Vol.13 No.1

The purpose of this study was to throughly identify the idea on inclusive physical education from the perspectives of people with disabilities. In order to accomplish this, critical ethnography was used. The key informants were the students(n=12) of Y University in Seoul, the members of the human rights society group for people with disabilities, 'Guernica'. The data were collected through the participant observation, in-depth-interview, unstructured interview and document analysis. The data were interpreted through the qualitative research procedures which are transcription, coding, categorization and conceptualization. The findings could be summarized as follows: First, although people with disabilities were treated inappropriately, they had positive attitudes on inclusive physical education and believed that it could reduce the bias toward people with disabilities. Second, the people with disabilities perceived inclusive physical education as a sport itself, not as a rehabilitation. Third, the precondition for the best inclusive physical education needs for the reform of consciousness in both people with and without disabilities.

      • Engaging in adapted physical activity research broadly: Studies of “adapted” health promotion, diversity and dignified inclusion in active lifestyles, within community contexts

Vol.2016 No.1

Purpose: This presentation aims at discussing broadened ways of engaging in adapted physical activity (APA) research. Opportunities and challenges of pursuing APA research from health promotion, diversity, and community-based approaches will be highlighted. Method: Three young scholars in the field of social justice and equity studies within physical activity contexts were involved in action learning (i.e., an inquiry approach focusing on learning from each other’s experiences; Kemmis & McTaggart, 2005) and narrative inquiry (i.e., a study of experience by writing, sharing, and collaboratively reflecting on stories of one’s lived experience; Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). The presenter’s own reflective insights will be showcased as a storied form, with follow-up discussions. Result: Health promotion approach. Promoting health and wellness amongst persons experiencing disabilities is a priority in APA practice. As such, instead of merely focusing on investigating the therapeutic merits of APA, APA researchers have been exploring ways of increasing the readiness to engage these people in lifelong active lifestyles. The ways in which physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects play roles in the health and wellness amongst these populations within lifespan contexts need to be examined holistically. APA, from this view, then can be seen as studies of “adapted” health promotion. Diversity approach. Inclusiveness is another priority in APA practice to ensure human rights and dignity of persons experiencing disabilities. Accordingly, APA research involves exploring ways of creating inclusive environments in active lifestyles amongst persons experiencing disabilities. However, pursuing inclusion is not only for these people, but also diverse people: Inclusion should be for all. From this perspective, APA research could be viewed much broadly by focusing on diversity (i.e., approaching beyond disability) to ensure the inclusiveness that is for all. Community-based approach. As highlighted in the notion, “nothing about us without us,” disability communities are key players in decision-makings in APA research process. Expert-driven approaches in APA research.that is, research projects designed without careful considerations of the voices of disability communities.are sometimes criticized as paternalistic, irrelevant, and even exploitative. This type of taken-for-granted APA research approaches might be linked to a practical problem: the “disconnections” between researchers and the ultimate beneficiaries of the research, people experiencing disabilities. Ways of knowledge generation and translation in APA, therefore, need to be further explored from the lens of community-based participatory research. Conclusion: The boundaries of APA research have been blurred. Moving beyond therapy-based, medicalized, and expert-driven approaches will open up new possibilities in future APA research. This presentation intends to inspire APA researchers to engage in dialogues to further discuss the scope of APA research.

      • Toward a deeper level of learning in sport and leisure studies: Supporting students in becoming self-regulated and transformative learners

Vol.2016 No.1

Purpose: Students in the field of sport and leisure are active and responsible participants in their own learning. In order to reach a deeper level of learning, students must be fully engaged in their own learning and its outcomes. Self-regulated leaners (i.e., students who are autonomous in their learning) tend to integrate their self-generated thoughts, feelings, and behaviors into their own academic skills. Transformative learners (i.e., reflexive students who are continuously reflecting on and being critical of their own learning) tend to care about their future “becoming” (e.g., being an ethical practitioner in the field of sport and leisure) and “living” (e.g., pursuing ethical professional practices in sport and leisure contexts). Inspiring students, and then helping them translate that passion into proficiency in various subject areas in the field of sport and leisure, are thus keys to the success in post-secondary education. This study aimed at exploring various ways of promoting self-regulated and transformative learning among sport and leisure post-secondary students. Method: Action learning (i.e., an inquiry approach focusing on “bringing people together to learn from each other’s experiences”; Kemmis & McTaggart, 2005, p. 561) and narrative inquiry (i.e., a study of experience aimed at enriching and transforming experiences by writing, sharing, and collaboratively reflecting on stories of one’s lived experience; Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) were utilized. Result: Critical moments, reflexive insights, and transformed practices were captured thorough narrative writings and will be shared during presentation. Examples of engaging in problem solving (e.g., case study approaches to real-world situations), problem posing (e.g., critical writing assignments on controversial issues in current professional practices), and scaffolding approaches (e.g., opportunities for students to share or link their daily experiences to course content) will also be showcased to highlight various practical strategies to support students in becoming self-regulated and transformative learners. Conclusion: This presentation would offer audiences a vicarious experience in which their experiential background is enlarged to engage in various pedagogic approaches that promote self-regulated and transformative learning in their own academic programs.

Vol.19 No.1

Over the decades, evidence-based researches (EBRs) have been regarded as the taken-for-granted way of knowing in the field of adapted physical activity (APA) research practices. Although EBRs have significant contribution in APA knowledge productions, multiple ways of knowing should be visible in the APA research literature. As a consequence, the authors intend to highlight there are not only EBRs, but also multiple ways of knowing in APA research practices. This paper explores how the current APA qualitative research paradigms (post-positivism, interpretive paradigm, critical paradigm) produce their knowledge and highlights the contributions and limitations of each research project. Finally, the future possibility of post-structuralist and post-modernist understandings in APA qualitative research practices are discussed.

Vol.19 No.4

The purpose of this study was to examine the issues related to Oscar Pistorius` eligibility of participation in an able-bodied sporting event. Multiple text analysis (Keats, 2009) was utilized for analyzing written, visual, and spoken texts about Oscar Pistorius` eligibility issues. Three themes were emerged: (a) fairness of the competition, (b) use of the technology, and (c) aftermath of the decision. The themes were represented through ``creative analytic processes ethnography`` (Richardson & St.Pierre, 2005). Finally, future research agendas of the field of adapted physical activity were discussed based on the emerged themes.

Vol.19 No.2

Narrative inquiry studies experiences(Clandinin & Rosiek, 2007). One of the purposes in of the field of adapted physical activity (APA) is understanding the lived experiences of people with disabilities. In this paper, therefore, we aimed to explore the potential contributions of narrative ways to knowing in the field of APA. By exploring the turn to narrative, the authors intended to highlight how the narrative approaches differ from other research methodologies. Next, various narrative inquiry approaches and their methodological traditions were outlined. Finally, how the narrative ways of knowing might benefit the Korean APA study was illustrated. This paper aims to serve as the rationale for using narrative inquiry as another way of knowing in APA studies.
