of 2,051 biopsy and necropsy cases submittedto Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University and local practitioners were diagnosed as canineVeterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine,Seoul National University. Four hundred and twenty of 2,051 tumor specimens excluding mamary (883, 43.1%) andcutaneous (748, 36.5%) tumors were included in this retrospective study. They were composed of genital tumors (189,45.0%) followed by alimentary (113, 26.9%), hematopoietic (52, 12.4%), urinary (20, 4.8%), bone & joint (15, 3.6%),ocular & otic (9, 2.1%), respiratory (6, 1.4%), endocrine (6, 1.4%), and miscellaneous (10, 2.4%). Particular top tentumor most frequently diagnosed were seminoma (48, 11.4%) followed by fibrous epulis (38, 9.0%), lymphoma (38,9.0%), leiomyoma (33, 7.9%), fibroma (26, 6.2%), ovarian cyst (19, 4.5%), melanoma (15, 3.6%), papilloma (14, 3.3%),cystic endometrial hyperplasia (13, 3.1%), granulosa cell tumor (13, 3.1%) in descending order comprising 257 (6...%).The affected age of the animals with ten frequent tumors ranged from 3 months to 17 years old with a mean of9.2 years old (n = 218). There were no significant sex prevalence except female leiomyoma. The top seven anatomical(61, 14.5%), ovary (48, 11.4%), vagina (40, 9.5%), uterus(36, 8.6%), lymph node (30, 7.1%), and spleen (21, 5.0%).

        Mannosylerythritol lipids ameliorate ultraviolet A-induced aquaporin-3 downregulation by suppressing c-Jun N-terminal kinase phosphorylation in cultured human keratinocytes

        Mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) are glycolipids and have several pharmacological efficacies. MELs also show skin-moisturizing efficacy through a yetunknown underlying mechanism. Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) is a membrane protein that contributes to the water homeostasis of the epidermis, and decreased AQP3 expression following ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation of the skin is associated with reduced skin moisture. No previous study has examined whether the skin-moisturizing effect of MELs might act through the modulation of AQP3 expression. Here, we report for the first time that MELs ameliorate the UVA-induced downregulation of AQP3 in cultured human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT keratinocytes). Our results revealed that UVA irradiation decreases AQP3 expression at the protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) levels, but that MEL treatment significantly ameliorated these effects. Our mitogenactivated protein kinase inhibitor analysis revealed that phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), but not extracellular signal-regulated kinase or p38, mediates UVA-induced AQP3 downregulation, and that MEL treatment significantly suppressed the UVA-induced phosphorylation of JNK. To explore a possible mechanism, we tested whether MELs could regulate the expression of peroxidase proliferatoractivated receptor gamma (PPAR-), which acts as a potent transcription factor for AQP3 expression. Interestingly, UVA irradiation significantly inhibited the mRNA expression of PPAR- in HaCaT keratinocytes, whereas a JNK inhibitor and MELs significantly rescued this effect. Taken together, these findings suggest that MELs ameliorate UVA-induced AQP3 downregulation in HaCaT keratinocytes by suppressing JNK activation to block the decrease of PPAR-. Collectively, our findings suggest that MELs can be used as a potential ingredient that modulates AQP3 expression to improve skin moisturization following UVA irradiation-induced damage.

        Multilobular tumor of the mandible in a Pekingese dog

        Multilobular tumor of bone detected in a 2.5-year-old male Pekingese dog is reported. Grossly, the neoplasm consisted of multiple, variably sized, gritty, grayish-white to yellow nodules separated by thick collagenous septa. Histologically, these nodules contained multiple lobules of irregularly shaped and sized islands of well-differentiated osteoid and cartilage, separated by anastomosing fibrovascular septa. Chondrocytes and osteocytes were observed in the lacunae and in more osseous islands in the lobule, respectively. These lobules were surrounded by mesenchymal spindle cells. Mitotic figures were not evident. The neoplastic pattern was consistent with that of a multilobular bone tumor. Diagnosis was based on gross and light microscopic findings. The cause of this neoplasm was not determined.

        Hepatocellular adenoma in a Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra)

        A 7-year-old female Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) at the Seoul Grand Park, Korea, died after displaying depression, anorexia, weight loss and rough skin for several days. At necropsy, a solitary friable round mass, which was approximately 12 × 9 × 5 cm and mottled dark red and yellow, was found bulging from the right hepatic lobe. Microscopically, the nonencapsulated, poorly circumscribed mass was composed of solid sheets of neoplastic hepatocytes. In addition, numerous small tan foci, ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 cm in diameter, were evenly scattered throughout the pancreatic tissue. These foci were found to be nonencapsulated, well-demarcated hyperplastic nodules of the exocrine pancreatic gland. We observed neither intrahepatic nor extrahepatic metastases. Based on the gross and microscopic changes, we diagnosed the animal as having a hepatocellular adenoma accompanied by exocrine pancreatic nodular hyperplasia.

        제주용암해수의 피부 보습 효과 연구

        제주용암해수는 미네랄과 영양염류가 풍부한 물로 제주만이 보유한 지하수자원이다. 본 연구의 목적은 제주용암해수의 피부 보습효과를 확인하기 위한 것이다. 피부의 건조함을 막고 수분을 유지하기 위해서는 표피층의 장벽기능이 정상적으로 기능하고, 표피층 내 수분의 유지와 이동이 원활히 이루어져야 한다. 제주용암해수를 각질형성세포에 처리한 결과 표피층의 분화과정과 natural moisturizing factor (NMF) 생성과정에 관여하는 유전자인 필라그린과 caspase-14 유전자의 발현양이 증가되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 막관통 단백질로 수분의 이동을 조절하는 aquaporin 3 (AQP3) 유전자 발현양과 단백질 발현양도 제주용암해수 처리에 의해 증가하였다. 인공피부를 이용한 실험에서 제주용암해수를 배지에 처리하고 배양한 결과 hyaluronic acid (HA)의 수용체인 CD44의 발현양이 증가하였다. 본 연구를 통해 제주용암해수는 피부 보습과 관련된 인자들의 발현 양을 증가시켜 피부의 보습기능에 도움을 주는 것으로 사료되었다. Many minerals and nutrient salts are abundant in Jeju lava sea water. The objective of this study was to evaluate the skin hydration effects of Jeju lava sea water. The skin barrier serves as a protective barrier that prevents the loss of moisture. The water holding capacity and water transport of the epidermis have been proposed to be important determinants of skin hydration. Jeju lava sea water increased the mRNA expression of filaggrin and caspase-14 which is related to natural moisturizing factor (NMF) formation. Aquaporins 3 (AQP3) are proteins that facilitate the transport of water across cell membranes. Jeju lava sea water increased the mRNA expression and protein expression of AQP3. We employed a skin equivalent model to assess the efficacy of Jeju lava sea water. In a skin equivalent model, Jeju lava sea water increased the CD44 (hyaluronic acid receptor) which is related to skin hydration. From these results, we found out Jeju lava sea water maybe help to skin hydration.

        고양이에서 비강 림프종의 영상 진단 증례

        Abstract : A spayed female, 5-year-old, weighing 2.7 kg, domestic short hair cat was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University. The clinical signs of this patient were weight loss, sneezing, respiratory distress, nasal discharge, epistaxis, ocular discharge, left exophthalmos, and left facial edema and deformity. The laboratory tests represented mild leukocytosis. On the skull radiographs, soft tissue density filled nasal cavity with loss of turbinate detail was found. Destructive and lytic changes of the left nasal bone with soft tissue swelling were identified. On the thorax radiographs, there were a tracheobronchial lymph node swelling and a soft tissue round mass in the left caudal lung field. On computed tomographic scan images, asymmetrical destruction of turbinate and nasal septum and increased soft tissue opacity in the nasal cavity were identified. Destruction of the lateral maxillary bone, invasion to the left retrobulbar region, and craniodorsal deviation of the left eye were seen. Also, there was lysis of hard palate and cribriform plate. Invasion to the brain was found. The patient was diagnosed as nasal lymphoma by cytology and histopathology

        Retrospective study of canine cutaneous tumors in Korea

        Over the 42 month period from January 2003 to June 2006, a total of 2,952 canine biopsy specimens were received from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University and from veterinary practitioners across the nation. Out of these, 748 (25.34%) cases were diagnosed as canine cutaneous tumors in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, Korea. Thirty-eight different types of cutaneous tumors were identified and categorized into epithelial and melanocytic tumors (56.95%), mesenchymal tumors (38.90%), and hematopoietic tumors (4.14%) located in the skin. Among these, 69.25% were benign and 30.74% were malignant. The top ten most frequently diagnosed cutaneous tumors were epidermal and follicular cysts (12.70%), lipoma (11.36%), mast cell tumors (8.82%), cutaneous histiocytoma (7.49%), basal cell tumors (6.82%), sebaceous gland adenoma (6.68%), sebaceous gland hyperplasia (5.08%), hepatoid gland adenoma (3.61%), apocrine adenocarcinoma (3.07%), and fibroma (2.81%), in order of prevalence. They comprised 68.45% of all cutaneous tumors. These top ten cutaneous tumors were distributed on the trunk (30.08%), head and neck (20.9%), extremities (19.14%), anal and perianal area (8.59%), and tail (3.91%). The age of the dogs with the ten most frequent tumors had a mean age of 8.3 years, with a range of 2 months to 19 years. When all types of tumors were considered together in the entire population, there was no difference in incidence according to sex.
