        Experimental Characterization and Modelling of Drying of Pear Slices

        The effect of temperature on the drying kinetics of pear slices was investigated. The drying process was carried out at temperatures of 55, 65, and 75oC. Drying time decreased considerably with increased air temperature. Seven mathematical models available in the literature were tested with the drying patterns. The Wang and Singh, and Midilli et al. models were given the best results in describing drying of pear slices. Effective moisture diffusivity increased with increasing air temperature, and varied from 0.85 to 2.18×10−10 m2/s over the temperature range investigated,with activation energy equal to 44.78 kJ/mol.

        Analysis of edge defects in an elastic plate using SH-waves

        The interaction of guided SH-waves with the beveled free end of a semi-infinite plate is analytically and numerically investigated. The material of the plate is assumed to be elastic, homogenous, and isotropic. The plate is modeled as a combination of a semi-infinite region and bounded wedged region separated by a common boundary. The analytical solution of the vertical free end case for the two regions is derived and used in verifying the numerical implementation. In this study, the SH 0 and the SH 1 first two incident modes are individually applied to analyze the corresponding reflected modes from the free end. Specifically, the elastic energy carried by the reflected modes is reported for a wide range of beveled angles and incident frequencies.

        License Plate Recognition System Using Artificial Neural Networks

        A high performance license plate recognition system (LPRS) is proposed in this work. The proposed LPRS is composed of the following three main stages: (i) plate region determination, (ii) character segmentation, and (iii) character recognition. During the plate region determination stage, the image is enhanced by image processing algorithms to increase system performance. The rectangular license plate region is obtained using edge-based image processing methods on the binarized image. With the help of skew correction, the plate region is prepared for the character segmentation stage. Characters are separated from each other using vertical projections on the plate region. Segmented characters are prepared for the character recognition stage by a thinning process. At the character recognition stage, a three-layer feedforward artificial neural network using a backpropagation learning algorithm is constructed and the characters are determined.

        A novel thin film amperometric urea biosensor based on urease-immobilized on poly(N-glycidylpyrrole-co-pyrrole)

        An amperometric biosensor has been developed for the measurement of urea. To construct the proposed biosensor urease enzyme was immobilized onto poly(N-glycidylpyrrole-co-pyrrole) conducting film by direct covalent attachment. The biosensor surface was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The response studies were carried out as a function of urea concentration with amperometric measurements. The biosensor showed a linear current response to the urea concentration ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mM. The urea biosensor exhibited a sensitivity of 4.5 μA/mM with a response time of 4 s. The factors influencing on the performance of the resulting biosensor were also studied in detail.

        Effect of Pretreatment Solution on Drying and Color Characteristics of Seedless Grapes

        Drying and color characteristics of ‘Sultana'seedless grapes were investigated in a cabinet dryer under different air drying temperatures (55, 65, and 75oC) and constant air velocity (2 m/s). Results indicated that the moisture content and drying rate were influenced by the pre-treatment solution and dying air temperature. The increase in drying air temperature resulted in a decrease in drying time. The drying data were fitted to the different mathematical models such as Lewis, Henderson and Pabis,and Parabolic models. The Parabolic model was found as the best model having the highest determination of coefficient (R2) and lowest reduced chi-square (χ2) and root means square error (RMSE) values. Effective moisture diffusivities were calculated based on the diffusion equation for a spherical shape using Fick's second law, and varied from 1.048 to 6.919×10−10 m2/s over the temperature range. The values of activation energy varied from 47.34 to 57.25kJ/mol.         Drying and Rehydration Behaviors of Green Bell Peppers

        In this study, the drying behaviors of green bell peppers were examined in convection dryer. The study was carried out for 3 drying temperatures (55, 65, and 75℃) and for pre-treated samples with ethyl oleate solution against control samples. The pre-treated samples dried faster than the control ones. Drying time decreased with an increase of drying temperature. Rehydration ratio of the pre-treated samples was higher than control samples. Moisture transfer from green bell peppers was described by applying the Fick's diffusion model and the effective moisture diffusivity (Deff) was calculated. The Deff values for pre-treated and control samples varied between 0.705 and 2.618×10−9 m2/sec. Activation energy values for moisture diffusion ranged from 41.67 and 52.99 kJ/mol. Drying data was fitted to 4thin-layer drying models, namely, Lewis, Henderson and Pabis, logarithmic, and Page. The best model, which best represented the green bell peppers drying, was logarithmic.

        Optical Properties of a Two-Dimensional GeTe Layer

        Using the first principles calculations, we explored the optical properties of the two-dimensional -GeTe structure. The 2D monolayer -GeTe had an indirect band gap of 1.79 eV, and that indirect band gap was still observed in the bilayer although the band gap had decreased to 0.61 eV. We found that the optical band gap was much larger than the electrical band gap, which was due to the indirect band gap feature of the 2D -GeTe system. In both systems, we found a very large refractive index in the visible range. Particularly, the bilayer system had a refractive index larger than 2.5 for blue light. Furthermore, the bilayer structure was found to have a larger reflectivity at ultraviolet frequencies. Consequently, we propose that the bilayer -GeTe film can be utilized for potential optical device applications.

        Financial Openness and Growth in Developing Countries: Why Does the Type of External Financing Matter?

        This study examines how external financing (EF) affects growth in developing countries by distinguishing between two forms of external financing: debt and foreign direct investment (FDI). We show that both types favor growth by boosting investment through the credit channel. However, excessive external debt increases vulnerability to financial crises. Contrariwise, FDI plays an amortizing role by reducing a crisis' effects. The empirical evidence confirms these results and demonstrates that, despite the more secure nature of FDI, mixed financing (debt and FDI) remains more profitable for developing countries because of the inverted U-shaped growth effect of the FDI-to-debt ratio. Moreover, exchange rate stability decreases vulnerability to financial crises, whereas higher stability turns into exchange rate rigidity and thus increases crisis occurrence.
