CONTENTS : ARTICLES ; Academia and Cultural Production: Yu Dan and Her Confucius from the Heart: Ancient Wisdom for Today`s World

( Shen Shen Cai ) 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2015 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.15 No.1

Chinese professor Yu Dan and her book Yu Dan Lunyu xinde, (Confucius from the Heart: Ancient Wisdom for Today’s World), became an immediate cultural success, contributing to the promotion and the popularity of people’s interest in the Chinese classics and national studies. As a work which bears the marks of both Confucian ideology and popular Confucian cultural traits, the Yu Dan phenomenon captures the development of the national studies craze, in particular those areas relevant to Confucian ideas and principles in contemporary China. Yu Dan’s popularity indicates a recent revival of ancient Chinese cultural, philosophical, and moral traditions in their relationship with modern Chinese society, and their use by contemporary Chinese people. This article analyses the development of the Yu Dan phenomenon and the intense debate it has stimulated, reviewing its subtle collaboration with official discourse and propaganda, and its success as a cultural product. It also analyses the role the Yu Dan phenomenon plays in changing the social status and functions of intellectuals in the contemporary Chinese political-social-cultural milieu.

Capacity Analysis of UWB Networks in Three-Dimensional Space

Cai, Lin X.,Cai, Lin,Shen, Xuemin,Mark, Jon W. The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2009 Journal of communications and networks Vol.11 No.3

Although asymptotic bounds of wireless network capacity have been heavily pursued, the answers to the following questions are still critical for network planning, protocol and architecture design: Given a three-dimensional (3D) network space with the number of active users randomly located in the space and using the wireless communication technology, what are the expected per-flow throughput, network capacity, and network transport capacity? In addition, how can the protocol parameters be tuned to enhance network performance? In this paper, we focus on the ultra wideband (UWB) based wireless personal area networks (WPANs) and provide answers to these questions, considering the salient features of UWB communications, i.e., low transmission/interference power level, accurate ranging capability, etc. Specifically, we demonstrate how to explore the spatial multiplexing gain of UWB networks by allowing appropriate concurrent transmissions. Given 3D space and the number of active users, we derive the expected number of concurrent transmissions, network capacity and transport capacity of the UWB network. The results reveal the main factors affecting network (transport) capacity, and how to determine the best protocol parameters, e.g., exclusive region size, in order to maximize the capacity. Extensive simulation results are given to validate the analytical results.

MiR-125a-5p ameliorates monocrotalineinduced pulmonary arterial hypertension by targeting the TGF-β1 and IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathways

        Zongye Cai,Jian Li,Qi Zhuang,Xueming Zhang,Ancai Yuan,Lan Shen,Kang Kang,Bo Qu,Yuanjia Tang,Jun Pu,Deming Gou,Jieyan Shen 생화학분자생물학회 2018 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.50 No.-

Pulmonary vascular remodeling due to excessive proliferation and resistance to apoptosis of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) is the hallmark feature of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Recent evidence suggests that miR-125a-5p plays a role in a rat model of monocrotaline-induced PAH (MCT-PAH); however, the underlying mechanism is currently unknown. Here, we examined the expression profile of miR-125a-5p in MCT-PAH rats and investigated the putative therapeutic effect of miR-125a-5p using the miR-125a-5p agomir. In addition, the miR-125a- 5p agomir or antagomir was transfected into rat PASMCs, and proliferation and apoptosis were measured. Activity of the miR-125a-5p target STAT3 was measured using a luciferase reporter assay, and the expression of downstream molecules was measured using RT–qPCR and/or western blot analysis. Importantly, inducing miR-125a-5p expression in vivo slowed the progression of MCT-PAH by reducing systolic pulmonary arterial pressure, the Fulton index, and pulmonary vascular remodeling. Moreover, overexpressing miR-125a-5p inhibited the proliferation and promoted the apoptosis of PASMCs. In addition, stimulating PASMCs with TGF-β1 or IL-6 upregulated miR-125a-5p expression, whereas overexpressing miR-125a-5p reduced TGF-β1 and IL-6 production, as well as the expression of their downstream targets STAT3 and Smad2/3; in contrast, downregulating miR-125a-5p increased TGF-β1 and IL-6 production. Finally, a dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that miR-125a-5p targets the 3′-UTR of STAT3, suppressing the downstream molecules PCNA, Bcl-2, and Survivin. Taken together, these findings suggest that miR-125a-5p ameliorates MCT-PAH in rats, has a negative feedback regulation with TGF-β1 and IL-6, and regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of PASMCs by directly targeting STAT3.

Integral-event-triggered H∞ Blood Glucose Control of Type 1 Diabetes via Artificial Pancreas

Shen Yan,Yue Cai 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2024 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.22 No.4

This technical note is concerned with the event-triggered H∞ blood glucose regulation issue of type 1 diabetes by using networked artificial pancreas (AP). In order to improve the service life of AP, an integral-eventtriggered scheme (IETS) is presented to reduce the releasing rate of control signal and the updating times of insulin pump. Compared with the normal event-triggered scheme (ETS), the proposed scheme can generate a larger interevent time by utilizing the integration of the triggering condition in normal ETS. To maintain the blood glucose concentration (BGC) within standard range, the co-design conditions of triggering parameter and H∞ controller are derived by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, the validity of the developed strategy is verified through some simulation results.

Purification and Structural Analysis of Surfactin Produced by Endophytic Bacillus subtilis EBS05 and its Antagonistic Activity Against Rhizoctonia cerealis

        Cai-Yi Wen,Shun-Shan Shen,Zhi-Gang Yin,Kai-Xuan Wang,Jian-Guang Chen 한국식물병리학회 2011 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.27 No.4

Bacillus subtilis EBS05, an endophytic bacteria strain isolated from a medicinal plant Cinnamomum camphor, can produce antagonistic compounds that effectively inhibit plant pathogenic fungi. The greenhouse experiments showed that wheat sharp eyespot disease (WSED)was reduced by 91.2%, 88.2% and 43.0% after the treatment with fermentation broth, bacteria-free filter and a fungicide fludioxonil, respectively. The culture broth of strain EBS05 can more effectively control WSED than can fludioxonil. The fermentation broth and bacteria-free filter ability to suppress WSED was not significantly different, suggesting that an active secreted substance played a major role in controlling WSED. Separation and purification of the active compounds was carried out by serial processes, including hydrochloric acid (pH 2.0) treatment, methanol extraction and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel column chromatography and reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. The purified compounds, one of active peaks in the HPLC spectrum, were obtained from the collection. Analysis of the chemical structures by time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) showed that the active substances produced by the endophytic bacteria EBS05 are mixture of the β-hydroxy-C12~C15-Leu^7 surfactin A isomers with 1035.65Da, 1021.64 Da, 1007.63 Da and 993.65 Da molecular weights, respectively.

Investigation of Capacitor Voltage Regulation in Modular Multilevel Converters with Staircase Modulation

Shen, Ke,Wang, Jianze,Zhao, Dan,Ban, Mingfei,Ji, Yanchao,Cai, Xingguo The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2014 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.14 No.2

This paper presents a detailed theoretical analysis and performance assessment of the capacitor voltage balancing strategies for staircase modulated modular multilevel converters (MMC) in terms of the algorithm structures, voltage balancing effect, and switching frequency. A constant-frequency redundancy selection (CFRS) method with minimal switching loss is proposed and the function realization of specific modules of the algorithm is given. This method is simple and efficient in both switching frequency and regulation capacity. Laboratory results show very good agreement with the theoretical analysis and numerical simulations.

LES of wind environments in urban residential areas based on an inflow turbulence generating approach

        Shen, Lian,Han, Yan,Cai, C.S.,Dong, Guochao,Zhang, Jianren,Hu, Peng Techno-Press 2017 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.24 No.1

Wind environment in urban residential areas is an important index to consider when evaluating the living environment. However, due to the complexity of the flow field in residential areas, it is difficult to specify the correct inflow boundary conditions in the large eddy simulation (LES). In this paper, the weighted amplitude wave superposition (WAWS) is adopted to simulate the fluctuating velocity data, which satisfies the desired target wind field. The fluctuating velocity data are given to the inlet boundary of the LES by developing an UDF script, which is implemented into the FLUENT. Then, two numerical models - the empty numerical wind tunnel model and the numerical wind tunnel model with spires and roughness elements are established based on the wind tunnel experiment to verify the present method. Finally, the turbulence generation approach presented in this paper is used to carry out a numerical simulation on the wind environment in an urban residential area in Lisbon. The computational results are compared with the wind tunnel experimental data, showing that the numerical results in the LES have a good agreement with the experimental results, and the simulated flow field with the inlet fluctuations can generate a reasonable turbulent wind field. It also shows that strong wind velocities and turbulent kinetic energy occur at the passageways, which may affect the comfort of people in the residential neighborhood, and the small wind velocities and vortexes appear at the leeward corners of buildings, which may affect the spreading of the pollutants.
