Braking performance and noise in excessive worn brake discs coated with HVOF thermal spray process

Ali Öz,Habib Gürbüz,Ali Kemal Yakut,Selami Sağiroğlu 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.2

In this paper, two excessive worn brake discs of a light commercial vehicle were coated with High velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray process for reuse. The coated discs were compared with uncoated Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) D1 disc in terms of braking performance and noise. The D2 disc was coated with tungsten-carbide-cobalt (88 %WC-12 %Co) powder and NiCr (80/20) binder, and 500 µm thick coating was obtained. The D3 disc was coated with Colmonoy-88 (Ni-W-Cr-B-Si) powder and NiCr (80/20) binder and 600 µm thick coating was obtained. Several test procedures (e.g. bedding, vibration, and structural-strength tests) was applied to three discs using inertia brake dynamometer. Results showed that coated D2 disc with tungsten carbide cobalt provided lower brake noise and higher brake performance compared with OEM disc. Considering the coefficient of friction and temperature, coated D3 disc has approximately equal braking performance with OEM D1 disc despite the high braking noise value.

Recruitment of monocytes primed to express heme oxygenase-1 ameliorates pathological lung inflammation in cystic fibrosis

        Di Pietro Caterina,Öz Hasan H.,Zhang Ping-xia,Cheng Ee-chun,Martis Valentino,Bonfield Tracey L.,Kelley Thomas J.,Jubin Ronald,Abuchowski Abraham,Krause Diane S.,Egan Marie E.,Murray Thomas S.,Bruscia 생화학분자생물학회 2022 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.54 No.-

Overwhelming neutrophilic inflammation is a leading cause of lung damage in many pulmonary diseases, including cystic fibrosis (CF). The heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)/carbon monoxide (CO) pathway mediates the resolution of inflammation and is defective in CF-affected macrophages (MΦs). Here, we provide evidence that systemic administration of PP-007, a CO releasing/O2 transfer agent, induces the expression of HO-1 in a myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/ protein kinase B (AKT)-dependent manner. It also rescues the reduced HO-1 levels in CF-affected cells induced in response to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) or Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). Treatment of CF and muco-obstructive lung disease mouse models with a single clinically relevant dose of PP-007 leads to effective resolution of lung neutrophilia and to decreased levels of proinflammatory cytokines in response to LPS. Using HO-1 conditional knockout mice, we show that the beneficial effect of PP-007 is due to the priming of circulating monocytes trafficking to the lungs in response to infection to express high levels of HO-1. Finally, we show that PP-007 does not compromise the clearance of PA in the setting of chronic airway infection. Overall, we reveal the mechanism of action of PP-007 responsible for the immunomodulatory function observed in clinical trials for a wide range of diseases and demonstrate the potential use of PP-007 in controlling neutrophilic pulmonary inflammation by promoting the expression of HO-1 in monocytes/macrophages.

Investigation of the effect of weak-story on earthquake behavior and rough construction costs of RC buildings

Şenol Gürsoy,Ramazan Öz,Selçuk Baş 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2015 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.16 No.1

A significant portion of residential areas of Turkey is located in active earthquake zones. In Turkey occurred major earthquakes in last twenty years, such as Erzincan (1992), Kocaeli and Düzce (1999), Bingöl (2003), Van (2011). These earthquakes have demonstrated that reinforced concrete (RC) buildings having horizontal and vertical irregularities are significantly damaged, which in turn most of them are collapsed. Architectural design and arrangement of load-bearing system have important effect on RC building since architectural design criteria in design process provide opportunity to make this type of buildings safer and economical under earthquake loads. This study aims to investigate comparatively the effects of weak story irregularity on earthquake behavior and rough construction costs of RC buildings by considering different soil-conditions given in the Turkish Earthquake Code. With this aim, Sta4-CAD program based on matrix displacement method is utilized. Considering that different story height and compressive strength of concrete, and infill walls or their locations are the variables, a set of structural models are developed to determine the effect of them on earthquake behavior and rough construction costs of RC buildings. In conclusion, some recommendations and results related to making RC buildings safer and more economical are presented by comparing results obtained from structural analyses.

Antifungal Activity of the Honeybee Products Against Candida spp. and Trichosporon spp.

        Ayşe Nedret Koç,Sibel Silici,Filiz Kasap,Hatice Tuna Hörmet-Öz,Hikmet Mavus-Buldu,Barış Derya Ercal 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.1

Honeybee products (honey, royal jelly, pollen, and propolis) were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the growth of 40 yeast strains of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, and Trichosporon spp. The broth microdilution method was used to assess the antifungal activity of honeybee products against yeasts. Fluconazole was selected as the antifungal control agent. Using the broth microdilution method, minimal inhibitory concentration ranges with regard to all isolates were 5–80% (vol/vol), 0.06–1μg/mL, 0.002–0.25μg/mL, 0.006–0.1μg/mL, and 0.02–96μg/mL for honey, royal jelly, pollen, propolis, and fluconazole, respectively. The antifungal activities of each product decreased in the following order: propolis >pollen>royal jelly>>honey. This study demonstrated that honeybee products, particularly propolis and pollen, can help to control some fluconazole-resistant fungal strains.
