The purpose of this study is to examine the changes in bone mineral density in long-stay patients of a geriatric hospital in relation to physical therapy, thereby providing basic data for preventing the onset or deterioration of osteoporosis in inpatients of geriatric hospitals or relevant facilities. The subjects of this study were 133 elderly patients who had been in H geriatric hospital in Yongin-si for more than four years. Their bone mineral density T-scores at admission and those after four years were measured to compare and analyze the changes in bone mineral density in relation to physical therapy. According to the results, the decrease in T-score for the group without physical therapy was greater by .40 than that for the group with physical therapy, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups(p<.01). Accordingly, physical therapy proved to be effective in preventing bone mineral density loss and maintaining the current density.
Outcome of Multipair Donor Kidney Exchange by a Web-Based Algorithm

<P>Donor kidney exchange is an established method to overcome incompatibility of donor-recipient pairs (DRP). A computerized algorithm was devised to exchange donor kidney and was tested in a multicenter setting. The algorithm was made according to the consensus of participating centers. It makes all possible exchange combinations not only between two incompatible DRP but also circularly among three DRP and selects an optimum set of exchange combinations, considering several factors that can affect the outcome of the exchanged transplant. The algorithm was implemented as a web-based program, and matching was performed five times. Fifty-three DRP were enrolled from five transplant centers. The numbers of DRP that were enrolled in each matching were 38 (25:13), 39 (34:5), 33 (31:2), 32 (28:4), and 34 (30:4) (carryover:newcomer). The numbers of generated exchange combinations were 4:11, 3:17, 2:12, 2:3, and 2:3 (two-pair exchange:three-pair exchange), and the numbers of DRP in selected exchange combinations were six, 12, six, five, and four in each matching. The numbers of DRP with blood type O recipient or AB donor were five and one, respectively, in selected exchange combinations. Six DRP of two-pair exchange combinations and six DRP of three-pair exchange combinations underwent transplantation successfully. Computerized algorithm of donor kidney exchange was tried not only between two incompatible DRP but also circularly among three DRP. It showed that the algorithm has potential to improve the outcome of donor kidney exchange, especially for disadvantaged DRP with blood type O recipients or AB donors.</P>

From 2020, Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency has reset the withdrawal time (WT) for veterinary drugs typically used in livestock in preparation for the introduction of positive list system (PLS) program in 2024. This study was conducted to reset the MRL for amprolium (APL) in broiler chickens as a part of PLS program introduction. Forty-eight healthy Ross broiler chickens were orally administered with APL at the concentration of 60 mg/L (APL-1, n=24) for 14 days and 240 mg/L (APL-2, n=24) for 7 days through drinking water, respectively. After the drug treatment, tissue samples were collected from six broiler chickens at 0, 1, 3 and 5 days, respectively. Residual APL concentrations in poultry tissues were determined using LC-MS/MS. Correlation coefficient (0.99 >), the limits quantification (LOQ, 0.3~5.0 μg/kg), recoveries (81.5~112.4%), and coefficient of variations (<15.5%) were satisfied the validation criteria of Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. In APL-1, APL in all tissues except for kidney was detected less than LOQ at 3 days after drug treatment. In APL-2, APL in liver and kidney was detected more than LOQ at 5 days after treatment. According to the European Medicines Agency’s guideline on determination of withdrawal periods, withdrawal periods of APL-1 and APL-2 in poultry tissues were established to 3 and 2 days, respectively. In conclusion, the developed analytical method is sensitive and reliable for detecting APL in poultry tissues. The estimated WT of APL in poultry tissues is longer than the current WT recommendation of 2 days for APL in broiler chickens.

The antigenic potential of CFA-001, cefazolin, a cephalosporin derivative produced by an enzymatic semisynthesis, was determined in Hartley guinea pigs. A battery of tests employed consisted of active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA), passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), and indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). The results were as follows: 1) In ASA, no signs attributable to anaphylaxis was observed in guinea pigs sensitized with CFA-001, whereas OVA-sensitized animals induced severe anaphylactic symptoms; 2) guinea pigs did not produce antibodies against CFA-001 when sensitized with or without Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) in homologous PCA tests. Meanwhile, antibodies against ovalbumin (OVA) were clearly detected; 3) No CFA-001-specific hemagglutination was observed in the IHA using sera obtained from CFA-001-sensitized guinea pigs. These results suggest that CFA-001 has no antigenicity potential in guinea pigs.

<P>Abstract</P><P><I>Objective:</I> We aimed to describe the efficacy and safety of sunitinib in unselected Korean advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients. <I>Patients and Methods:</I> From November 2005 to August 2008, 132 histologically confirmed advanced RCC patients (100 in the global expanded access program) were enrolled. Response and toxicity were assessed regularly according to the protocol. <I>Results:</I> Within this population, 82.6% had clear cell RCC, and 28.8% were treatment naïve. Patients received a median of 5 cycles of sunitinib (range 1–30), and the mean relative dose intensity was 82.0 ± 14.20 (SD). The progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival rates were 8.2 and 23.1 months, respectively. For the 130 evaluable patients, the objective response rate was 34.1% (n = 45); 44.7% (n = 59) exhibited stable disease. Reasons for discontinuation were disease progression (75.0%) and toxicity (7.6%). The most frequent adverse events were thrombocytopenia (75.0%), neutropenia (70.5%), and anemia (69.7%). Low body surface area (OR = 4.2, 95% CI 1.2–13.8, p = 0.02) and previously treated status (OR = 3.1, 95% CI 1.3–7.4, p = 0.01) were highly predictive of grade 3–4 toxicities. Based on these findings, a nomogram predicting the probability of 12-month PFS was constructed, giving a concordance index of 0.675. <I>Conclusions:</I> Despite the different toxicity profiles, maintaining adequate dose modifications and a careful follow-up enables comparable treatment outcomes for unselected Korean advanced RCC patients.</P><P>Copyright © 2011 S. <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>To evaluate microarray-based genotyping technology for the detection of mutations responsible for retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and to perform phenotypic characterization of patients with pathogenic mutations.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>DNA from 336 patients with RP and 360 controls was analyzed using the GoldenGate assay with microbeads containing 95 previously reported disease-associated mutations from 28 RP genes. Mutations identified by microarray-based genotyping were confirmed by direct sequencing. Segregation analysis and phenotypic characterization were performed in patients with mutations. The disease severity was assessed by visual acuity, electroretinography, optical coherence tomography, and kinetic perimetry.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Ten RP-related mutations of five RP genes (PRP3 pre-mRNA processing factor 3 homolog [<I>PRPF3</I>], rhodopsin [<I>RHO</I>], phosphodiesterase 6B [<I>PDE6B</I>], peripherin 2 [<I>PRPH2</I>], and retinitis pigmentosa 1 [<I>RP1</I>]) were identified in 26 of the 336 patients (7.7%) and in six of the 360 controls (1.7%). The p.H557Y mutation in <I>PDE6B</I>, which was homozygous in four patients and heterozygous in nine patients, was the most frequent mutation (2.5%). Mutation segregation was assessed in four families. Among the patients with missense mutations, the most severe phenotype occurred in patients with p.D984G in <I>RP1</I>; less severe phenotypes occurred in patients with p.R135W in <I>RHO</I>; a relatively moderate phenotype occurred in patients with p.T494M in <I>PRPF3</I>, p.H557Y in <I>PDE6B</I>, or p.W316G in <I>PRPH2</I>; and a mild phenotype was seen in a patient with p.D190N in <I>RHO</I>.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>The results reveal that the GoldenGate assay may not be an efficient method for molecular diagnosis in RP patients with rare mutations, although it has proven to be reliable and efficient for high-throughput genotyping of single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The clinical features varied according to the mutations. Continuous effort to identify novel RP genes and mutations in a population is needed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the genetic diagnosis of RP.</P>

<P>In this paper, the effect of oxygen and nitrogen gas addition to the Ne-Xe mixture discharge gas on the various kinds of image retention was investigated in 42-inch AC Plasma Display Panels. The image retentions were dramatically relieved with a small amount of molecular gas addition. It was observed that the temporal variation of the reset threshold voltage induced by discharge heat-run can be suppressed by adding a small amount of molecular gases to the discharge gas. Both residual gas and cathodoluminescence analyzes showed that the added molecular gases could be incorporated in MgO surface during the discharge. With the investigation on the feasibility, we suggest that a small amount of nitrogen gas addition is suitable for the relief of image retentions which can be adapted in industry.</P>
