      • 경피신경 전기자극이 β-Endorphin 및 Catecholamines치에 미치는 영향

        The development of a method for the detection or highly specific opiate receptors in neural memberances and the discovery of such receptors in animal brains opened the current era of explosively rapid progress in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of action of the opiate narcotics. Furthermore a second advance was the discovery of two endogenuous opioid peptides, Met-and Leu-enkephalin which was recognized as a component of a larger peptide malecule, β-lipotropin. Immediately, scientists became interested in the possible physiologic function of these components in animal and humans, so active research in the rea was begun, and is continuing today. And also the relation-ships of endorphin to other neurotransmitter systems. Recently major efforts have been undertaken to develop assays for β-endorphin and catecholamines in plasma to study possible effcts of pain, stress, diurnal variation and acticity. It was a well known fact that βendorphin and catecholamines were secreted concomitantly by the pituitary gland. However, reserachers have noted an increase or decrease of β-endorphin and catecholamines in plasma after TENS, there may or may not be the correlation between acute and chronic pain. This study has undertaken the correlation between β-endorphin and catecholamines level changes by the TENS in the chronic pain and normal healthy volunter subjects with twelve cases each. We measured and observed β-endorphin levels with RIA KIT and catecholamines levels with High Performance Liquied Chomatography with Electrochemical Detection and also observed the changes of the blood pressure and pulsa rate before, after 30 minutes, and after 60 minutes with TENS. The results were as follows: 1. There were no significant differences on age, heigh and weight in compared with groups. (Table 1) 2. The pain intensity was markedly improved in the experimental gorups. (Table 1) 3. The changes of blood pressure were observed with slight decrease (P>0.05) and pulse rate were significantly decreased (P<0.05) in both groups before and after TENS. (Table 2) 4. Some changes with β-endorphin were observed with a slight increase or decrease in both groups before and after TENS< but there was no statistically significant changes in both gourps. (P>0.05) (Table 3) 5. Some changes in the catecholamines level were observed with a slight increase or decrease in both goups before and after TENS< but there was no constant tendency. (p>0.05) (Table 4). These results show that the relief of pain intensith with TENS were not correlated with β-endorphin and catecholamines level which has no constant tendency.

      • The Impact of FTA on ICT Industries: The Case of the Korea-US FTA

        In this paper, we study the impact of the Korea-US FTA on information and communications technologies (ICT) industries, which have led Korea`s economic growth during the last decade. We first compare the competitive edge of two countries in ICT markets. Then we estimate the export and import demand elasticities. Empirical results show that the expected reduction of the trade surplus after the Korea-US FTA is $30.4 million, which is about 0.06% of the ICT trade surplus in 2005. Therefore, we can conclude that the FTA would not affect the current trade structure too seriously, at least in the short run. We also estimate induced production and value-added effects using input output analysis.

      • An Analysis of Relationships between IT Part Imports and IT Product Exports in Korea

        As imports of parts and materials in the IT industry in Korea have recently increased, a great deal of research has reported the current status of Korean imports and suggested new approaches to enhance the domestic IT industry. However, there have been lack of empirical studies that analyze a direct relationship between IT part imports and IT product exports. Therefore, this study conducts a time series analysis to examine such a relationship. Findings indicate that there is a significant correlation between those imports and exports. A cross correlation analysis demonstrated the two variables are coincident. The error correction model showed that the long run elasticity of IT part imports to IT product exports is 0.42.

      • Economic Evaluation of the IT SoC Industry Infrastructure Program

        This paper evaluates the economic effect of the IT SoC Industrial Foundation Composition Project. The evaluation was done in three steps. The first step was to estimate the contribution effect of the fabless small and medium venture business' sales. The step includes interview with all the CEOs of the firms under the support of the Enterprise Incubation System, The second step was to apply input-output analysis and then estimate the production inducement effect. The last step was to compare the results of estimation with the costs of the project. We have concluded this project had achieved 6.3 times greater economic effect compared to the budget. The reason for the large economic effect is that the project provided various infrastructures to the small and medium venture businesses.

        Molecular Biological Diagnosis of Meloidogyne Species Occurring in Korea

        Root-knot nematode species, such as Meloidogyne hapla, M. incognita, M. arenaria, and M. javanica are the most economically notorious nematode pests, causing serious damage to a variety of crops throughout the world. In this study, DNA sequence analyses were performed on the D3 expansion segment of the 28S gene in the ribosomal DNA in an effort to characterize genetic variations in the three Meloidogyne species obtained from Korea and four species from the United States. Further, PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism), SCAR (Sequence Characterized Amplified Region) PCR and RAPD (Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA) were also utilized to develop methods for the accurate and rapid species identification of the root-knot nematode species. In the sequence analysis of the D3 expansion segment, only a few nucleotide sequence variations were detected among M. incognita, M. arenaria, and M, javanica, but not M. hapla. As a result of our haplotype analysis, haplotype 5 was shown to be common in M. arenaria, M. incognita, M. javanica, but not in the facultatively parthenogenetic species, M. hapla. PCR-RFLP analysis involving the amplification of the mitochondrial COII and large ribosomal RNA (lrRNA) regions yielded one distinct amplicon for M. hapla at 500 bp, thereby enabling us to distinguish M. hapla from M. incognita, M. arenaria, and M. javanica reproduced via obligate mitotic parthenogenesis. SCAR markers were used to successfully identify the four tested root-knot nematode species. Furthermore, newly attempted RAPD primers for some available root-knot nematodes also provided some species-specific amplification patterns that could also be used to distinguish among root-knot nematode species for quarantine purposes.

      • Mitochondrial DNA Sequence Variation of the Rice Leaf Roller, Cnapahalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Structural Analysis of the A+T-rich Region

        The rice leaf roller, Cnaphalocroci smedinalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a leaf-feeding pest of rice world-widely distributed. For better understanding of the pest insect, geographic sequence variation of the species were performed using the mitochondrial A+T-rich region, with the samples collected from seven Korean and six Chinese localities. A total of 94 haplotypes obtained from 187 individuals showed the length variation, ranging from 339 bp to 348 bp. The maximum divergence of 4.57% appears to evidence a substantial sequence variation, indicating the applicability of this molecular marker to the study of geographic variation. Overall, a high per generation migration ratio (Nm = 3.67742 ~ infinite), a low level of genetic fixation (FST = 0 ~ 0.11969), and no discernable isolated population were noted in the most C. medinalis populations. AMOVA analysis to find out allocation of genetic variability of C. medinalis populations has shown allocation of majority of variation to the within-population, rather than among-populations and between-region, suggesting that the C. medinalis populations in both China and Korea are largely well connected. This result is consistent with current knowledge of the dispersal ability of the species. The structure analysis of the A+T-rich region has shown that the typical structural elements found in other lepidopteran insects also is well preserved in the C. medinalis A+T-rich region (i.e., a poly-T stretch and a microsatellite-like A/T repeat).

        다변량 오차수정모형을 이용한 에너지와 국민소득간의 인과관계 분석

        We investigated Granger causal relationship between energy and GDP by two multivariate vector error correction models: one demand side model of energy, GDP, and real energy price and the other production side model of capital, labor, energy and GDP. Empirical results for Korea over the period 1981:1-1999:4 suggest a long run bidirectional causal relationship between energy and GDP in both models. The source of causation in the long run is found to be the ECT`s in both directions. We, however, cannot find causality between energy and GDP in the short run.
