Vol.1 No.78

What does it mean to stage the suffering of others? The stageing of one’s own pain or other's pain summons the moment of suffering to the stage, rekindling emotions such as sadness, anger, and despair. Tragic events that have existed in history, such as war, slaughter, violence, and social disasters, will be staged because everyone who makes the stage and everyone who watches it wants to communicate with each other through tragic situations. Therefore, most stage is based on the intention of remembering an event through testimony in various ways from various people, and also causing emotions, thoughts, and actions to audiences who have experienced the stage. In this article, I would like to reconsider the process of staging suffering by analyzing the forms of communication made by attempts to staging suffering of others. Especially, I will focus on the strategies of communication through < Talent Show > that a play dealing with suffering.

Antioxidant effects of selenocysteine on replicative senescence in human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells

In most clinical applications, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are expanded in large scale before their administration. Prolonged culture in vitro results in cellular senescence-associated phenotypes, including accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreased cell viabilities. Profiling of stem cell-related genes during in vitro expansion revealed that numerous canonical pathways were significantly changed. To determine the effect of selenocysteine (Sec), a rare amino acid found in several antioxidant enzymes, on the replicative senescence in hMSCs, we treated senescent hMSCs with Sec. Supplementation of Sec in the culture medium in late-passage hMSCs reduced ROS levels and improved the survival of hMSCs. In addition, a subset of key antioxidant genes and Sec-containing selenoproteins showed increased mRNA levels after Sec treatment. Furthermore, ROS metabolism and inflammation pathways were predicted to be downregulated. Taken together, our results suggest that Sec has antioxidant effects on the replicative senescence of hMSCs. MicroRNA controls of cellular senescence

Cellular senescence is a state of permanent cell-cycle arrest triggered by different internal and external stimuli. This phenomenon is considered to be both beneficial and detrimental depending on the cell types and biological contexts. During normal embryonic development and after tissue injury, cellular senescence is critical for tissue remodeling. In addition, this process is useful for arresting growth of tumor cells, particularly during early onset of tumorigenesis. However, accumulation of senescent cells decreases tissue regenerative capabilities and induces inflammation, which is responsible for cancer and organismal aging. Therefore cellular senescence has to be tightly regulated, and dysregulation might lead to the aging and human diseases. Among many regulators of cellular senescence, in this review, I will focus on microRNAs, small non-coding RNAs playing critical roles in diverse biological events including cellular senescence. Molecular signatures of secretomes from mesenchymal stem cells: therapeutic benefits

        Nayoung Suh,Deepa Subramanyam,Mi-Young Lee,M. 2017 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.13 No.2

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been extensively used in both preclinical and clinical studies for a variety of diseases and injury. Accumulating evidence indicates that paracrine function through their secretomes is considered one of the primary attributes for MSC-mediated repair and regeneration. Secretomes from MSCs include both soluble factors and factors released within extracellular vesicles (EVs). Within EVs there are selective subsets of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids that can modulate recipient cells and disease microenvironments. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of MSC-derived secretomes at molecular and therapeutic levels, focusing on their potential as novel cell-free therapies.

Vol.34 No.-

This paper is a critical study of Grotowski's acting theory. In the early 20th century, the belief that human psychology could also be scientifically organized led to a performance training system based on the objectivist acting theory. On the other hand, a series of body-centered movements against rationalism also begin to be made into the language of training. In other words, focusing more on emotions, intuition, instinct, and improvisation rather than human reason, body-centered actor training would be an ideal acting to reveal the true character of an actor without playing a role. This paper aims to concentrate on the actor training of these flows. At first, focusing on the Grotowski’s acting theory, especially ‘via negative’, I will discover the contextual meaning in the content of the exercises and reconsider it from a critical perspective. Forming a specific body technology cannot be separated from discourse and historical contexts that tell how such technology was understood and reproduced. Therefore, the body-centered acting theories should be approached and reinterpreted by contemporary language of acting, which starts from the perspective of reflection and criticism, away from the concept of 'real' and fixed 'self.'

Vol.1 No.67

Everyday, lots of women and student actress enter acting classes where most of them will receive actor training through sex discriminative or gender-blinded acting language. Yet relatively little acting teachers, coaches and instructors’ consideration has been given to the experience of the student actress: What have been happened to women and student actress in actor training? This thesis confronts the sexism that still exists in actor training and exposes the gender biases embedded within the acting language itself. I will focus on acting languages which have been historically used in actor training from three perspectives. Especially, in relation to actor and role, ‘involvement’ is represented by Stanislavsky; ‘self-renunciation’ is Grotowski, ‘detachment’ is Brecht. Like American Method acting, some variation on the Stanislavsky-based emphasize on ‘truth on the stage.’ However, ‘truth’ in traditional mimesis is inextricably intertwined with cultural assumptions about gender. Also, in Grotowski’s theory of body, it can be confirmed that gender-blinded languages such as ‘neutral’ are used. In Brechtian epic theatre, we can find some alternative acting language yet unpractical. From a feminist perspective, it becomes important to expose the assumptions underlying truth claims made by and on behalf of each acting theory. My research on these three aspect of acting theory and training method represents a brief problematic view of acting languages. It is necessary to bring about new understandings of feminist’s view in acting classroom. It will influence the ways that actor training will be conducted in the future.

Vol.29 No.-

In the mid 1990s, Applied Theatre emerged from various theatrical form in England and America. Especially, Applied Theatre was founded out of Theatre such as school, church, prison, hospital, classroom, and so on. However, there is few discourse what is it exactly and how it works. In first chapter, I will make examples several production from different Theatre group as a sample of the Applied Theatre in contemporary Korea. These six different types of Applied Theatre-such as TIE(Theatre in Education), prison theatre, community-based theatre, theatre for development, theatre for health education, social theatre- propose some characters of the Applied theatre. Next chapter addresses a brief historical and theoretical overview of the Applied Theatre and provide a general concept of Applied Theatre. Applied Theatre is a `umbrellal term` which embraces diverse categories of theatrical form. Their commonly determining character as Applied Theatre are `participation` and `transformation`. Then, I will campare the situation if Korean dicourse of the Applied Theatre. Comparing characters of traditional art with participatory art, In the final chapter, I will place Applied Theatre as a participatory art which is socially engaged. Especially, I will focus on some qualities of the Applied Theatre as a `social tern` : liminality, marginality, intervention This process-centered work of collaboration has something beyond in the form itself. Applied Theatre has a intentional strong power as a social transtormation.

Coping with Dementia in the Middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic

2020 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.35 No.42

Multiple neurological complications have been associated with the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. This is a narrative review to gather information on all aspects of COVID-19 in elderly patients with cognitive impairment. First, the following three mechanisms have been proposed to underlie the neurological complications associated with COVID-19: 1) direct invasion, 2) immune and inflammatory reaction, and 3) hypoxic brain damage by COVID-19. Next, because the elderly dementia patient population is particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, we discussed risk factors and difficulties associated with cognitive disorders in this vulnerable population. We also reviewed the effects of the patient living environment in COVID-19 cases that required intensive care unit (ICU) care. Furthermore, we analyzed the impact of stringent social restrictions and COVID-19 pandemic-mediated policies on dementia patients and care providers. Finally, we provided the following strategies for working with elderly dementia patients: general preventive methods; dementia care at home and nursing facilities according to the activities of daily living and dementia characteristics; ICU care after COVID-19 infection; and public health care system and government response. We propose that longitudinal follow-up studies are needed to fully examine COVID-19 associated neurological complications, such as dementia, and the efficacy of telemedicine/telehealth care programs.
