냉전시대의 국제정치가 짙게 반영된 초기의 국제커뮤니케이션 연구는, 서구나 유네스코와 같은 국제기관의 도상국에 대한 미디어 개발원 조정책의 지침이 되어, 실제로 도상국에서의 미디어정책에도 큰 영향을 미치게 된다. 그러므로 국제커뮤니케이션 연구는 현실과 관계가 깊은 현실성 짙은 이론이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 근래에 들어와 지금까지의 국제커뮤니케이션 연구에 대한 비판과 함께 새로운 연구의 방향이 모색되고 있는 것도 사실이다. 본고에서는 국제커뮤니케이션 연구의 흐름을 파악해 나가는 것과 동시에, 현재 국제커뮤니케이션 연구가 직면하는 여러가지 문제들을 재조명한다. 더불어 종래의 국제커뮤니케이션 연구의 한계를 넘어서기 위한 하나의 방법론으로, ‘지역연구로서의 미디어연구’의 방법을 제시하며 그 의의에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. The purpose of this article is to lay the methodological foundation and to inquire new approaches for the study of international communications. Starting in the mid-twentieth century, many scholars started to develop the study of international communications by focusing on non-Western and developing countries belonged to East Asia, South-East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and other regions. However, when it comes to analytical methods, the study of international communications faces some methodological difficulties by the end of 1980s. Now, the study of international communications needs methodological innovations. For this reason, this study has three aims. First, through arguing the development of the study of international communications, it reveals the problems that previous studies had. Second, it argues that recent studies started to focus the topic of “regional media spaces.” Third, for a new horizon in the study of international communications, it suggests to take interdisciplinary approach.
