      • Reversible dual-ion battery <i>via</i> mesoporous Cu<sub>2</sub>O cathode in SO<sub>2</sub>-in-salt non-flammable electrolyte

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Finding a new battery chemistry is of urgent importance to reply diverse deployment trends of battery-driven devices. Here we propose a strategy to configure dual-ion storage battery based on SO<SUB>2</SUB> solvated chloroaluminate molten salt complex electrolyte employing Cu<SUB>2</SUB>O cathode material. The proposed battery chemistry is proven by two different couples of dual-ion (Li/Cl and Na/Cl) batteries that show about 590 Wh kg<SUP>−1</SUP> based on Cu<SUB>2</SUB>O mass with working voltage of 3.4 V as well as highly stable cycle performance up to 300 cycles.         물리학 선량법을 이용한 갑상선암의 개인별 최대안전용량 I-131 치료법 개발과 유용성 평가

        목적 : 분화갑상선암 환자에 대한 방사성옥소(I-131) 치료는 재발율과 사망률을 감소시키는 효과적인 치료법이지만, 치료용량을 증가시킴으로써 치료율을 향상시킬 수 있는지에 대해서는 아직 논란이 있다. 본 연구에서는 최대허용선량 치료법의 효용성을 검증하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 임상적 병기가 제3, 4병기이고, 6개월 이후에 I-131 전신스캔(이하 IWBS)과 혈중 thyroglobulin (이하 Tg), anti-thyroglobulin antibody (이하 ATA), 초음파검사 (이하 US) 및 F-18 FDG PET 등을 통해 치료여부를 확인할 수 있었던 58명(남:여=9:49, 평균연령 50±11세)의 유두상갑상선암 환자를 대상으로 하였다. 이중 11명은 제4병기, 47명은 제3병기였으며, 43명(남:여=4:39), 평균연령 50±11세)은 7.4 GBq 이하의 고식적인 저용량치료법으로 치료하였고, 9.25 GBq 이상의 고용량 치료를 받은 환자는 15명(남:여=5:10, 평균연령 50±12세)으로 고용량군에서 남자가 더 많았으나 연령의 차이는 없었다. 고용량군 환자 모두에서 추적용량의 방사성옥소(평균 77±3 MBq)를 경구 투여한 후 혈중 방사능소실곡선을 통해 최대허용선량(maximum permissible dose, 이하 MPD)을 계산하였으며, 7명에서는 말초혈액림프구의 중기염색체분석법에 의해 생물학적으로 MPD를 계산하였다. 14명에서는 치료용량의 방사성옥소를 투여한 후 혈중 방사능소실곡선을 통해 MPD를 계사하였다. 완전치유(complete response, 이하 CR)는 IWBS에서 병소가 없어지고, 혈중 Tg치가 1 ng/mL 이하로 감소한 경우로 정의하였으며, 부분치유(partial response, 이하 PR)는 IWBS에서 병소가 없어졌더라도 혈중 Tg, ATA치가 높거나, US 또는 PET 검사에서 병소가 남아있는 경우로 정의하였다. 치료후 IWBS에서 병소가 오히려 증가하거나 변함없는 경우는 없었다. 방사성옥소 치료에 의한 부작용은 입원기간 중 타액선이 현저하게 붓고 통증이 있거나, 구토를 심하게 하는 경우, 그리고 퇴원후 1개월째 백혈구수가 20% 이상 감소한 경우로 정의하였다. 결과 : 양 군간에 연속적인 수치변화를 비교하는 경우는 paired t-test를 이용하였으며, 대상군간 치료효과와 부작용의 비교는 chi-square test를 이용하였다. p값 0.05 미만을 통계적으로 유의한 차이로 인정하였다. 고용량군 환자 모두에서 추적용량과 치료용량의 방사성옥소 투여 후 혈액의 피폭선량은 각각 0.012±0.3 Gy, 1.66±25 Gy였으며, 방사성옥소 투여 후 혈액에 전달되는 피폭선량은 추적용량보다 치료용량에서 더 많았고 (1.21: 166 rad, p<0.001), 방사성옥소 1 mCi당 혈액에 전달되는 피폭선량은 차이가 없었다(0.58±0.1 vs. 0.56±0.1 rad/37 MBq, p=0.34). 추적용량 방사성옥소 투여 후 구한 MPD는 평균 13.3±1.9 GBq (9.7 ~ 16 GBq) 이였고, 치료용량 방사성옥소 투여 후 구한 MPD는 평균 13.8±2.1 GBq (10.4 ~ 16.3 GBq)로 유의한 차이가 없었으며 (p=0.20), 두 수치간에는 유의한 상관 관계가 있었다(r=0.8, p<0.0001). 7명의 환자에서 말초혈액림프구 중기염색체 분석법으로 MPD를 측정하였는데 혈액의 피폭선량은 1.78±0.03 G였으며, 같은 환자에서 혈중 방사능소실곡선으로부터 구한 피폭선량은 1.54±0.03 G로 유의하게 낮았으나 (p=0.01), 두 측정치 간에는 유의한 상관관계(r=0.86, p=0.01)가 있었다. 저용량 치료군 43명 중 22명(51.2%)에서 완전치유를 보였고 21명(48.8%)에서는 부분치유를 보인 반면 고용량 치료군 15명 중 12명(80%)에서 완전치유를 보였고 3명(20%)에서만 부분치유를 보여 고용량 치료군에서 유의하게 높은 완전치유를 얻을 수 있었다(p=0.05). 한편 부작용 발생빈도는 저용량 치료군 43명 중 13(30.2%), 고용량 치료군 15명 중 6명(40%)로 양군간에 유의한 차이가 없었다(p=0.46). 임상적인 병기, 연령 및 성별에 따라서는 치유의 차이가 없었다(p>0.05). 결론 : 혈중소실곡선으로부터 MPD를 결정하고 이를 토대로 환자 개개인별로 적절한 선량을 선택하여 치료하는 방법은 부작용을 최소화하면서도 치료효과를 높일 수 있는 매우 유용한 치료법이며, 고위험군 분화갑상선 암 환자에게 가장 적절한 치료법이라고 사료되었다. Purpose: Radioiodine (1-131) therapy is an effective modality to reduce both recurrence and mortality rates in differentiated thyroid cancer. Whether higher doses shows higher therapeutic responses was still debatable. The purpose of this study was to validate curve-fitting (CF) method measuring maximum permissible dose (MPD) by a biological dosimetry using metaphase analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Materials and Methods: Therapeutic effects of MPD was evaluated in 58 patients (49 females and 9 males, mean age 50±11 years) of papillary thyroid cancer. Among them 43 patients were treated with ≤7.4 GBq, while 15 patients with ≥9.25 GBq. The former was defined as low-dose group, and the latter high-dose group. Therapeutic response was defined as complete response when complete disappearance of lesions on follow-up 1-131 scan and undetectable serum thyroglobulin levels were found. Statistical comparison between groups were done using chi-square test. P value less than 0.05 was regarded as statistically significant. Results: MPD measured by CF method using tracer and therapeutic doses were 13.3±1.9 and 13.8±2.1 GBq, respectively (p=0.20). They showed a significant correlation (r=0.8, p<0.0001). Exposed doses to blood measured by CF and biological methods were 1.54±0.03 and 1.78±0.03 Gy (p=0.01). They also showed a significant correlation (r=0.86, p=0.01). High-does group showed a significantly higher rate of complete response (12/15, 80%) as compared to the low-dose group (22/43, 51.2%) (p=0.05). While occurrence of side effects was not different between two groups (40% vs. 30.2%, p=0.46). Conclusion: Measurement of MPD using CF method is reliable, and the high-dose 1-131 therapy using MPD gains significantly higher therapeutic effects as compared with low-dose therapy.

      • 내변형 폴리머 개질 아스팔트 혼합물의 개발

        본 연구에서는 국내산 LDPE 및 SBS 폴리머를 아스팔트 함량의 3%, 4%, 5%와 카본블랙을 10% 사용하여 AP-3 아스팔트를 개질한 화강암, 편마암, 석회암 혼합물을 제조하고 그 특성의 변화를 고찰하였다. 폴리머는 3가지 골재 혼합물 모두에 전반적으로 인장강도와 강성의 증가를 가져오는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 그중 편마암에서는 그 효과가 비교적 적고 화강암과 석회암에 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 두 폴리머간 개질효과의 차이는 거의 없었으나 LDPE가 약간 높게 나타나 보였다. 카본 블랙의 사용은 폴리머 개질 혼합물의 경우에는 별로 효과적이지 못하였으나, 일반혼합물의 경우는 아스팔트의 강도특성에 영향을 미침임을 알 수 있었다. SBS and LDPE polymers with contents of 3%, 4%, 5% and a carbon black with content of 10% by wt. of asphalt were used in three aggregate mixtures, a gneiss, a granite and a limestone waste aggregates. Indirect tensile strength and stiffness index were evaluated for each mixture. The two polymers were effective on improving those strength characteristics for all three aggregate mixtures. Especially, limestone and granite aggregates were improved more than gneiss. Among two polymers, there were almost no difference in performance even though LDPE showed a little higher values. Carbon black improved the properties of plain asphalt mixtures, although it was not the case for the PMA mixtures.

        Lipolysis Effect of Daucosterol Isolated from Mulberry (Morus alba) Leaves

        뽕나무는 약 40여 속과 1,000여 종이 있는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 항염증, 항진정, 지사작용, 노화억제 및 신경보호작용이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 아시아 지역에서 전통 한약재로 사용되는 뽕 나무 잎의 지방분해 활성에 관여하고 있는 물질을 스크린하기 위하여 뽕잎 분말을 헥산, 에틸 아세테이트 및 메탄올로 순차 추출하였다. 뽕 잎의 EtOAc 추출물로부터 daucosterol이 순수분리 되었으며, 그 구조는 1H, 13C, DEPT, COSY, HSQC 및 HMBC 등의 NMR스펙트럼 분석에 의해 밝혀졌다. Daucosterol은 농도 의존적으로 지질분해 효과를 나타내었는데, 본 연구의 결과로부터 뽕나무 잎으로부터 순수분리한 daucosterol의 지분분해 활성은 다양한 질병을 치료하기 위한 천연물 소재 또는 지표성분으로서 활용이 가능할 것으로 생각된다. 그러나 보다 효율적으로 이용하기 위해서는 daucosterol의 비만에 관한 생리활성 기작에 대한 추가적인 연구가 필요할 것이다. Plants are reservoirs of naturally occurring chemical compounds and of structurally diverse bioactive molecules. The aim of this investigation was to screen for the presence of phytochemicals responsible for the lipolysis activity in mulberry (Morus alba) leaves, which are important in traditional Asian medicinal plants. Powdered mulberry leaves were extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Daucosterol was isolated from the EtOAc extract of mulberry leaves, and its structure was elucidated by NMR spectral analyses. The NMR assignments for the compound were determined using 1H, 13C, DEPT, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC NMR spectral data. Daucosterol showed a concentration-dependent lipolysis activity that may impart medicinal properties that can be exploited by medical practitioners for the treatment of various diseases. However, further studies should be conducted to elucidate additional mechanisms of daucosterol.

        Bortezomib과 Dexamthasone으로 치료한 골수외 형질세포종 4예

        Despite the use of aggressive local and systemic treatment including autologous stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma, extramedullary recurrences are common and the prognosis of these patients is poor. Many novel drugs such as thalidomide, lenalidomide and bortezomib improve the response of treatment of multiple myeloma, but some reports failed to describe thalidomide has effect in extramedullary plasmacytoma. Recent data report on the successful treatment plasmacytomas with bortezomib in patients with advanced multiple myeloma. We treated 4 relapsed or refractory extramedullary plasmacytomas with bortezomib at our institution. We recognized all these extramedullary plasmacytomas decreased and showed more than partial response. This report lends support to the efficacy of bortezomib in the treatment of plasmacytoma and describes the safe use of bortezomib. Responses may, however, be of short duration. Therefore, despite our limited experience, we propose that bortezomib may be considered a therapeutic option for such patients who have risk of radiation therapy

        The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the response of Precast Prestressed Concrete Interior Wide Beam-Column Joint subjected to cyclic lateral loading. To this end, the experimental investigation was performed with six half-scale specimens of interior connection. The design parameters are the beam to column depth ratio, and the number of tendons within column core. One of the specimens, IJH-6, is modeled for the connection at the top floor of a structure. The test results showed that the specimens sufficiently resist up to limiting drift ratio of 0.035 in accordance with the provisional standard by ACI of acceptance criteria for concrete special moment frames.

        Experimental results from the cycle lateral load tests for post-tensioned precast wide beam-column connections were presented. Six exterior beam-column assemblages of half scale were tested in the laboratory. The specimens consist of U-shaped precast wide beams and concrete columns. The continuity at the beam-column joint is achieved with the topping concrete and post-tensioning. The specimens were designed with parameters of the beam-to-column depth ration and the number of tendons within column core. The test results showed that the post-tensioned precast wide beam-column connection satisfied the provisional standard by ACI of acceptance criteria for concrete special moment frames.

      • Fe@C<sub>2</sub>N: A highly-efficient indirect-contact oxygen reduction catalyst

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Converting unstable earth-abundant group VIIIB transition metals into stable catalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performances remains a critical challenge for electrochemical technologies. Iron (Fe)-nitrogen (N)-carbon (C)-based electrocatalysts have recently demonstrated ORR performances comparable to platinum (Pt)-based catalysts. However, as their poor stability remains a critical issue, which needs to be resolved to satisfy commercial requirements. Here, we describe a methodology for preparing a high-performance and stable Fe-based ORR catalyst. The catalyst was obtained by the <I>in-situ</I> sandwiching of a Fe<SUP>3+</SUP> precursor in a nitrogenated holey two-dimensional network (denoted as C<SUB>2</SUB>N). Reduction of the sandwiched Fe<SUP>3+</SUP> results in the formation of Fe oxide (Fe<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>y</SUB>) nanoparticles, which are simultaneously transformed into highly crystalline Fe<SUP>0</SUP> nanoparticle cores, while the C<SUB>2</SUB>N is catalysed into well-defined, encapsulating, nitrogenated graphitic shells (Fe@C<SUB>2</SUB>N nanoparticles) during heat-treatment. The resultant Fe<SUP>0</SUP>@C<SUB>2</SUB>N nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the C<SUB>2</SUB>N substrate, becoming the Fe@C<SUB>2</SUB>N catalyst, which displayed ORR activities superior to commercial Pt/C in both acidic and alkaline media.       • KLF4 suppresses the tumor activity of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells via the regulation of SMAD signaling and SOX2 expression

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a zinc-finger transcription factor that plays a role in terminal differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes. There are conflicting reports regarding the role of KLF4 in tumor development, with both the tumor suppressive and/or oncogenic properties depending on different conditions and cell types. In this study, we investigated the functional importance of KLF4 in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Immunohistochemistry showed that KLF4 expression was relatively low in SCC lesion compared to normal epidermis. To examine the effects of KFL4, we transduced SCC lines (SCC12 and SCC13 cells) with the KLF4-expressing recombinant adenovirus. Overexpression of KLF4 significantly decreased cell proliferation and colony forming activity. In addition, overexpression of KLF4 markedly reduced invasive potential, along with the downregulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related molecules. In a mechanistic study, KLF4 inhibited SOX2, of which expression is critical for tumor initiation and growth of SCC. Further investigations indicated that SOX2 expression is induced by TGF-β/SMAD signaling, and that overexpression of KLF4 inhibited SMAD signaling via upregulation of SMAD7, an important inhibitory SMAD molecule. Based on these data, KLF4 plays a tumor suppressive role in cutaneous SCC cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Overexpression of KLF4 decreased the cell proliferation, colony forming activity, invasion and EMT potential in cutaneous SCC cells. </LI> <LI> Overexpression of KLF4 decreased SOX2 level via inhibition of SMAD2 phosphorylation. </LI> <LI> Overexpression of KLF4 inhibited SMAD signaling via upregualtion of SMAD7, an inhibitory SMAD molecule. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Effects of high hydrostatic pressure treatment on the enhancement of functional components of germinated rough rice (<i>Oryza sativa</i> L.)

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study was performed to evaluate the enhancement of functional components of germinated rough rice. Rough rice was germinated at 37°C for 6days, and subjected to a high hydrostatic pressure treatment (HPT) at 30MPa for 24h (HP24) and 48h (HP48). Germinated rough rice without HPT (HP0), HP24, and HP48 were analysed for their functional components. The highest γ-aminobutyric acid, total arabinoxylan, and tricin 4′-<I>O</I>-(<I>threo</I>-β-guaiacylglyceryl) ether contents were 121.21mg/100g, 10.6%, and 85.82μg/g, respectively, after HP48 for 2days. γ-Oryzanol contents increased from 23.19–36.20mg/100g (at HP0) to 31.80–40.32mg/100g (at HP48). The highest vitamin B (60.99mg/100g) and E (4.07mg/100g) contents were observed after HP24 for 5 and 2days, respectively. These results suggest that a combination of HPT and germination efficiently enhances the functional characteristics of rough rice.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> High pressure treatment (HPT) increased the extractability of functional components. </LI> <LI> HPT accelerated the biosynthesis as an enhancement of the enzymatic reaction rate. </LI> <LI> HPT provided the useful information for utilization of germinated rough rice. </LI> </UL> </P>
