Financial Liberalization, Competition, and Bank Loan Quality
( Xiao Fen Chen ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2005 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.20 No.1
The paper studies the relationship between financial liberalization, characterized by removing entry restrictions, and bank loan quality. It shows that if a banking market is liberalized, the opportunity cost of screening loan applicants is driven lower by competition. Thus, a bank facing an entry threat is more likely to invest in screening instead of relying on collateral requirements. Removing entry restrictions may improve loan quality stability and reduce correlation between bank performance and asset price fluctuations.

Growing evidence shows that deregulation of the circadian clock plays an important role in the development of malignant tumors, including gliomas. However, the molecular mechanisms of gene chnages controlling circadian rhythm in glioma cells have not been explored. Using real time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry techniques, we examined the expression of two important clock genes, cry1 and cry2, in 69 gliomas. In this study, out of 69 gliomas, 38 were cry1-positive, and 51 were cry2-positive. The expression levels of cry1 and cry2 in glioma cells were significantly different from the surrounding non-glioma cells (P<0.01). The difference in the expression rate of cry1 and cry 2 in high-grade (grade III and IV) and low-grade (grade 1 and II) gliomas was non-significant (P>0.05) but there was a difference in the intensity of immunoactivity for cry 2 between high-grade gliomas and low-grade gliomas (r=-0.384, P=0.021). In this study, we found that the expression of cry1 and cry2 in glioma cells was much lower than in the surrounding non-glioma cells. Therefore, we suggest that disturbances in cry1 and cry2 expression may result in the disruption of the control of normal circadian rhythm, thus benefiting the survival of glioma cells. Differential expression of circadian clock genes in glioma and non-glioma cells may provide a molecular basis for the chemotherapy of gliomas.

Diabetes was associated with a 26% increased risk of death from any cancer in Asians. The pattern of associations with specific cancers suggests the need for better control (prevention, detection, management) of the growing epidemic of diabetes (as well as obesity), in order to reduce cancer mortality.

In this study, we cloned the ERF-B3 subfamily transcription factor gene BnaERF-B3-hy15 from Brassica napus L. Huyou15. This 600 bp gene encodes a 199 amino acid classic ethylene responsive factor (ERF), which shown no binding or very weak binding GCC box-binding activity by the yeast one-hybrid assay. We used gene shuffling and the yeast one-hybrid system to obtain three mutated sequences that can bind to the GCC box. Sequence analysis indicated that two residues, Gly156 in the AP2 domain and Phe62 at the N-terminal domain were mutated to arginine and serine, respectively. Changes of Gly156 to arginine and Phe62 to serine increased the GCC- binding activity of BnaERF-B3-hy15 and the alter of Gly156 to arginine changed the AP2-domain structure of BnaERF-B3- hy15. Danggui (Angelica sinensis Radix) in East Asia for its unique pleasant flavor is usually cooked before utilizing to enhance its tonic effect. To evaluate the quality and bioactivity changes, heat treatments were carried out at 250oC for 0-45 min. 5-Hydroxymaltol, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural,Z-ligustilide, and ferulic acid in aqueous extract of processed danggui (APD) were determined by HPLC while antihypertensive effects were studied after oral administration of APD (50 and 100 mg/kg) for 3 days in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Compared with aqueous extract of danggui (AD), contents of ferulic acid and Z-ligustilide in APD were significantly decreased but 5-hydroxymaltol and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were increased. APD could lower blood pressures, plasma renin activities, and angiotensin II levels of SHR, but AD failed to do those. APD exhibited hypotensive effects by regulating renin-angiotensin system and may warrant further evaluation as a potential antihypertensive agent.

Even though nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is not common worldwide, it is a major public health burden in endemic areas. Distant metastasis often leads to a poor prognosis for NPC; therefore, new and effective anticancer strategies are needed. Ginkgolic acid (GA) is small-molecule compound existing in Ginkgo biloba that has various biologically relevant activities, including antitumor properties; however, its effects and mechanism of action in NPC are unknown. The effects of GA on NPC and such underlying mechanisms were investigated using 5–8F and CNE2 cells and NP69 human immortalized nasopharyngeal epithelial cells in this study. Moreover, the xenograft models were built to examine GA's effection in vivo. GA treatment decreased the survival and invasive capacity of 5–8F and CNE2 and induced their apoptosis, which varied with dose; this was accompanied by downregulation of B cell lymphoma (Bcl)2, upregulation of Bcl2-associated X protein, and activation of poly-ADP ribose polymerase, and caspase-9/-3. G0/G1 phase arrest was induced by GA in NPCs. It also reduced the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 6 and its regulators cyclin D2 and cyclin D3. GA inhibited the activation of protein kinase B/nuclear factor signaling; this effect was potentiated with GA and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which also enhanced 5-FU-induced apoptosis. In summary, GA may be effective as an adjuvant to conventional chemotherapy drugs in preventing the progression of NPC.

Learning from imbalanced data set is relatively new challenge for breast cancer diagnosis, where the diseases cases are often quite rare relative to normal population. Although traditional algorithms are all accuracyoriented which result biased towards the majority class. The combinations of sampling methods with ensemble classifiers have shown certainly good performance. In this paper, a hybrid of cluster-based undersampling and boosted C5.0 is proposed. The proposed classification model consists of two phases: cluster analysis and classification. In cluster analysis, affinity propagation algorithm is used to define the number of clusters, and then the k-means clustering is utilized to select the border and informative samples. In the classification phase, C5.0 algorithm is used in conjunction with boosting technical, owing to leverage the strength of the individual classifiers. The proposed algorithm is assessed by 14 benchmark imbalanced data sets taken from UCI dataset repository. The extensive experimental results on different imbalanced datasets demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can achieve better classification performance in terms of Matthews’ Correlation Coefficient (MCC) as compared to other existing imbalanced dataset classification algorithms.

Colorectal cancer (CRC), now the third most common cancer across the world, is known to aggregate in families. USP7 is a very important protein with an important role in regulating the p53 pathway, which is critical for genomic stability and tumor suppression. We here genotyped eight SNPs within the USP7 gene and conducted a case-control study in 312 CRC patients and 270 healthy subjects in the Chinese Han population. No significant associations were found for any single SNP and CRC risk. Our data eliminate USP7 as a potential candidate gene towards for CRC in the Han Chinese population.
