        Bakhtinian Analysis of Social Engagement at Preschool Clean-up Time: Carnival for Engaging Everyone

        Drawing on an ethnographic study of two immigrant children’s first year experiences at U. S. preschools, this paper reports the children’s social engagement through clean-up time. Data were collected and analyzed through participant observations and video-cued interviews. Framed by research of peer culture in preschool and Bakhtin’s concept of carnival, I examine differences between playtime and clean-up time that resulted in the two children’s different degrees of social engagement at each time. Findings show that the carnivalistic mode of clean-up time allows the children to be free from the social order at playtime and actively use the time for enriching their social engagement. The findings suggest that educators recognize constraints immigrant children experience from the established order at school and the need to rethink the value of carnivalistic moments such as clean-up time for social engagement of all children.

        “Would You Tell My Teacher to Let Me in the Block Center?”: A Case Study of a Korean Immigrant Boy`s Peer Interactions and Preschool Peer Culture at Playtime

        This study presents the case of Hoon, a 4-year-old Korean immigrant boy and his initial adjustment to an American preschool, by focusing his interactions with peers at playtime in relation to peer culture. Data were collected for four months through participatory observations during in-class playtime and interviews with the boy`s mother and teacher. The findings revealed that children in the classroom played according to a peer culture and the rules in each play center. This study found that Hoon`s different interactions with his peers in each center reflected his understanding of the peer culture, thus demonstrating the possibility of a play center with a peer culture that helps an immigrant child`s positive peer interactions. The study suggests that teachers should (a) understand peer culture and its effects on minority children, and (b) reflect on their practices to avoid practices that minimize immigrant children`s agency.

        Understanding Two Korean Children’s Nonverbal Communication for Social Engagement at U. S. Preschools

        Through eight months of ethnographic observations and child interviews, this study explores two Korean children’s unique ways of nonverbal communication for social engagement at English-dominant U. S. preschools. Informed by studies of children’s peer culture, the study identifies three patterns of nonverbal communication used for the purpose of playing together or protecting a play activity. Drawing on Bakhtin’s ideas, a nonverbal language is conceptualized as having the following features: speaking voice, addressee, and a systemic way of presentation. These features are examined in the three patterns of nonverbal communication. The findings highlight the children’s capability to develop nonverbal ways of communication in accordance with classroom peer culture as well as with their home culture. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests that teachers appreciate the important role of nonverbal languages, carefully observe minority children’s actions in a different light, and support linguistic minority children’s communication and social engagement with children from the dominant culture.

      • The risk of psychiatric disorders among patients with psoriasis in Korea: a 12-year nationwide population-based cohort study

        Background: Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease with a high impact on self-esteem and patients’ health related quality of life. Objectives: The association between psoriasis and risk of psychiatric disorders has not been thoroughly evaluated in a large longitudinal cohort of Asian population Methods: We conducted a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study encompassing more than 1.6 million Koreans with a 12-year follow-up period. Patients were considered in the psoriasis cohort if they had an incident diagnostic code for psoriasis and included patients were followed up until they developed any psychiatric disease Results: In adjusted models, psoriasis patients (n = 10,868) were at a 18% increased risk for depression (hazard ratio [HR] 1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-1.26), 16% for anxiety disorders (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08-1.26), and 21% for somatoform disorders (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.08-1.34) compared with the referent cohort (n = 1,620,055). Patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis had a higher risk of developing depression and somatoform disorders than patient with mild disease (depression, HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.07-1.54 vs HR 1.17 95% CI 1.07-1.27; somatoform disorders, HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.26-2.03 vs HR 1.13, 95% CI 1.00-1.28). Conclusion: Our results highlight the burden of psychiatric diseases in patient with psoriasis in Korea and suggest that appropriate medical support for possible mental illness is warranted in Asian psoriatic patients.

        보육교사의 인권감수성과 아동권리인식이 유아문제행동지도전략에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 보육교사의 인권감수성과 아동권리인식이 문제행동지도 전략에 미치는 영향을 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 보육교사 212명을 대상으로 설문조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 보육교사의 아동권리인식이 높을수록 긍정적 지도전략의 사용이 높고, 인권감수성과 보호권 인식이 높을수록 부정적 전략의 사용이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 보육교사의 인권감수성과 아동권리인식이 유아의 문제행동지도전략에 유의한 영향을 미치는데, 유의한 영향을 미치는 변인은 지도전략유형에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 구체적으로 아동권리 중 생존권 인식은 긍정적 예방전략, 참여권 인식은 반응전략을 높이고, 인권감수성의 하위요인 중 책임지각은 부정적 반응전략을 낮추는 데 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 보육기관에서 유아문제행동지도가 긍정적으로 이루어지기 위하여 보육교사의 인권감수성과 아동권리인식 증진을 돕는 교사교육 프로그램 개발 및 지원의 필요성을 시사한다. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of childcare teachers human right sensitivity and child right awareness on behavior management strategies. First, the results showed that childcare teachers human right sensitivity and awareness of children s rights of protection were negatively correlated with teachers’ negative response strategies, and child right awareness had a positive correlation with positive prevention and response strategies. Second, it was found that teachers’ child right awareness had a significant effect on enhancing teachers’ positive prevention and response strategies and that teachers’ human right sensitivity had a significant effect on reducing negative strategies. The results of this study suggest the need to develop and support teacher education programs to help childcare teachers improve their human right sensitivity and awareness of children s rights.

        3-5세 누리과정 과학교육의 내용 분석: ‘과학적 탐구하기’를 중심으로

        본 연구의 목적은 유치원 교육과정(누리과정) 5개영역 중 자연탐구영역에 제시된 과학 활동의 내용구성 및 접근방식을 연령별로 분석하는 것이다. 연구대상은 누리과정 교사용 지도서에 제시된 총 674개의 ‘과학적 탐구하기’ 활동이며, 각 활동의 생활 주제, 과학 내용요소 및 활동유형과 접근방법을 누리과정과 과학교육 문헌에 제시된 기준에 따라 분석하였다. 자료처리는 빈도와 백분율을 산출하여 연령별 분포 경향을 살펴보았다. 분석 결과 특정 생활주제와 내용요소에 상당수의 활동이 편중되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 활동유형별 분포는 전 연령에서 대소집단-자유선택-바깥활동의 순으로 나타났으며, 연령이 높아질수록 조형활동과 교구를 통한 과학교육 접근법이 줄고 언어와 이야기나누기를 통한 접근법이 주가 되어 제시된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로, 누리과정의 과학적 탐구 활동이 구체적 경험과 탐색을 통한 학습이라는 유아교육 원리와는 다소 다른 방향으로 치우쳐 분포되어 있음이 지적되었다. 끝으로 유치원 현장의 균형적 과학교육을 위한 시사점 및 개정 교육과정의 방향과 추후 연구를 위한 제언이 제시되어 있다 The purpose of this study is to analyze science education in Nuri curriculum for Age 3 to 5 children, focusing on contents and methods of scientific exploration activities in teacher guidebooks. The subjects of the study were 647 activities specified as scientific exploration among 2099 activities in Nuri curriculum teacher guidebooks. These activities were analyzed through two criteria for classifications - contents and methods . The results showed that lots of the activities more likely contain certain themes(four seasons, animals&plants, tools) and content areas(learning living things & nature environment, using tools). Also, the results showed that many activities for 5 year olds are presented in forms of circle time, using more verbal forms. This study examined whether scientific exploration activities presented in teacher guidebooks contain proper learning contents and methods for science education and whether these activities evenly keep the balance in terms of educational contents and methods. This study may promote understanding about the scientific activities in teacher guidebooks, and can be helpful to people who want to develop new guide books or revise them.
