Background: Eosinophilic inflammation of airway is usually associated with airway hyperresponsiveness in bronchial asthma. However, there is a small group of patients who has the eosinophilic inflammation in the bronchial tree with normal spirometry and no evidence of airway hyperresponsiveness, which was named eosinophilic bronchitis. The objectives of this study are 1) to investigate the incidence of eosinophilic bronchitis in the chronic cough syndrome and 2) to evaluate the clinical features and course of eosinophilic bronchitis. Methods : We evaluated 92 patients who had persistent cough for 3 weeks or longer. In addition to usual diagnostic protocol, we performed differential cell count of sputum. Eosinophilic bronchitis was diagnosed when the patient had normal spirometic values, normal peak expiratory flow variability, no airway hyperresponsiveness, and sputum eosinophilia(>3%). Result : The causes of choronic cough were post-nasal drip in 33%, cough variant asthma in 16%, bronchitis in 15%, and eosinophilic bronchitis in 12% of the study subjects. Initial eosinophil percentage in sputum of patience with eosinophilic bronchitis was 26.8±6.1% (3.8-63.7%). Treatment with inhaled steroid is related with a subjective improvement of cough severity and a significant decrease of sputum eosinophil percentage (from 29.1±8.3% to 7.4±3.3%)/ During the follow up period of over ? months, recurrence of cough of was associated with reappearance of sputum eosinophilia. Conclusion : Eosinophilic bronchitis is one of the important causes of chronic cough. Assessment of airway inflammation by sputum examination is important in investigating the cause of chronic cough. Cough in eosinophilic bronchitis are effectively controlled by inhaled corticosteroid, but it recurs frequently over a long term period of follow-up(Korean J Med 60:77-84, 2001)
Towards an effective theory for vortices in layered superconductors

We present a possible step towards constructing an effective theory for vortices in layered superconductors. Starting from the Lawrence-Doniach model, we transform the inter-layer coupling term appropriately to construct an effective Hamiltonian. In the present scheme, all the thermodynamic quantities in a layered system are expressed in terms of the corresponding quantities describing two-dimensional vortex liquids.
류마티스관절염 환자에서 형광 안저 촬영을 이용한 미세혈관 변화의 관찰

Objective. Although a series of trials support that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with increased atherosclerosis, the link between microvascular structural changes and the disease activity of RA has not been clarified. We measured changes in the retinal microvasculature using fundus fluorescein angiography (FAG) and investigated the association between the retinal vasculature and clinical parameters of RA. Methods. Seventy-five RA patients and sixty healthy control were included. Morphometric and quantitative features in the capillary images including retinal vascular signs and vessel diameters were measured with fundus photography and FAG. RA activity was assessed based on high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), disease activity score with 28 joints (DAS 28), and health assessment questionnaire (HAQ). Results. Central retinal arteriolar equivalents (CRAE) was 118.1±31.3 μm in RA patients and 123.8±19.9 μm in control subjects, showing the tendency of retinal arteriolar narrowing in patients with RA but without statistical significance. The mean central retinal venular equivalents (CRVE) was 162.4±26.4 μm which was significantly higher than that of control group (144.1±23.1 μm, p<0.001). The prevalence of AVN was 34.7%, and significantly higher in RA group. Among retinal findings, the presence of early pinpoint hyperfluorescence and areas of delayed choroidal perfusion correlated with hsCRP. Age, disease duration, DAS 28, HAQ, and rheumatoid factor (RF) had no effect on CRAE and CRVE. In multivariate analysis, only hsCRP was found to be associated with wider venular caliber. Conclusion. Retinal venular widening was more common in RA patients. Retinal venular diameter had significant correlation with disease activity of RA. Retinal imaging is a comparative method for the assessment of microvascular findings of RA patients.

<P>Conclusions-Our study shows that PP when measured in the acute period of ischemic stroke has nonlinear J-shaped relationships with major vascular events and stroke recurrence, and may have a stronger predictive power than other commonly used BP parameters.</P>

Background: Hyaluronic acid(HA) fillers have become popular soft tissue filler augmentation agents over the past several years. Many new brands of HA fillers are being produced, but comparative research on the characteristics of similar products is limited. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of a new HA filler, PP-501-B (Cleviel contour®, Pacific pharm., Korea) which is used for correcting nasolabial folds (NLFs), and compare PP-501-B with Restylane Perlane® (Q-Med, Uppsala, Sweden). Methods: One hundred three subjects with visible NLFs were enrolled in a randomized, multi-center, patient & evaluator-blind, active-controlled, matched-pair clinical study. Each subject was injected with PP-501-B in one NLF and Restylane Perlane® in the other. All participants were then reassessed for cosmetic change at 8, 16, and 24 weeks. Wrinkle severity was rated using the 5-point wrinkle severity rating scale (WSRS) Results: At week 24, the mean improvement in the WSRS from baseline was 1.87 ± 0.73 for the PP-501-B side and 1.92 ± 0.71 for the Restylane Perlane®. Both fillers were well-tolerated and adverse reactions were mild and transient in most cases. Conclusion: The addition of a new HA filler, PP-501-B with suitable characteristics and ample safety profiles to the market will widen the selection for physicians and patients because the purpose, area, and depth of filler injections are variable by treatment.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Lactobacillus paracasei LDTM7412 Strain in the Murine Macrophage Cells

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a relapsing chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract accompanied by abdominal pain and diarrhea. Although the exact cause of IBD is still unknown, genetic and environmental factors comprising dysbiosis of gut microbiota and impairment of intestinal mucosal barrier function have been considered for causing IBD. In this study, the L. paracasei LDTM7412 strain isolated from infant feces showed an anti-inflammatory effect in the RAW-264.7 murine macrophage cell inflammation model compared to L. rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103). Furthermore, the strain is suitable for probiotic properties based on safety assessment and intestinal adhesion ability. The results suggest that the strain L. paracasei LDTM7412 has the potential to treat IBD by alleviating intestinal inflammation as an alternative or assistant approach to ameliorate dysbiosis and reduce inflammation.
