Net Interest Margin and Return on Assets: A Case Study in Indonesia

Elen PUSPITASARI,Bambang SUDIYATNO,Witjaksono Eko HARTOTO,Listyorini Wahyu WIDATI 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.4

The study aims to examine and analyze the factors that affect the return on assets (ROA) by placing net interest margin (NIM) as a moderating variable in influencing ROA. This research was conducted on 27 banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the period 2015 to 2018 with a total sample data of 91. The data used is a combination of time series data and cross-section data. The sampling technique used was the purposive sampling method. The data analysis technique used was path analysis with multiple regression analysis technique. The results of the analysis showed that the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) and loan to deposit ratio (LDR) have a positive but insignificant effect on ROA. NIM as a moderating variable does not influence the impact of CAR on ROA. However, NIM as a moderating variable is able to influence the impact of LDR on ROA. From the results of this study, it is evident that the LDR will increase the ROA at banks that generate high NIM.

Characterization of the Phenol Monooxygenase Gene from Chromobacterium violaceum: Potential Use for Phenol Biodegradation

Elen Aquino Perpetuo,Regina Célia Pereira Marques,Maria Anita Mendes,Wanessa Cristina de Lima,Carlos Frederico Martins Menck,Claudio Augusto Oller do Nascimento 한국생물공학회 2009 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.14 No.6

In this work, the biodegradation mechanism of phenol and sub products (such as catechol and hydroquinone) in Chromobacterium coli was investigated by cloning and molecular characterization of a phenol monooxygenase gene in Escherichia coli. This gene (Cvmp) is very similar (74 and 59% of similarity and identity, respectively) to the ortholog from Ralstomia eutropha, bacteria capable of utilizing phenol as the sole carbon source. The phenol biodegradation ability of E.coli recombinant strains was tested by cell-growth in a minimal medium containing phenol as the sole source of carbon and release of intermediary metabolites (catechol and hydroquinone). Interestingly, during the growth of these strains on phenol, catechol, and hydroquinone accumulated transiently in the medium. These metabolites were further analyzed by HPLC. These results indicated that phenol can be initially orto or para hydroxylated to produce cathecol or hydroquinone, respectively, followed by meta-cleavage of aromatic rings. To verify this information, the metabolites obtained from HPLC were submitted to LC/MS to confirm their chemical structure, thereby indicating that the recombinant strains utilize two different routes simultaneously, leading to different ring-fission substrates for the metabolism of phenol In this work, the biodegradation mechanism of phenol and sub products (such as catechol and hydroquinone) in Chromobacterium coli was investigated by cloning and molecular characterization of a phenol monooxygenase gene in Escherichia coli. Comparison of limited- and large-volume cone-beam computed tomography using a small voxel size for detecting isthmuses in mandibular molars

de Souza Tolentino, Elen,Andres Amoroso-Silva, Pablo,Alcalde, Murilo Priori,Yamashita, Fernanda Chiguti,Iwaki, Lilian Cristina Vessoni,Rubira-Bullen, Izabel Regina Fischer,Duarte, Marco Antonio Hungar Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2021 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.51 No.1

Purpose: This study was performed to compare the ability of limited- and large-volume cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to display isthmuses in the apical root canals of mandibular molars. Materials and Methods: Forty human mandibular first molars with isthmuses in the apical 3 mm of mesial roots were scanned by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and their thickness, area, and length were recorded. The samples were examined using 2 CBCT systems, using the smallest voxels and field of view available for each device. The Mann-Whitney, Friedman, and Dunn multiple comparison tests were performed (α=0.05). Results: The 3D Accuitomo 170 and i-Cat devices detected 77.5% and 75.0% of isthmuses, respectively (P>0.05). For length measurements, there were significant differences between micro-CT and both 3D Accuitomo 170 and i-Cat(P<0.05). Conclusion: Both CBCT systems performed similarly and did not detect isthmuses in the apical third in some cases. CBCT still does not equal the performance of micro-CT in isthmus detection, but it is nonetheless a valuable tool in endodontic practice.

Determinants of Firm Value and Profitability: Evidence from Indonesia

Bambang SUDIYATNO,Elen PUSPITASARI,Titiek SUWARTI,Maulana Muhammad ASYIF 한국유통과학회 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.11

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of profitability as a mediating variable in influencing firm value. This study uses a sample of manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2016 to 2018. The data used is panel data, with data analysis using multiple regression. Based on the Sobel test, profitability plays a role in mediating the effect of firm size on firm value. The effect of firm size on firm value is indirect, however, through profitability. Therefore, the market price of the shares of large-scale companies will increase if the resulting profitability is high. The capital structure and managerial ownership directly influence firm value. The results showed that managerial ownership and firm size had a positive effect on profitability, while capital structure had no effect on profitability. Capital structure and managerial ownership have a negative effect on firm value, while firm size and profitability have a positive effect on firm value. The main finding of this study is that profitability acts as an intervening variable in mediating the relationship between firm size and firm value.

Phytochemical Characteristics of Seeds and Its Effects on the Intestinal Motility and Toxicity of Joannesia princeps

        Adriano Cressoni Araujo,Elen Landgraf Guiguer,Sandra Maria Barbalho,Patricia C. S. Bueno,Juliana Agostinho Lopes,Bruna Ferreira da Silva,Letı´cia Cabrini Girotto,Marina Guirro de Paula,Paulo Vitor Zeb 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.1

Joannesia princeps is a plant commonly used in folk medicine as laxative for menstrual discomfort and as antihelminthic and antimicrobial to reduce edema and improve tissue healing. The seeds are used in many regions of Brazil as laxative; however, studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of using seeds of this plant on intestinal motility of Wistar rats, evaluate the effects and acute toxicity of its management, as well as determine its phytochemical profile. The evaluation of the effect on the intestinal motility was performed according to the model described by Michelin and Salgado (2004) with modifications. For the evaluation of acute toxicity, we used the model described by Craveiro et al. (2008) and Goloni et al. (2005), and for the analysis of the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, steroids, and other components, we used the method described by Carvalho et al. (2006). The results showed that J. princeps exhibits laxative effects similar to those of Senna species such as Cassia angustifolia and the phytochemical analysis of ethanol and aqueous extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes, and/or steroids compounds. Acute toxicity showed in the first 12 h: piloerection, contortion, decreased respiratory rate, diarrhea, and weight loss. After this period, these changes were no longer observed. It was concluded that the seeds of this plant have potential laxative activity, confirming the popular use and that the dose of 5 g/kg can be considered safe for consumption.

Pereskia aculeata Miller Flour: Metabolic Effects and Composition

Sandra Maria Barbalho,Elen Landgraf Guiguer,Paulo Sergio Marinelli,Patrı´cia Cincotto do Santos Bueno,Leticia Maria Pescinini-Salzedas,Mirele Cristine Batista dos Santos,Marie Oshiiwa,Claudemir Gregor 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.9

Pereskia aculeata Miller is known in Brazil as ora-pro-nobis (OPN) and has been used commonly in the folklore medicine. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the composition and the effects of OPN flour on the metabolic profile and intestinal motility of Wistar rats. Animals were divided randomly into five groups (n = 10): G1 (control group) and G2 (treated with OPN flour). For the intestinal motility: G3 (control group), G4 (treated with senne), and G5 (treated with OPN flour). After 40 days, G1 and G2 were euthanized and metabolic profiles were analyzed (glycemia, cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein [HDL-c], C reactive protein, AST, ALT, Lee Index, weight, and visceral fat). The flour of OPN was effective in reducing percentage of weight gain, visceral fat, levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, very low density lipoprotein, and increased HDL-c. Significance was also found in the distance covered by the activated charcoal from the pylorus to the beginning of the cecum, which was higher in animals treated with OPN. Our results indicate that OPN flour may bring health benefits, as the improvement of the intestinal motility, and it is associated with reduction of visceral fat and lipid profile, as well as the increase of HDL-c levels. With these results, we may suggest that the incorporation of this flour in different industrial products may be a convenient and effective way for the intake of healthier products.

Making Inferences About Settlements from Satellite Images Using Glowworm Swarm Optimization

Emre Avuçlu,Abdullah Elen,Humar Kahramanli Örnek 대한전기학회 2020 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.15 No.5

Optimization is the process of choosing the best one among existing possibilities under particular circumstances in a problem. There are various algorithms for optimization problems nowadays. Metaheuristic algorithms are the algorithms giving almost optimum solutions at an acceptable duration for the problems of large dimension. Heuristic optimization algorithms with general aim are evaluated in diff erent groups. Swarm intelligence-based optimization algorithms were developed through examining the behaviors and movements of living fl ocks such as birds, fi sh, cats, and bees. With these algorithms, some estimating processes are carried out successfully in all areas. In this study a new approach was presented with a novel idea, by inspiring from the behavior type of Glowworm Swarm Optimization; and an application estimating the total population, square measurement and electricity quantity that was consumed by the chosen areas in a region was developed. The developed application works as a real-time and animated display. When all calculations are fi nished, the animation ends. Estimates also examined England as an example. The diff erence between the estimated value of the actual population of England is calculated as 1.7%. In the estimates for the values of the surface area of England with an error of 1.4%, the estimated values were very close to the actual values. Some other obtained estimation results are presented in the results section
