        Study on the Characteristics of Vacuum-Bag-Only Processed Composites by Prepreg/Fiber Interleaved Layup

        In this study, the vacuum-bag-only (VBO) process was used to fabricate composite laminates by employing interleavedunidirectional fully impregnated prepreg and dry fiber. The mechanical test results show that the flexure strength, compressionafter impact (CAI) strength and compression before impact (CBI) strength of the carbon fiber composite laminateproduced by this process are about 84%, 72% and 83% of the autoclave composite laminate, respectively. The CAI strengthwith impact energy of 8.5 J retained about 85.4% and 96.4% of the original strength, respectively, for the componentsfabricated by the interleaved layup VBO and conventional autoclave processes. Ultrasonic scanning was performed for the50 × 50 cm2unidirectional carbon fiber composite to identify the void distribution. The results show that the compositesfabricated by interleaved layup VBO process have good quality and low porosity. In the case of glass fiber composites, thehybrid laminate of this process was used to fabricate composite laminate in which unidirectional glass fiber prepregs andbidirectional dry woven glass fiber fabric are interleaved layup. The ultrasonic test results show that the internal pores ofthis composite laminate are very few, and the quality is good. The feasibility of applying the process to different materialsor woven materials was demonstrated.

        Cooperative Learning in Small EFL Early Reading Groups

        The purpose of this study is to explore the interactive behaviors and intra-group discourse in a cooperative reading group when students were asked to do meaning-based reading tasks with their group mates cooperatively. The subjects were 52 third graders from an elementary school of Taipei, Taiwan. For ten weeks, both video and audio data were collected. Based on the finding of qualitative data analysis, we found four main types of group interactive behavior which we called Ardent, Be-forced, Supervisory, and Wait-on. According to the intra-group discourse, we also found that peer-assisted learning existed in cooperative reading groups and most of the peer discourse provided essential scaffolding, modeling, and direct instruction dialogs that help children with lower reading abilities do meaning-based reading.

      • Thermus amyloliquefaciens sp. nov., isolated from a hot spring sediment sample.

        <P>A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic bacterium, designated strain YIM 77409T, was isolated from the Niujie hot spring in the Eryuan county of Dali, Yunnan province, south-west China. Cells of the strain were rod-shaped and colonies were yellow and circular. The strain grew at pH?6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH?7.0) and 50-70C (optimum, 60-65C). The predominant menaquinone was MK-8 and the DNA G+C content was 66.4?mol%. Major fatty acids (>10?%) were iso-C15?:?0 and iso-C17?:?0.The polar lipids consisted of one aminophospholipid, one phospholipid and two glycolipids. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain YIM 77409T formed a cluster with Thermus scotoductus DSM 8553T, Thermus antranikianii DSM 12462T, Thermus caliditerrae YIM 77925T and Thermus tengchongensis YIM 77924T, with highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to T. scotoductus DSM 8553T (97.57?%). However, DNA-DNA hybridization indicated that strain YIM 77409T should be viewed as a representative of a novel species, as there was only 30.6??1.6?% reassociation with T. scotoductus DSM 8553T. On the basis of the morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, as well as the genotypic data, it is proposed that strain YIM 77409T represents a novel species of the genus Thermus, with the name Thermus amyloliquefaciens sp. nov. The type strain is YIM 77409T (?=?DSM 25898T?=?KCTC 32024T).</P>

      • Abnormal volumetric thermal expansion in the hourglass fermion materials KHgAs and KHgSb

        <P>Using first principles density functional theory calculations combined with quasi-harmonic approximation, we demonstrate that the recently reported nonsymmorphic 'hourglass fermion' materials KHgX (X = As, Sb) belong to a type of negative thermal expansion (NTE) material with an abnormal volumetric thermal expansion. It is revealed that the NTE is caused by the peculiar layered structures of KHgAs and KHgSb, composed of alternately arranged alkali metal and Hg-X atomic layers with residual tensions. Specifically, the coefficients of negative thermal expansion (CNTE) of KHgAs and KHgSb can reach up to -2.7 x 10(-6) K-1 and -4.9 x 10(-6) K-1 along the a axis, respectively, as well as a larger volumetric CNTE of -4.98 x 10(-6) K-1 for KHgSb. The analyses of Gruneisen parameters and vibrational modes show that the NTE of KHgX is driven by the cooperation of membrane and tension effects. It is most likely that the weaker bonds in the Hg-X layer and the smaller mass of alkali metal facilitate the membrane and tension effects, therefore producing a large NTE. Our findings offer insights for understanding the underlying mechanism of NTE behavior in the hourglass fermion materials KHgX.</P>

      • Phosphate oxygen isotope evidence for methylphosphonate sources of methane and dissolved inorganic phosphate

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The ocean is an important source of methane, however, the sources of oceanic methane and mechanisms of its release to the atmosphere have only recently begun to be understood. Recent studies have identified methylphosphonate (MPn) as a previously unknown and likely source of methane in the aerobic ocean (Karl et al., 2008), as well as shown the biosynthesis of methylphosphonic acid to be a widespread trait in marine microbes (Metcalf et al., 2012). The mechanisms and reaction pathways from MPn to free methane, however, have not been well studied. Here we present results of laboratory studies on the photo-degradation of MPn, a likely mechanism of methane release to the atmosphere and phosphate release to the surface oceans. Phosphonoacetic acid was also studied as an additional model compound for comparison. We used the multi-labeled water isotope probing (MLWIP) approach, involving <SUP>18</SUP>O-labeled waters to probe the photolytic mechanism of CP bond cleavage in phosphates through analysis of P released from MPn as PO<SUB>4</SUB>. These studies identified distinct reaction pathways involving phosphates compared with other common organophosphorus compounds (e.g., phosphoesters), as well as suggest the involvement of both ambient water and atmospheric oxygen in CP bond cleavage. There is only a small amount of water oxygen incorporated into product PO<SUB>4</SUB> after cleavage of the CP bond in MPn, suggesting atmospheric O<SUB>2</SUB> or radicals formed from O<SUB>2</SUB> under Ultra Violet Radiation (UVR), as the primary source of O that replaces C in the CP bond of MPn. Model calculations suggest that the δ<SUP>18</SUP>O<SUB>P</SUB> signature of phosphate released via UV-degradation of phosphates is largely (75%) inherited from the original phosphate substrate.       • Inhibition of Transient Receptor Potential Melastain 7 Enhances Apoptosis Induced by TRAIL in PC-3 cells

        Transient receptor potential melastain 7 (TRPM7) is a bifunctional protein with dual structure of both ion channel and protein kinase, participating in a wide variety of diseases including cancer. Recent researches have reported the mechanism of TRPM7 in human cancers. However, the correlation between TRPM7 and prostate cancer (PCa) has not been well studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential the role of TRPM7 in the apoptosis of PC-3 cells, which is the key cell of advanced metastatic PCa. In this study, we demonstrated the influence and potential function of TRPM7 on the PC-3 cells apoptosis induced by TNF-related apoptosis inducing-ligand (TRAIL). The study also found a novel up-regulated expression of TRPM7 in PC-3 cells after treating with TRAIL. Suppression of TRPM7 by TRPM7 non-specific inhibitors ($Gd^{3+}$ or 2-aminoethoxy diphenylborate (2-APB) ) not only markedly eliminated TRPM7 expression level, but also increased the apoptosis of TRAIL-treated PC-3 cells, which may be regulated by the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway accompany with up-regulated expression of cleaved Caspase-3, (TRAIL-receptor 1, death receptors 4) DR4, and (TRAIL-receptor 2, death receptors 5) DR5. Taken together, our findings strongly suggested that TRPM7 was involved in the apoptosis of PC-3 cells induced by TRAIL, indicating that TRPM7 may be applied as a therapeutic target for PCa.

      • The in vivo photothermal treatment of gold nanorod in the mouse ear model

        Gold nanorod's exceptional light to heat transduction is a robust phonomenon that has been extensively verified. The phenomenon is a trait from which many novel applications across disciplines have been proposed. In this investigation, the feasibility of utilizing heat harvested from such photothermal method to combat cancer is presented. Using non-invasive laser methods, an in vivo study is conducted on mouse ear tumors administered with gold nanorods (Au NRs). An emphasis is placed on monitoring the tumor developments after photothermal treatments, over time. The findings reveal significant tumor growth surpression at a threshold laser power of $0.6W/cm^2$ lasting 2 minutes; this energy also brought about dramatic size reduction in treated tumors. Furthermore, the apparent formation of an eschar over the laser treated region indicates extensive hemorrhagic necrosis of the tumor tissue; a phenomenon implicative to the inhibition of angiogenesis.
