Vol.30 No.-

        James Poling

Vol.43 No.-

This paper aims at critically analyzing James Poling’s pastoral theology which based on his theological works. Poling is a professor of pastoral care and counseling at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. According to Poling “Pastoral care is the ministry of the church that seeks healing and justice for individuals, families, and groups within their historical, social, and cultural context. Ministries of care involve listening and supporting persons as they articulate their suffering and hope. These ministries also include discerning judgments and prophetic action on behalf of those who are vulnerable. We live in a time when awareness of evil-child abuse, sexual violence, racial injustice, nuclear danger, world poverty, ecological destruction-is profound. Through courage, the whole church expresses care for all people, a care that comforts those who are damaged by evil, and a care that confronts the principalities and powers in the name of Jesus Christ.” Based on this theological definition of his own pastoral theology he articulates pastoral care as expression of the justice-love of the gospel in the world. In this paper I tried to introduce and analyze Poling’s theological framework as well as his biological data based on his recent three books, “The Abuse of Power,” which focuses on sexual violence in the family, “Deliver Us From Evil,” which thematizes gender and racial violence as a challenge to Christian theology, and “Render Unto God,” on pastoral care and economics. There is a important lesson to learn Poling’s pastoral theology: pastoral theology must be practical based on justice-love to its core. From his theological insight, I argue, pastoral care in Korean context must be justice practice rather than personal comfort in the church. Thus practical theologians in Korea are assigned the task of mediating between the problematic issues of social violence and practice of justice-love in the Gospel.

      • Korean American Ministry

2001 Yonsei journal of theology Vol.6 No.-

As a church, the Korean American church is at a critical juncture of making an inter-generational transition. On the one hand, a growing number of the first generation church leaders are nearing their retiring age, about to leave behind an admirable legacy of faith and good works. On the other hand, an increasing number of their children, the second generation Korean Americans, are entering their young adulthood, about to assume their responsibilities in their church as full-fledged members if not as leaders. In this context of transition, many questions are being asked about the future direction of the Korean American church, particularly regarding the English-speaking ministry for the second generation congregation. Thus far, many models and approaches of ministry have been proposed and discussed. However, this on-going debate has been taking place mainly at the level of "how to's," concerned mainly with finding new ministry methods and models. One of the urgent tasks facing today's Korean American church, then, is to tackle the task of constructing its own "local" theology as it looks at its future, its own theology which will clarify its own unique missions and goals in this society. In this paper, from Korean first generation immigrant's perspective, I will attempt to outline some of the changes that are occurring in the Korean American "local context" and then to delineate some theological and ethical principles that must be included in the process of constructing such a theology. In carrying out this exercise, I will interact with the readings I have done for the reading course, particularly with Sang Hyun Lee's essay, "Called To Be Pilgrims."

        Psychology of Women's Religious Experience

Vol.32 No.-

This study explores the religious experience of Korean women in terms of psychology of religion. Throughout history, Korean women have been well known for their oppressed situation, called Han-ridden people. Even through they were oppressed in the context of the male dominating, hierarchal Confucian culture, they have managed to maintain their sense of identity as compassionate human beings through their unique religious experiences. In this paper, I have surveyed the uniqueness of Korean women's religious experience through the lens of William James theory of religious experience, Jungian theories, and the object relations theory. In conclusion, I propose that religious experience can help the oppressed psychological condition to let go of angst and bitterness into a new form of identity in terms of transformation.
