In an ongoing survey of Korean indigenous fungi, two fungal strains (KNU16-74 and KNU16-99) belonging to the genus Chrysosporium were isolated from field soil in Gyeongnam, Korea. Morphological characterization and phylogenetic analysis using sequence of the internal transcribed spacer regions were carried out to confirm its precise identification. These strains were identified as Chrysosporium indicum (KNU16-74) and Chrysosporium fluviale (KNU16-99). To examine the keratin degradation efficiency of these two fungal species, human hair strands were incubated with fungus culture. Results revealed that these two fungal species have the ability to degrade keratin substrate. This is the first report of these two species in Korea.

During a survey of fungal diversity in Korea, two fungal strains, KNU17-1 and KNU17-199, were isolated from paddy field soil in Yangpyeong and Sancheong, respectively, in Korea. These fungal isolates were analyzed based on their morphological characteristics and the molecular phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA sequences. On the basis of their morphology and phylogeny, KNU17-1 and KNU17-199 isolates were identified as Albifimbria verrucaria and Deconica coprophila, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, A. verrucaria and D. coprophila have not yet been reported in Korea. Thus, this is the first report of these species in Korea.

( Sun Kumar Gurung ),( Mahesh Adhikari ),( Setu Bazie ),( Hyun Seung Kim ),( Hyun Gu Lee ),( Hyang Burm Lee ),( Youn Su Lee ) 한국균학회 2017 韓國菌學會誌 Vol.45 No.2
Aphanoascus fulvescens KNU16-343 was isolated from crop field soil and identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics. The shape and size of conidia and conidiophores, as well as the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA, confirmed that the isolate was A. fulvescens. This is the first report of this fungal species in Korea.

( Mahesh Adhikari ),( Sun Kumar Gurung ),( Hyun Seung Kim ),( Setu Bazie ),( Hyun Gu Lee ),( Hyang Burm Lee ),( Youn Su Lee ) 한국균학회 2017 Mycobiology Vol.45 No.4
Three new records of Ascomycota species (Chaetomium acropullum, Phialemonium globosum, Phialemonium atrogriseum) from field soils in Korea are presented in this study. These newly discovered fungal isolates were isolated from field soils from various places across Gyeongnam, Korea in 2016. All the isolates were identified and described based on morphological characteristics, and rDNA internal transcribed spacer and β-tubulin gene sequence data. Morphological features of these fungal species were studied on different agar media: potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, Czapek yeast extract agar, and yeast extract sucrose agar. Full description and illustrations of their morphological characters are provided. These fungal species have not officially been previously reported in Korea.

Seven unrecorded species in the phylum Ascomycota, Emericellopsis pallida (KNU16-167), Scedosporium aurantiacum (KNU16-190), Duddingtonia flagrans (KNU16-279), Bionectria rossmaniae (KNU16-309), Exophiala xenobiotica (KNU16-79), Pseudocercosporella fraxini (KNU16-102), and Stachybotrys sansevieriae (KNU16-141), were isolated in 2016 from field soils collected from various locations in Korea. All of the species were identified and described based on morphological characteristics and rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence data. Morphological features of these fungi were examined on potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, Czapek yeast extract agar, and yeast extract sucrose agar. Full descriptions and illustrations of their morphological characteristics are provided.
Aspergillus caninus (Syn: Phialosimplex caninus): a New Isolate from Field Soils in Korea
( Mahesh Adhikari ),( Sun Kumar Gurung ),( Sang Woo Kim ),( Hyun Goo Lee ),( Han Jun Ju ),( Byeong Heon Gwon ),( San Kosol ),( Setu Bazie ),( Hyang Burm Lee ),( Youn Su Lee ) 한국균학회 2018 韓國菌學會誌 Vol.46 No.4
During the study of indigenous fungal communities in soil samples collected from various field soils in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2017, several species of Aspergillus were discovered. Aspergillus caninus (KNU17-7) was isolated, identified, and described based on the results from macro and micro morphological characteristics and molecular characterization. Morphologically, it was identified using five different growth media: potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, yeast extract sucrose agar, czapek yeast extract agar, and malt extract agar. For the molecular identification, sequencing of internal transcribed spacer, β-tubulin, and calmodulin genes was performed. Based on this characterization, our study isolate was identified as Aspergillus caninus. This fungal species has not been officially reported in Korea before, and we report here with its morphological and molecular phylogenetic characterization.

( Mahesh Adhikari ),( Sun Kumar Gurung ),( Sang Woo Kim ),( Hyun Goo Lee ),( Han Jun Ju ),( Byeong Heon Gwon ),( San Kosol ),( Setu Bazie ),( Hyang Burm Lee ),( Youn Su Lee ) 한국균학회 2018 韓國菌學會誌 Vol.46 No.3
Nannizziopsis mirabilis (KNU17-67) was isolated from a field soil sample collected from Jejudo in 2017. This fungal isolate was identified and described by its morphological characters and the internal transcribed spacer rDNA gene sequencing. Potato dextrose agar medium was used to study its macro and micromorphology. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic tree was constructed for its precise confirmation as N. mirabilis . This fungal isolate has not officially been reported previously in Korea.
