In this dissertation, I tried a film historiography centering on how gender is expressed in 1930's Korean films. By scrutinizing how gender is represented and transformed in the 'films' made in 'Joseon(Korea)', I tried to recall the specific period of 1930s and locate Korean films in the configuration of here and now. Reading the 1930's film text as a medium of cultural experience and examining representation of gender in it will reveal what Korean modernity aimed to achieve. For Korean films, 1930s was an epoch of dynamic and fluctuating change comprised of short periods of prosperity, extinction, talking film and collaboration with government policy. A total of 73 films were produced in 1930s, of which 6 including defective ones are available to us; Turning Point of the Youngsters(청춘의 십자로) a silent film produced in 1934, Sweet Dream(미몽) a talking film produced in 1936, Shim-cheong(심청) a defective talking film adapted from a classical novel and produced in 1937, Military Train(군용열차) the very first pro-Japanese militarism film produced in 1938, Fisherman's Fire(어화) a film full of local color produced in 1938, I Will Die Under My Flag(국기 아래서 나는 죽으리) a defective pro-government policy film produced in 1939. Turning Point of the Youngsters, with the help of modern imagination, tries to set up a new perspective on women and constructively reflects freshness and vitality of new woman. The film is roaming from a brave and cheerful woman to a sorrowful woman, from a energetic woman to a woman in danger. The film's striking images of women scarcely seen before show women's disillusionment about the conventional definition of gender. Through the narrative of losing home-going astray-being rescued, the heroines are lost in a city but demonstrate the possibility to break down social norms and tradition with their own will. The ending in which the heroines refuse to compromise with reality reveals the film's implied message to oppose the Japanese colonialism. The film itself deploys events in male perspective and stresses women being seen, the women being rescued and forming a family symbolically satisfies repressed desire of men under colonial domination. In Sweet Dream, women's desire dynamically interacts with city space and is visualized through the heroine's gaze. The provocative woman, being the object of a camera, the consumer culture and spectators' eyes, is a new subject who enjoys city life; strutting along a street, going to theater, browsing in a department store's display windows and buying products. The pioneer dubbed as New Woman is now deprived of enlightening significance and becomes a Modern Girl, a pleasure-seeking, money-spending woman, who eventually comes into conflict with social norms. The heroine's transgression against patriarchal ideology results in bitter regret and tragic ending. It actually brings Korean male in a place safe from anxiety of masculinity. Woman, in the prison of twofold colonization of being a colonized and a woman, plays the role of a buffer for the anxieties of a colonizer and a patriarchal male on the one hand, and an embodiment of the twofold modernization emphasizing two opposite aspects of modernity and tradition on the other. Although Fisherman's Fire was produced in the period of pro-Japanese militarism, it is usually considered a female melodrama and seems to have evaded the burden of outspoken political propaganda. However its superficial local color is sustained by a desire for the pure and the essential, a desire comprising of racial fear and exclusionism. The anxiety against Western invasion and extinction of the East results in imagining the local as the pure. The narrative of a farm village born maiden's triangular melodrama, seeking hometown and seeking a love, actually functions as a political propaganda. Military Train, produced right after the Sino-Japanese war, is a pro-Japanese propaganda film that glorifies Korean railway's important mission as the military's transportation means. In this very first militarism film Seo Gwangje reveals the divided sentiments regarding the Korean: The Korean tradition should be done away with to pursue modernization, but it is also needed to preserve the characteristics of Korea in converting the Koreans into Emperor's subjects. This ambivalence expresses itself in the contrasting ways of portraying Sunhi and Yeongsim. The comparison and overlapping of the two women is called for symbolizing the harmony between the modern and the traditional, between Japan and Korea. In this film two cultures do not collide with each other, rather embodies the political idea of harmony between different cultures and nations, of collaboration of two nations. The film collaborates with the nationalistic project by emphasizing a woman who becomes a submissive wife and an active man who takes the lead in the project of becoming the emperor's subject. In this research, I tried to trace the journey Korean film has taken in 1930s. In early 1930s Korean film was born and evolved in changed modern scenary, and in disillusionment about modernity Korean film of mid-1930s introduced new discourses on modernity and found 'Korea', and in the late 1930s it found the 'nation' which is Japan. By focusing on the matter of gender I tried to find out how the abstract concepts of modernity had been visualized and materialized in 1930's films. The understanding of gender identity has been changed along social change, and gender was a contact zone where the modern and the traditional, the imperialism and the colonized were competing with each other.
An issue on creative usage of modern cultural heritage has been emerged. As introducing the cultural heritage registration system, the neglected cultural heritage of early modern times has been protected in recent years and they have been highly valued as being used for public accomodations or commercial facilities. However, it leaves something to be desired in that the uses of modern cultural heritage is weighted towards buildings. Since 2007, 8 Korean classic movies were designated as a registered cultural property as a film. Unfortunately, they are merely preserved rather than being developed as a tool for applicable open program to the public. Also, most studies on registered cultural property of film is restricted to analysis on characteristics or significance that a work has and studies on its utilization are hardly found. The registered cultural heritage of film has appeared whenever the Korean movie history went through occasions and has representativeness of movie history. In addition, as containing historic occasions and tortuous Korean stories, it is highly evaluated and has significance not only historically but also culturally. This study is to share the significance and value that the registered cultural heritage of film has and to expand the scope of usage on modern cultural heritage up to film. Thus, while diagnosing a historic-cultural status and utilization of the registered cultural heritage of film, it seeks how to utilize it by combining with other fields. Judging that the registered cultural heritage of film has enough vale to be used as history and culture & art education material, it suggests an idea on how to utilize it in a class. Ways of its educational utilization has been designed in two parts: secondary educational institutes and public organizations. The utilization in secondary educational institutes can be divided into history education material and culture & art education. Firstly, the utilization as history education material suggests a teaching method to grasping historical context while watching a classic movie. This can be great visual material for high school students, who are learning Korean history, and will be helpful to be an effective history education getting out of the existing cramming system of education. Secondly, as an utilization as culture & art education material, this study recommends an educational methodology which requires students to interpret its value culturally and historically while watching a classic movie relevant to ‘Reading Movies’ curriculum. This can contribute to the variation of teaching method in education of movie, furthermore, it can be a cornerstone of nurturing talents by promoting development of culture & art education. In a case of educational utilization in a public organization, it designs a way to link between registered cultural heritage of film and an on-going educational program for teenagers at Korean Film Archives. Using educational programs run at Korean Film Archives such as <Saturday Culture School – Movie Pharmacy, Mind Therapy> or <The Classing and Imagnation> can make a class more effective and appropriate for a movie program. Unfortunately, there is no educational program for adults which is operated at Korean Film Archive. Thus, it suggests to establish educational program for adults and run support business by using the registered cultural heritage of film. These can be developed by reinterpreting a registered culture heritage of film as a movie or by establishing producing education program which remake a movie as a performance under a concept of ’Remake of Registered Cultural Heritage of Film.’ Also, this study provides an idea to design a support business which encourage for experts in contents to remake the registered cultural heritage of film. It is expected that the educational utilization mentioned above can expand the usage scope of registered cultural heritage of film, which scope of its usage, which used be merely preserved. Futhermore, it will make the value and significance of registered cultural heritage of film widely known. Sharing and enjoying the registered cultural heritage of film with more people by giving new value on it can build system on transmission of modern cultural heritage as well as make people’s life more abundant.

The purpose of this thesis is to draw the aesthetics of the existing Korea’s silent films from their interrelationships with ‘Byeon-sa’, silent-film narrator. That is, this dissertation focuses on analyzing the characteristics of the film aesthetics that can be produced when a film as visual media meet a byeon-sa as auditory media. As we know, silent films were introduced with the name of moving pictures into Chosun Korea from the West around 1900. During the early stage of the influx, for the people of Chosun Korea moving pictures were merely an interesting invention from the West that recorded people's movements and the sight of the world. It required many processes of changes for a moving picture to be recognized by audience as a narrative film that could create a fictional story. Although the structure of film style itself had some sort of system to constitute a narrative, in Chosun Korea especially a film commentary by a byeon-sa was accompanied throughout the first half period of silent film, which had prevailed for nearly 30 years until talkies became common. The fact that a silent film was shown by the interaction between film and a byeon-sa suggests that the study on film aesthetics during Chosun Korea silent-film period was not able to be achieved only by film text-oriented methods. In other words, the aesthetics of the silent film has to be drawn within the field of cinema including the byeon-sa. So in this topic, I attempted to analyze three existing silent films in Chosun Korea based on the perspective that a byeon-sa and a film interact one another in screening, and contributes to the establishment of a cinema as a whole. Here, I tried to breakdown a silent-film into ‘intertitles’ and ‘image shot’ and examined their roles in interacting with a byeon-sa. In a shot composition that is commonly used in the dialogue shot of two movies, The Power Of Sincerity (1935, approx: In the Film, it show 10on the bulletin board promoting tax payment) and A public prosecutor and a teacher (1948), it seems like that the arrangement of image shot-intertitles-image shot are taken by the byeon-sa who is completely aware of the contents of intertitles, and from the start image of the arrangement he performs the characters' dialogues and then the intertitles, linking them to the third image. This brings the effect of recognizing the intertitles frame as attached into the image shot. And also in The Power of Sincerity where the dialogue intertitle sometimes appears prior to characters, a byeon-sa seems to suggest the appearance of drama characters with off-screen sound. In Turning point of the youngsters where intertitles are simplified, we can find an effective directing strategy to reduce interrupting with the intertitles a kind of narrative interaction, or double narratives made between the byeon-sa and the images. In fact, the domestic films at that time with the intertitles appears to be rather chaotic or incoherent only considering in the terms of film texts. It will be, however, a reasonable placement when that orders stand together with byeon-sa’s verbal commentaries. Likewise, though the image style of existing domestic films might appear to have clumsy orders, it can be found that some has a perfect image construction system when taking a byeon-sa’s narration into account, which also can be found in the film, Turning point of the youngsters, 1934. If an action is presented with an overlapped form, a character directly stares at the camera, or the shot that is supposed to be contained in the P.O.V. shot of a character remains let alone, then all these images are felt like incomplete. But if in this case byeon-sa’s commentaries are added, the overlapping editing of an action might be a shot establishment that is intended to earn some time to adjust for a tempo. the front staring with the commentaries then is able to maximize attraction effect. And being added to the byeon-sa's off-screen sound, the point of view shot without getting sutured does not necessarily have to be sutured with the reverse-angle shot of a character. Also the film, a public prosecutor and teacher, shows the structure in which the story development is radically processed in a scene that is filmed by the long-take technique, which has an advantage of developing a scene quickly and efficiently when matched with a byeon-sa’s commentary. And interestingly, the effect of using the same image might be different depending on byeon-sa’s commentaries. Let’s say, in Western silent films a close-up of a person would be called “wordless soliloquy” if we were to quote rhetoric. But in the screening where it is accompanied by a byeon-sa’s commentary the close-up is not only the way of visually expressing a character but the best shot that explains a character’s mental state. So this type of close-up shot which makes a dramatic effect on a film was very preferred in the time of Chosun Korea's silent-film period. In fact, since byeon-sa’s commentaries do not remain in any record, it is almost impossible to confirm what this thesis assume. Nevertheless, the reason this thesis tries to examine the aesthetics of the silent-films utilizing byeon-sa as a parameter is that I wanted to respect the way Korea films existed with audience as a screening practice, as well as to unveil the fact that the style of a film can actually composed by that effect. My intentions is also that the style was the unique film-directing strategy consisting in the cultural conditions of the film screening in Korea, rather than just an aesthetics estimated in terms of the standards of the West.

This dissertation aims to historically study Joseon silent film style during the colonial era. I divide the Joseon silent film era into three periods: the ‘early cinema’ period shows Joseon's responses and practices towards Western moving pictures; in the early silent film period, Joseon cinema sought to develop cinematic styles based on Japanese new school (Shinpa) film and Western films; in the late silent film period, Joseon silent film styles were built, while showing affinity with Japanese films pivoting on Soviet Montage theory instead of Hollywood cinema. These periods are to be examined in light of contexts, discourses and texts. The salient question to be cast in this thesis is how Joseon filmmakers cognized and practiced cinematic styles during each period. Attempting to study comparative study of early Joseon film history with early Japanese film history, I stipulate that Joseon cinema's practice is the production process from a play with Kineorama (電氣應用劇) to a combination play (a cinema and real drama combined, 連鎖劇) around 1919. The key figures who took the lead of this change were Park Seung-pil (朴承弼), the owner of Dan-seong-sa (團成社); Lim Seong-gu (林聖九), the leader of Hyeok-shin-dan (革新團); and Kim Do-san (金陶山), the leader of Shin-keuk-jwa (新劇座). Hyeok-shin-dan and Shin-Keuk-jwa were new school troupes affiliated with Dan-seong-sa. It is apparent that these figures acquired their technology from Japan, which had imported and established various visual attractions from the West. Combination plays and Western serial films were the two most prominent types of shows in theaters for Joseon viewers. Plays with Kineorama and combination plays belong to the preliminary stage of Joseon's filmmaking, before the advent of feature filmmaking; such films were Joseon's reaction to popular Western serial films in theaters for Joseon viewers. The designation of Joseon's combination play as 'Shinpa (new school drama) Combination play' also proves that it was a reaction to Western moving pictures. Joseon's combination play was one of the closest formats to the film among various performances of those plays. It inserted some attractions mimicking Western action film styles and actual images into a combination play, while some actualities were part of one program. Joseon's first cinematography and its context, in which film was combined with performance, can be interpreted as the Western early cinematic style which Tom Gunning called the 'cinema of attraction.' Meanwhile, the elements of action films in combination plays are derived from the effect which Western serial films exerted on Japanese combination plays/new school films. challenge established Korean film history on the beginnings of Joseon silent feature films by re-examining the relationship between Joseon and Japanese filmmakers who worked on the Korean peninsula. Japanese organizations including Hayakawa Koshu (早川孤舟)'s Dong-ah Culture Association and Takasa Kancho (高佐貫長)'s Joseon Kinema Corporation, established in Busan, led the early production of feature films in Joseon. However, Kim Jo-seong (金肇盛) of the Dong-ah Culture Association, and Yoon Baek-nam (尹白南) and Lee Kyung-son (李慶孫) of Joseon Kinema Corporation provided assistance that was as important as Japanese capital and technology. After 1926, Japanese film productions including Joseon Kinema Productions, Deok-young Productions, Daeryuk Kinema Productions and Wonsan Productions which shot at Kyeongseong Studio were the mainstays of silent film productions in Joseon. It is significant that the operation of Joseon cinema was done through Joseon filmmakers' action, competition, and negotiation with and against Japanese capital and technology. The early silent cinema period of Joseon film was the time to discover 'cinematic' film styles and approaches to practice, which can be seen in the film style reviews written by Lee Gu-young, Yoon Gap-yong and others. Joseon cinema well understood the contemporary world film strategy which searched for representability of the film medium. For the mere three years between 1923 and 1926, Joseon silent films embraced early cinematic practices such as the 'tableau shot' and even French impressionist styles including the 'flash' and 'close-up.' It is apparent from the advertisement of Arirang in Kinema Junpo on December 11, 1926 that Joseon silent films were textured with several influences including Japanese new school films, which in turn had taken from Western films, American action films, and European art cinema. Katyusha, 'a film within a film (劇中劇)' shown in this advertisement proves that Arirang was positioned within the sphere of influence of the new school film genre; the new school film genre means Japanese films with unique characteristics which was influenced by Western cinema. Moreover, Son of the Sheik the advertisement mentions was analyzed that Arirang was directly influenced by Western films such as American action films and European art cinema. This also symbolizes the two properties of tragedy and action in the Japanese/Joseon shinpa film genre. A study of the linkage between Joseon and Japanese films leads to the probing of second generation filmmakers who experienced and learned at Japanese studios in the early and middle 1930s. Existing Korean film history tells that the second generation filmmakers, including Joseon filmmakers experiencing in Japan, tried to unite film production companies as a corporation and took the lead the sphere of Joseon talkie films, but that they were integrated into the war basis during the late Japanese colonial period. This dissertation restores the activities of Joseon filmmakers learning in Japan, including Lee Kyu-hwan, Bang Han-joon, Park Gi-chae and Shin Kyeong-kyun, especially at film studios in Kyoto from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. It can also be seen that their activities were connected with Joseon’s silent film from the age of its maturity. Based on their actual experience and acquisition of directing approaches from Japanese studios, the second generation filmmakers led the style discourse in the Joseon film scene during the early and middle 1930s. The importance of 'continuity,' they argued, was connected to the montage discourse they practiced and perceived as a Joseon silent film grammar. They were the most valuable asset of the industry which could not construct its own studio system, since the Joseon film scene should overcome a poor production environment only with them. Through the acquisition and settlement of a cinematic grammar, the Joseon silent film style in the mid-1930s was built in accordance with Joseon's film industry and technological environment. The screenplays and shooting scripts (continuities) at that time demonstrate that Joseon cinema used and translated Western filmmaking terminology from Japan, which is similar to that of contemporary films. The directing terminology in Joseon’s screenplays is evidence for understanding Joseon cinematic grammar and visual styles. By analyzing the screenplays of Joseon silent films and the film texts including Turning Point of the Youngsters in 1934, I argue that Joseon films partly borrowed classical Hollywood cinema styles, but were also interested in the aesthetics of individual shots and connections among them through the sense of montage, rather than in Hollywood decoupage which practices an analytic approach to space. This shows that the Joseon silent film entered the stage of 'cinematic' film in its own way, which is a consequence of its wide selection of styles including Hollywood cinema, European art cinema, and Japanese cinema. The Joseon silent film is located in the field of various practices of ‘the crestline films’ which Noel Burch mentioned. Especially, as a result of a comparative analysis of Joseon silent films with Japanese silent films, I find common ground of Joseon and Japanese silent films in that they used part of classical Hollywood film styles. As seen in the Joseon talkie Shim Cheong in 1937, Joseon film styles were constructed and superimposed on various levels: the modes of world film styles, the technological environment of Joseon cinema, Joseon’s industrial logics, and the way of speaking to a Joseon audience.
