Choosing Solitude in Turmoil, Herding in the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) Token Market: An International Perspective

Rasim OZCAN(Rasim OZCAN ),Asad ul Islam KHAN(Asad ul Islam KHAN ),Murat TURGUT(Murat TURGUT ),Ayuba NAPARI(Ayuba NAPARI ) 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9

Financial markets have long been known to be prone to behavioral biases. One such behavioural bias that is consequential yet pervasive in financial markets is the herd effect. The objective of this study is to determine whether or not there exist herd behaviour in the new and bourgeoning Decentralized Finance (DeFi) Tokens market. This is accomplished by using daily returns of 22 DeFi tokens from January 29, 2017 to August 19, 2021, and the Cross-sectional Absolute Deviation (CSAD) of market returns to capture herd behavior. The results fail to provide any evidence of herding in the DeFi token market on bullish days, that is days for which the average market returns is positive. For bearish days however, that is days for which the market returns is negative, our empirical findings point to the presence of adverse herding in the DeFi token market. This phenomenon can be explained to some extent by the investor composition of the DeFi market. The DeFi token space is a growth market dominated by experts and/or enthusiasts who are insulated against the temptation and panic of negative market swings by the level of market and technical information they possess on the assets they invest.

Antioxidant Activity, Phenolic Content, and Peroxide Value of Essential Oil and Extracts of Some Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Used as Condiments and Herbal Teas in Turkey

Ozcan, Mehmet Musa,Erel, Ozcan,Herken, Emine Etoz The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.1

The antioxidant activity, total peroxide values, and total phenol contents of several medicinal and aromatic plant essential oil and extracts from Turkey were examined. Total phenolic contents were determined using a spectrophotometric technique and calculated as gallic acid equivalents. Total antioxidant activity of essential oil and extracts varied from 0.6853 to 1.3113 and 0.3189 to $0.6119\;{\mu}mol$ of Trolox equivalents/g, respectively. The total phenolic content of essential oil ranged from 0.0871 to 0.5919 mg of gallic acid/g dry weight. However, the total phenolic contents of extracts were found to be higher compared with those of essential oils. The amount of total peroxide values of oils varied from 7.31 (pickling herb) to 58.23 (bitter fennel flower) ${\mu}mol$ of $H_2O_2/g$. As a result, it is shown that medicinal plant derivatives such as extract and essential oils can be useful as a potential source of total phenol, peroxide, and antioxidant capacity for protection of processed foods.

      • Automated UAV based multi-hazard assessment system for bridges crossing seasonal rivers

Orkan Özcan,Okan Özcan 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.27 No.1

An automated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based multi-hazard performance assessment system was developed to respond to rapid performance evaluation and performance prediction needs for river crossing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges. In the developed system, firstly the seasonally acquired UAV measurements were used to obtain the three-dimensional (3D) digital elevation models (DEMs) of the river bed. In conjunction with the flood simulation, the hydraulic model was verified with the previous flood event which corresponded to Q50 and the scour depths after a probable flood (Q500) were predicted by HEC-RAS software. Afterward, the 3D finite element model (FEM) of the bridge was constituted automatically with the developed code considering the scoured piles. The flood loads were exerted on the modeled bridge with regard to the HEC-RAS flood inundation map and relevant water depth estimations around the bridge piers. For the seismic evaluation, nonlinear time history analyses (THA) were conducted by using several scaled earthquake acceleration records that were acting in both principal axes of the bridge simultaneously as compatible with the region seismicity. The Boğaçay-II Bridge that was located in Antalya, Turkey was selected as the case study. In the analyses, as the scour depth increased, the lateral displacements and the pile internal forces were observed to increase while the pier column internal forces kept approximately constant. Thus, it was monitored that the seismic displacement and load demands migrated from pier columns to piles with increasing scour. Therefore, the applicability of the proposed system was verified using the case study bridge.

Effect of Bentonite, Fly Ash and Silica Fume Cement Injections on Uniaxial Compressive Strength of Granular Bases

Ozcan Tan,Gokhan Gungormus,A. Sahin Zaimoglu 대한토목학회 2014 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.18 No.6

Injection is one of the methods to improve the engineering properties of bases. Various additions as well as cement are used forpreparations of injection blends in order to lower costs and reach better results. For this purpose in the preparation of the injectionblends, Bentonite (B), Fly Ash (FA) and Silica Fume (SF) were used at the ratios of 0-0.5-1-3%, 10-20-30-40% and 0-5-10-20%,respectively. Taguchi method was applied for the experiment and L16 Orthogonal Array (OA) with three factors and four levels werechosen. Granular bases having 0.70 relative density was settled into a cylindrical mold to which injection blends were injected. Effectof B, FA and SF over the uniaxial compressive strength of the samples of 7, 14, 28 days that have been prepared in this manner wasinvestigated. In results of the experiments it was observed that the most effective parameter over the uniaxial compressive strength of7, 14 and 28 days was silica fume.

      • Characterization of Novel O-Glycans Isolated from Tear and Saliva of Ocular Rosacea Patients

        Ozcan, Sureyya,An, Hyun Joo,Vieira, Ana C.,Park, Gun Wook,Kim, Jae Han,Mannis, Mark J.,Lebrilla, Carlito B. American Chemical Society 2013 JOURNAL OF PROTEOME RESEARCH Vol.12 No.3

O-Glycans in saliva and tear isolated from patients suffering from ocular rosacea, a form of inflammatory ocular surface disease, were profiled, and their structures were elucidated using high resolution mass spectrometry. We have previously shown that certain structures, particularly sulfated oligosaccharides, increased in the tear and saliva of rosacea patients. In this study, the structures of these glycans were elucidated using primarily tandem mass spectrometry. There were important similarities in the glycan profiles of tears and saliva with the majority of the structures in common. The structures of the most abundant species common to both tear and saliva, which were also the most abundant species in both, were elucidated. For sulfated species, the positions of the sulfate groups were localized. The majority of the structures were new, with the sulfated glycans comprising mucin core 1- and core 2-type structures. As both saliva and tear are rich in mucins, it is suggested that the O-glycans are mainly components of mucins. The study further illustrates the strong correspondence between the glycans in the tear and saliva of ocular rosacea patients.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Stiffness modeling of RC columns reinforced with plain rebars

Ozcan, Okan Techno-Press 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.50 No.2

Inaccurate predictions of effective stiffness for reinforced concrete (RC) columns having plain (undeformed) longitudinal rebars may lead to unsafe performance assessment and strengthening of existing deficient frames. Currently utilized effective stiffness models cover RC columns reinforced with deformed longitudinal rebars. A database of 47 RC columns (33 columns had continuous rebars and the remaining had spliced reinforcement) that were longitudinally reinforced with plain rebars was compiled from literature. The existing effective stiffness equations were found to overestimate the effective stiffness of columns with plain rebars for all levels of axial loads. A new approach that considers the contributions of flexure, shear and bond slip to column deflections prior to yielding was proposed. The new effective stiffness formulations were simplified without loss of generality for columns with and without lap-spliced plain rebars. In addition, the existing stiffness models for the columns with deformed rebars were improved while taking poor bond characteristics of plain rebars into account.

        Improving Empathy in Nursing Students

Ozcan, Celale Tangul,Oksuz, Emine,Oflaz, Fahriye 한국간호과학회 2018 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.48 No.5

Purpose: This study aimed to examine changes of empathy levels of nursing student in two different curricula structures, one called “traditional” and the other called “integrated” curricula. The study was a longitudinal design to follow a cohort of nursing students to examine the magnitude of changes in empathy in their education years. Methods: The study was conducted in a public school of nursing giving a baccalaureate degree, which had a fundamental change in their curricula. In all, 81 students from the traditional curricula and 66 students from the integrated curricula completed the study, and data from a total of 147 students were analyzed between 2003 and 2008. The Empathic Communication Skills Scale and the Empathic Tendency Scale were given to the students in the beginning of their freshman year and at the end of the fourth year just before graduation. Results: Although both of the curricula were seemed effective at improving empathic skills of students, especially the scores of students who completed the integrated curricula were higher than the scores of the other group attending the traditional curricula (p<.05). However, the empathic tendency scores of students in both curricula decreased at the end of fourth year. Conclusion: Although undergraduate nursing curricula either traditional or integrated improved empathic skills, it seemed that integrated curricula were more effective than traditional curricula in increasing empathic skills. The more hours and more experiential methods contributed to improved empathy. The decrease in empathic tendency requires further attention of educators and nurse managers.

        Özcan-Ekşi Emel Ece,Canbolat Çağrı,Ayhan Selim,Ekşi Murat Şakir 대한척추외과학회 2020 Asian Spine Journal Vol.14 No.5

Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study of literature databases.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the predictive factors for the publication rates of spine studies.Overview of Literature: Spine research has garnered worldwide interest due to the increased number of spinal disorders in aging population. Methods: We evaluated the abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Spine Society of Europe between 2009 and 2012. Additionally, we recorded presentation categories, study designs, research types, random assignments of the subjects, single- or multi-center- based methodologies, and significance of the results. Results: We evaluated 965 abstracts, 53.5% of which were published in peer-reviewed journals. Publication rates were significantly higher for oral presentations (62.9%) and prospective studies (61.3%) as compared to the poster presentations (46.7%) and retrospective studies (44.2%), respectively (p <0.001). Clinical studies contributed to about 86.1% of the published abstracts. However, publication rates were significantly higher for laboratory studies as compared to clinical studies (70.1% vs. 50.8%, p <0.001). Multi-center studies were closer to publication than single-center studies (67.1% vs. 52.2%, p =0.009). Our study demonstrated that multi-center studies (odds ratio, 1.81; p =0.016) and laboratory studies (odds ratio, 2.60; p <0.001) are more likely to be published. Conclusions: Multi-center collaborations dedicated to experimental studies in spine research are highly ranked and more likely to be published in peer-reviewed journals.
