Histological analysis on tissues around orthodontically intruded maxillary molars using temporary anchorage devices: A case report

        Hui-Chen Tsai,Julia Yu-Fong Chang,Chia-Chun Tu,Chung-Chen Jane Yao 대한치과교정학회 2023 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.53 No.2

Before progress was recently made in the application of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) in bio-mechanical design, orthodontists were rarely able to intrude molars to reduce upper posterior dental height (UPDH). However, TADs are now widely used to intrude molars to flatten the occlusal plane or induce counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. Previous studies involving clinical or animal histological evaluation on changes in periodontal conditions after molar intrusion have been reported, however, studies involving human histology are scarce. This case was a Class I malocclusion with a high mandibular plane angle. Upper molar intrusion with TADs was performed to reduce UPDH, which led to counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. After 5 months of upper molar intrusion, shortened clinical crowns were noticed, which caused difficulties in oral hygiene and hindered orthodontic tooth movement. The mid-treatment cone-beam computed tomography revealed redundant bone physically interfering with buccal attachment and osseous resective surgeries were followed. During the surgeries, bilateral mini screws were removed and bulging alveolar bone and gingiva were harvested for biopsy. Histological examination revealed bacterial colonies at the bottom of the sulcus. Infiltration of chronic inflammatory cells underneath the non-keratinized sulcular epithelium was noted, with abundant capillaries being filled with red blood cells. Proximal alveolar bone facing the bottom of the gingival sulcus exhibited active bone remodeling and woven bone formation with plump osteocytes in the lacunae. On the other hand, buccal alveolar bone exhibited lamination, indicating slow bone turnover in the lateral region.

Fabrication of Multifunctional Polyester Fabrics by Using Fluorinated Polymer Coatings

        Chia-Jung Chen,Wen-Hui Li,Wei-Yu Chen,Yu-Min Yang 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.10

Facile and effective polymer coatings are highly desirable in the creation of functional surfaces for variousapplications. A polymer coating by using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) and a fluorinatedalkyl silane (FAS-17) in volatile solvent has been proposed in the literature for the fabrication of chemically stable andsuperamphiphobic fabrics. This method, however, suffered from the fact that the results were unable to be experimentallyreproduced by the authors. In this work, FAS-17-modified PVDF-HFP with surface energy of 14.04 mN/m was preparedthrough two-step reactions in acetone using coupling agent 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (H2N-(CH2)3-Si-(OCH3)3) and1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS-17, F3C-(CF2)7-(CH2)2-Si-(OC2H5)3) in the first and second reaction steps, respectively. This coating solution was then applied onto the twill weave polyester fabric using a dip-coating method. The asfabricatedsurfaces exhibited extreme liquid repellency as signified by high static contact angles (149.5 o-105.7 o) against sixpure liquids (water, ethylene glycol, hexadecane, pentadecane, nonane, octane) with surface tension values ranging from 72.8to 21.4 mN/m. Furthermore, this coating showed chemical stability to strong acid (96 % sulfuric acid) and strong base (38 %sodium hydroxide). In addition to self-cleaning property, the coating also exhibited self-healing property as revealed by thestatic contact angle change with the plasma-and-heat treatment cycles. Moreover, it is interesting to note that coating offabrics with the pristine solution of PVDF-HFP and FAS-17 may instead find its potential applications in oil-waterseparation. High separation efficiency, stability, and reusability were exhibited by the as-fabricated separation membrane.

      • The most ideal interval between blastocyst biopsy and vitrification applied in preimplantation genetic screening (PGS)

        ( Hui-ying Low ),( Hsiu-hui Chen ),( Chun-chia Huang ),( Tsung-hsien Lee ),( Chung-i Chen ),( Lii-sheng Huang ),( Maw-sheng Lee ) 대한산부인과학회 2016 대한산부인과학회 학술대회 Vol.102 No.-

Study Question: To evaluate the most ideal interval between blastocyst biopsy and vitrification in preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). Study Design, Size, Duration: This is a retrospective study and total 224 patients underwent the PGS from 2012 Dec. to 2015 Mar. All of patients underwent blastocyst vitrification after biopsy and 1~2 euploid blastocyst for transfer after warming. The primary outcome measures were the implantation and pregnancy rates per PGS-frozen embryo transfer cycle. Materials, Setting, Methods: The blastocyst grading including grade 4, 5 and 6 (according to Gardner grading system) on day 5 or day 6 were selected for trophectoderm biopsy. All blastocyst underwent vitrification immediately (interval: 0.5 hour) or 1 to 7 hours after biopsy. At the time of vitrification the grade of blastocyst expansion was also recorded. All patients were divided into two groups according to the grade of expanded (Group1: ≤1/2 expansion (n=41), Group2: ≥3/4 expansion (n=183)). Furthermore, combined two factors including the interval and morphology of blastocyst after biopsy, all patients were further divided into interval 1 (<3 hours and ≤1/2 expansion) and interval 2 (≥3 hours and ≥3/4 expansion). The morphologically best euploid blastocyst(s) (1~2 embryos) was/were selected first for transfer on the next cycle. Main Results: Assessment morphology of blastocyst after biopsy in different interval, at 0.5 hour after biopsy, 100% blastocyst was non-expansion; at 1 hour after biopsy, only 17% blastocyst was 3/4 expansion or all-expansion; at 3 hours after biopsy, 86% blastocyst was 3/4 expansion or all-expansion and after 5.5 hours, 100% blastocyst was all-expansion or hatching. All blastocysts were survival (100%, 359/359) after warming. The mean of embryo transfer number between all groups were no significantly difference. The implantation rate in Group2 (63.4%) was significantly higher than that in Group1 (46.9%, p=0.014). The pregnancy rates in Group4 (73.8%) was sig-nificantly higher than that in Group1 (51.2%, p=0.004). The implantation and pregnancy rates in the group of embryo ≥3/4 expansion combined with ≥3 hours after biopsy (63.6%, 178/280; 73.8%, 127/172) were significantly higher than that in the group of ≤1/2 expansion with <3 hour (45.6, 26/57; 50.0%, 18/36; p=0.0113 and p=0.0056, respectively). Conclusion: The most ideal interval between biopsy and vitrification was least 3 hours and ≥3/4 expansion of blastocyst after biopsy could improve the implantation and pregnancy rates for PGS.

A Study on the Application of Cultural Semiotics in the Attractive Factor of Flower

        Chia-Hui, Huang,Wen-Hui, Chen,Kim, Young Sam 한국일러스트레이션학회 2017 일러스트레이션 포럼 Vol.18 No.51

The purpose of this study is to explore the application of cultural semiotics in the attractiveness factor of flower arrangement. In addition, the study also applies the evaluation grid method of Miryoku Engineering to summarize the attractiveness factor of flower arrangement. After conducting an interview with the use of 14 originally-invented flower arrangement cards, we have found that the applications of cultural semiotics in the attractive factors of flower arrangement can be mainly subdivided into the following categories: "floral style", "field space", "food culture", "local feature", "nostalgic memory", "spiritual aspect", and "installation art". From the evaluation grid method of Miryoku Engineering, we know that the first three keynotes to the applications of cultural semiotics in the attractive factors of flower arrangement are "color design", "focus contrast", and "artwork size". On the other hand, creative factors such as "beautified", "serene", "modern", "leisure", and "situated" are also widely applied to the abstract cause. This study is mainly designed to summarize the application of cultural semiotics in the attractive factor of flower arrangement, which provides future flower arrangement with an improvement standard and application criteria to refer to.

      • Glutathione S-Transferase Expression in Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinomas: a Taiwan Study

        Chen, Szu-Han,Wu, Wen-Jeng,Tu, Hung-Pin,Li, Wei-Ming,Huang, Chun-Nung,Li, Ching-Chia,Lin, Hui-Hui,Ke, Hung-Lung Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.11

Objectives: Glutathione S-transferase (GST) isoenzymes play important roles in resistance to cell apoptosis and carcinogenesis. We aimed to establish the relationship between GST expression and the prognosis of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTT-UC) in Taiwan. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 46 patients with pathologically confirmed UUT-UC at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital. In each patient, expression of GSTT1 and GSTP1 was compared between urothelial carcinoma and normal urothelial cells by Western blotting. Results: GSTP1 expression in the UUT-UC cells was significantly higher than that in normal urothelial cells (1.6 fold, p<0.001). Expression of GSTT1 was significantly associated with the invasiveness of the carcinoma (p=0.006). Conclusions: In UUT-UC, GSTP1 might be a potential tumor marker, whereas high GSTT1 expression could be used as an indicator of cancer progression. This study is the first to demonstrate potential applications of different GST isoenzymes for biomolecular analysis of UUT-UCs in Taiwan.

      • The Transition from Dripping to Jetting of a Water Jet Under Rigid Body Rotation

        ( Chun-chia Chang ),( Chun-kuei Chen ),( Ta-hui Lin ) 한국액체미립화학회 2017 한국액체미립화학회 학술강연회 논문집 Vol.2017 No.-

This research is dedicated to analyzing the characteristic of a liquid jet under various conditions, for example, different flow rate and rotating speed. In this study, we found out that the imposed rotation would shorten the breakup length of a liquid jet due to its extra disturbance. On the other hand, hysteresis behavior occurs when using relatively large nozzle diameter, which represents that the critical flow rate of the transition from dripping to jetting is different to that from jetting to dripping. Consequently, we further analyzed the critical rotating speed (Jetting→Dripping) and critical flow rate (Dripping→ Jetting) in this hysteresis zone. As for the last part of this study, the breakup patterns had been deducted, we can divided the breakup modes into three distinguished patterns basically by how the droplets are formed, which are steady formation, two-drop coalescence, multiple-drop coalescence, respectively. Last but not least, the mutual interaction between these three patterns and how the rotation affected the outcomes of a liquid jet are concluded in this research.

Impact of microbiota in colorectal carcinogenesis: lessons from experimental models

        Linda Chia-Hui Yu,Shu-Chen Wei,Yen-Hsuan Ni 대한장연구학회 2018 Intestinal Research Vol.16 No.3

A role of gut microbiota in colorectal cancer (CRC) growth was first suggested in germ-free rats almost 50 years ago, and the existence of disease-associated bacteria (termed pathobionts) had becoming increasingly evident from experimental data of fecal transplantation, and microbial gavage or monoassociation. Altered bacterial compositions in fecal and mucosal specimens were observed in CRC patients compared to healthy subjects. Microbial fluctuations were found at various cancer stages; an increase of bacterial diversity was noted in the adenoma specimens, while a reduction of bacterial richness was documented in CRC samples. The bacterial species enriched in the human cancerous tissues included Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis. The causal relationship of gut bacteria in tumorigenesis was established by introducing particular bacterial strains in in situ mouse CRC models. Detailed experimental protocols of bacterial gavage and the advantages and caveats of different experimental models are summarized in this review. The microbial genotoxins, enterotoxins, and virulence factors implicated in the mechanisms of bacteria-driven tumorigenesis are described. In conclusion, intestinal microbiota is involved in colon tumorigenesis. Bacteria-targeting intervention would be the next challenge for CRC.

A Study on the Perception and Preference of the Wuxing Image Integrated into the Lucky Charm

        TSAI I-CHEN,Chen, Chun-Chih,Chia-Hui Huang 한국일러스트레이션학회 2021 일러스트레이션 포럼 Vol.22 No.66

Lucky charms are mainly derived from people's wish to bring good luck or get rid of misfortune through the power of faith. Confronted by obstacles and disappointments, modern people would turn to traditional cultural beliefs to help them get over difficulties. Consumers in Taiwan are showing growing interests in lucky charms, while manufacturers are working hard to develop various types of lucky charms to meet the diverse needs of consumers. In recent years, most of the lucky charms are based on tangible or intangible images from religions, geomantic omen, folklore, etc. Also, in response to consumers' aesthetic needs, more aesthetic elements are incorporated into the design. Besides fundamental elements of religion, geomantic omen, folklore and other beliefs, manufacturers also need to understand consumers' perception and preferences to better meet their needs. The study aimed to explore the perception and preference of consumers for Wuxing lucky charms, and analyze consumers’ preferences of the geomantic omen images. This paper collected data through literature review and questionnaire survey of 79 people based on their identity and preference to identify important factors that influence consumers' preference so as to facilitate the design of lucky charms. The study analyzed the respondents' preferences of typical Wuxing lucky charms through the questionnaire survey, and found consumers prefer traditional, refined and delicate design. Also, they like products that could bring them good luck, revealing consumers' preference for geomantic omen image. This study will help manufacturers determine the focus of design, and provide references in this regard. From the study, we found that products with explicit colors can arouse more resonance from consumers. Therefore, it is suggested that when designing the Wuxing products, we can increase the use of Wuxing colors to highlight its characteristics and charms, and better meet the needs of consumers.
