        The Levels of Cortisol and Oxidative Stress and DNA Damage in Child and Adolescent Victims of Sexual Abuse with or without Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

        ObjectiveaaThe aim of this study was to investigate whether cortisol and oxidative stress levels and DNA damage differ between individuals who developed PTSD or not following a sexual trauma. MethodsaaThe study included 61 children aged between 5 and 17 years who sustained sexual abuse (M/F: 18/43). The patients were divided into two groups: patients with PTSD and patients without PTSD based, based on the results of a structured psychiatric interview (K-SADS-PL and CAPS-CA). Cortisol, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), coenzyme Q, 8-Hydroxy-2-Deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were all evaluated by the ELISA method. ResultsaaOur evaluation revealed a diagnosis of PTSD in 51% (n=31) of victims. There was no significant difference between the groups with or without PTSD in terms of cortisol, GPx, SOD, coenzyme Q, and 8-OHdG levels. There was no correlation between CAPS scores and GPx, SOD, coenzyme Q, and 8-OHdG levels between patients with or without PTSD. In patients with PTSD, both cortisol and 8-OHdG levels decreased with increasing time after trauma, and there was no significant correlation with cortisol and 8-OHdG levels in patients without PTSD. ConclusionaaAlthough the present study did not find any difference between the groups in terms of 8-OHdG concentrations, the decreases in both cortisol and 8-OHdG levels with increasing time after trauma is considered to indicate a relationship between cortisol and DNA damage.

        Ruptured Internal Carotid Artery Pseudoaneurysm 10 Years after Cervical Spine Surgery

        An iatrogenic internal carotid artery (ICA) pseudoaneurysm is an extremely rare complication of cervical spine surgery. Here we report an extraordinary case of massive hematemesis due to a ruptured ICA pseudoaneurysm caused by the laminoplasty plate 10 years after cervical spine surgery. Computed tomography angiography revealed a ruptured 4×10-mm left extracranial ICA pseudoaneurysm probably connected to the pharynx. Emergent surgery was performed because of the uncontrolled massive bleeding. After complete resection of the injured segment, an interposition graft with a 6-mm polytetrafluoroethylene graft was placed and the fistula tract to the pharynx was repaired.

        Comparison of lactic acid bacteria diversity during the fermentation of Tarhana produced at home and on a commercial scale

        In this study, lactic acid bacteria diversity during the fermentation of homemade and commercially prepared Tarhana, a traditional fermented cereal food from Anatolia, was determined and compared. The isolates collected from Tarhana dough were differentiated according to their (GTG)5 profiles and then identified using 16S rDNA and pheS gene sequences. The variation of lactic acid bacteria during fermentation was also screened using PCR-DGGE. Commercially prepared Tarhana dough was fermented with higher Lactobacillus spp. diversity than homemade Tarhana dough. Lactobacillus casei, L. alimentarius, L. fabifermentas, and L. paralimentarius were identified differently from the fermentation of commercially prepared Tarhana dough. PCR-DGGE analysis revealed that L. plantarum was the main strain for homemade Tarhana, whereas L. brevis and L. alimentarius were observed in commercially prepared Tarhana dough fermentation. In conclusion, L. plantarum, L. brevis and L. alimentarius can be useful as a potential starter culture for the industrial production of Tarhana.

        Evaluation of Anterior Segment Parameter Changes Using the Sirius after Uneventful Phacoemulsification

        Purpose: To investigate changes in anterior chamber depth (ACD), corneal volume (CV), anterior chamber angle(ACA), anterior chamber volume (ACV), central corneal thickness (CCT), horizontal visible iris diameter (HVID),pupil diameter (PD), and intraocular pressure (IOP) after uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery withintraocular lens implantation. Methods: A total of 132 eyes of 132 patients (87 men and 45 women) that underwent uneventful phacoemulsificationcataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation were prospectively studied. The mean age of thepatients was 63.68 ± 12.51 years. All patients were evaluated preoperatively and at 1 month postoperativelywith the Sirius 3D Rotating Scheimpflug camera topography system. The ACD, CV, ACA, ACV, CCT, HVID,and PD measurements were recorded. IOP was measured using the Goldmann applanation tonometer, whichwas corrected for CCT of the Sirius device using Ehlers’ formula. Results: The preoperative mean ACD, ACV, ACA, CCT, CV, PD, HVID, and IOP were 2.79 ± 0.45 mm, 124.73 ±25.72 mm3, 42.09 ± 7.490, 523.87 ± 41.97 microns, 55.37 ± 4.89 mm3, 3.98 ± 1.23 mm, 11.72 ± 0.67 mm, and14.74 ± 2.59 mmHg, respectively. Three months postoperatively, the mean ACD, ACV, ACA, CCT, CV, PD,HVID, and IOP were 3.45 ± 0.6 mm, 162.52 ± 23.79 mm3, 51.46 ± 5.630, 526.21 ± 44.45 microns, 56.23 ± 5.12mm3, 2.87 ± 0.45 mm, 11.91 ± 0.75 mm, and 12.02 ± 1.83 mmHg, respectively. There was a statistically significantincrease in mean postoperative ACD, ACV, ACA, CV, and HVID compared with the corresponding preoperativevalues (p < 0.05). CCT remained stable after surgery. Postoperative PD and IOP were significantlydecreased compared to corresponding preoperative values (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Preoperative measurements by the Sirius 3D Rotating Scheimpflug camera topography systemmight help surgeons to predict postoperative changes resulting from phacoemulsification and intraocular lensimplantation. This is a noncontact, noninvasive, and comfortable system for patients that is highly reliable andrepeatable for anterior segment measurements.

        Investigation of shape memory characteristics and production of HfZrTiFeMnSi high entropy alloy by mechanical alloying method

        High entropy alloy (HEA) with shape memory effect (SME) has been the subject of great interest for the past few decades. However, with the increased demands for new materials for high thermal applications, the research activities on the multi elemental high entropy shape memory alloys (HESMA) have been increased by many folds recently. The nano crystalline HEA powder with shape memory effect developed in this study, HfZrTiFeMnSi, was produced by mechanical alloying (MA) for the first time. In this method equiatomic ratio of Hf, Zr, Ti, Fe, Mn, and Si were mixed together and milled by MA process for 100 h. The powder formed was of amorphous in nature. Elemental mapping of the powder from SEM-EDS revealed homogeneity of the alloying elements confirming successful fabrication of HfZrTiFeMnSi HEA powder. The DSC studies from ambient to 500 ◦C of the annealed alloy powders showed reversible austenitic to martensitic (A↔M) transformations. The A↔M transformation hysteresis seemed to vary with the milling time and annealing temperature. The enthalpy values, ΔH, for the transformation were calculated from the DSC plots using tangent method for peak area calculation. Regardless of the annealing temperature, the thermal analysis revealed that the ΔH, equilibrium temperature (T0), and crystallization temperature values decreased with the increasing milling time.

        Some Properties of Fresh and Ripened Traditional Akcakatik Cheese

        Akcakatik cheese (yogurt cheese) is produced by drying strained yogurt with or without adding cloves or black cumin. The main objective of this study was to detect the properties of both fresh and ripened Akcakatik cheeses and to compare them. For this purpose the biogenic amine content, volatile flavor compounds, protein degradation level, chemical properties and some microbiological properties of 15 Akcakatik cheese samples were investigated. Titratable acidity, total dry matter, NaCl, total nitrogen, water soluble nitrogen, ripened index, histamine, diacetyl and acetaldehyde levels were found to be higher in ripened cheese samples than in fresh cheese samples. On the other hand, the clove and black cumin ratios were found to be higher in the fresh cheese samples. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electropherograms of cheese samples showed that protein degradation was higher in ripened cheese samples than in fresh samples, as expected. The dominant Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) flora of Akcakatik cheese samples were found to be Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus.

        Effect of Ti Content on Microstructure and Wear Performance of TZM Alloys Produced by Mechanical Alloying Method

        In this study, changes in microstructure, hardness and wear performance of titanium–zirconium–molybdenum (TZM) alloysproduced by mechanical alloying method with the addition of different amounts of titanium (Ti) were investigated. Mechanicallyalloyed powders were sintered at 1300 °C for 4 h under 10–6 mbar vacuum environment. The produced alloys werecharacterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM + EDS), X-ray diffraction, grain size distribution, hardness and densitymeasurements. In the wear tests, three different loads and five different sliding distances were used. Results showed that theproduced TZM alloys were porous, and the pores in the alloys containing 0.40% and 0.45% Ti were generally located onthe grain boundaries. In alloys containing 0.50% Ti, inside the grain the pore sizes increase, while in the alloy containing0.55% Ti, the pore sizes in grain boundary decrease. Grain size distribution results show that as the Ti content increased, theamount of grain size over 6 μm decreased and smaller than 6 μm increased. Hardness and density results show that whilethe hardness of TZM alloys produced increases depending on Ti content, their density decreases. The highest hardness wasobtained in the TZM alloy containing 0.55% Ti, while the lowest density was obtained in the same alloy. Wear test resultsshow that the lowest weight loss was obtained in TZM alloy containing the highest amount of Ti (0.55%) under all loads.

        The Mediating Effect of School Climate in the Relationship Between School Principals’ Learning-Centered Leadership and Teacher Professional Learning in Türkiye

        This study aimed to explore the relationship between school principals’ learning-centered leadership (LCL) and teacher professional learning (TPL) and the mediating effect of school climate (SC) on this relationship. The sample consisted of 500 middle and secondary school teachers working at urban schools in a large province in the Mediterranean region of Türkiye. A causal relation model was employed. The results indicated that school principals’ LCL affected TPL both directly and indirectly. LCL had a statistically significant and positive effect on SC. SC was detected to have a positive and significant effect on TPL. Furthermore, LCL had a positive and significant effect on TPL, and SC had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between LCL and TPL. The study recommends further research on a multilevel analysis of teacher individual variables and organizational variables to explore the linkage between LCL, TPL, and SC.
