朴敏予 慶熙大學校 1989 論文集 Vol.18 No.-
Historically 19th century is the lime when the middle-upper class of citizens gains political power as well as economic wealth. It is the period of change from the airstocracy to the democracy. A great change of the men's mode came with the beginning of 1800 and their clothes went dark as well as plain about the middle of 19th century. English dandy led the way and the rest of world followed. The dandy was something new in the history of well dressed men. Their objective was to impress by the propriety and perfection of the cut of dress and not by richness of embroidery. The industrial revolution and the resulting improvement of the quality of the clothes made it easy for the gentlemen to have their clothes made fit perfectly. The dandies of London avoided the exaggeration and practiced to have their clothes look simple and elegant. By doing so they became the central figures of the male fashions in London. In time it propagated to Paris, Europe and even to the United States. George Bryan Brummell was the dandy among dandies, and the leader of the London fashion community. Poet Byron called him the man of the fashion with the elegance and originality. He not only ruled the English fashion world but the Europe as well. Having the future King. George the fourth as a close friend helped him tremendously. Also the historical background of the new generation of political and economical power of the gentlemen made it easy for the success of new male mode by Beau Brurmmell. He detested the exaggeration and extravagance hut chose the moderation, good taste, and propriety with elegance. His only extravagance was the pure and white cravat which was to become the neckties of modern times. Thus the male attire and mode of the English dandies and Beau Brummell have not changed in any meaningful way since their times. Therefore rightfully George Bryan Brummell is called the father of the modern male mode.
