Hanle signals using two coherent laser fields whose polarizations were linear and perpendicular to each other were investigated in a three level lambda system and in a degenerate two-level system. In the three-level lambda system, transmission of a weak probe laser at zero magnetic field was enhanced when a coupling field was applied, which is well known as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In a closed degenerate two-level systems, EIT or lectromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) signals obtained by using only the probe field were not inverted even though a coupling field had been added. However, in an open degenerate two-level system belonging to the Rb D1 line, a transformation from EIT to EIA at zero magnetic field occurred at a relatively high intensity of the coupling beam, which agrees well with theoretical expectations. This transformation did not occur for a forced-closed system made by adding an optical pumping beam to the open system.

This paper examines a case of sustainable agriculture development in Northeast Thailand and aims to understand what kind of systems that cut costs and promote wide recognition are needed in order to change farming methods. In Thailand, a sustainable agriculture policy was adopted after the concept of "sustainable agriculture" in the 8th National Economic and Social Development Plan. The government of Thailand adopted the philosophy of the "sufficiency economy" at the national level after 1997, which was the year of the Asian financial crisis, and promoted sustainable agriculture throughout its 9th and 10th plans. According to the report by the NESDB, integrated agriculture is the most prevalent method of farming among the different kinds of sustainable agriculture used by Thai farmers. Integrated agriculture may contribute to the household food security and the balance of household income and expenditure. However, it is difficult for small farmers to introduce a new method of farming if the cost of change is high. There are difficulties in the transition from one type of farming to another. This paper examines the reasons given by farmers who changed their farming methods, and focuses on community groups as the main cost-cutter. In order to promote a greater understanding of the strategies used by farmers' households and communities, it is important to have a depth of knowledge about sustainable agriculture as it is practiced by various actors in villages.
