Importance of Free-Throw Performance in Game Outcome During the Final Series of Basketball Play-offs
( Jaime Sampaio ),( Manuel Janeira ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2003 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.15 No.2
This study was conducted to identify the contribution of free-throw performance to the game final outcome (winning or losing) in the final series of play-off games regarding three competition levels: superior (NBA league from USA), intermediate (ACB league from Spain) and inferior (LPB league from Portugal). The studied sample was 12 games from the 2000-2001 play-off final series of the NBA (5 games), ACB (3 games) and LPB (4 games). A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with independent measures (outcome × league) was used to analyze the data. Results confirmed that winning teams scored a higher percentage of their points through free-throws; these differences became stronger in the last minute of the game. Average free-throw percentages ranged from 70% to 75% in the three leagues and the percentage of points scored by free throws ranged from 19% to 25%. Results seem to support the hypothesis that free-throw performance was a deciding factor in NBA`s third period and in ACB`s last minute of the game.
