        Aggregation mechanism of bovine serum albumin based on collision factor by the population balance conservation law

        This paper discusses a novel approach for exploring the aggregation mechanism of bovine serum albumin using collision factor. The population balance equation consisting of aggregation term was developed and solved by the moment method. Different experiments were implemented to account for effective parameters on protein aggregation and to measure variations in average size of aggregates formed in a time interval. This was done by taking pictures with a CCD camera on a sterio microscope. The pictures were exported to image processing software to analyze average number and size of aggregates. The collision factor appearing in population balance equation was optimized and declared as a global term.

      • Expression of DDR1 and DVL1 in Invasive Ductal and Lobular Breast Carcinoma does not Correlate with Histological Type, Grade and Hormone Receptor Status

        Background: Invasive ductal (IDC) and lobular (ILC) carcinomas are the common histological types of breast carcinoma which are difficult to distinguish when poorly differentiated. Discoidin domain receptor (DDR1) and Drosophila dishevelled protein (DVL1) were recently suggested to differentiate IDC from ILC. Objectives: To assess the expression of DDR1 and DVL1 and their association with histological type, grading and hormonal status of IDC and ILC. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on IDC and ILC breast tumours. Tumours were immunohistochemically stained for (DDR1) and (DVL1) as well as estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and C-erbB2 receptor. Demographic data including age and ethnicity were obtained from patient records. Results: A total of 51 cases (30 IDCs and 21 ILCs) were assessed. DDR1 and DVL1 expression was not significantly associated with histological type (p=0.57 and p=0.66 respectively). There was no association between DDR1 and DVL1 expression and tumour grade (p=0.32 and p=1.00 respectively), ER (p=0.62 and 0.50 respectively), PR (p=0.38 and p=0.63 respectively) and C-erbB2 expression (p=0.19 and p=0.33 respectively) in IDC. There was no association between DDR1 and DVL1 expression and tumour grade (p=0.52 and p=0.33 respectively), ER (p=0.06 and p=0.76 respectively), PR (p=0.61 and p=0.43 respectively) and C-erbB2 expression (p=0.58 and p=0.76 respectively) in ILC. Conclusions: This study revealed that DDR1 and DVL1 are present in both IDC and ILC regardless of the tumour differentiation. More studies are needed to assess the potential of these two proteins in distinguishing IDC from ILC in breast tumours.

        Influence of Wax Lubrication on Cutting Performance of Single-Crystal Silicon in Ultraprecision Microgrooving

        Lubrication can improve the tool-workpiece interface condition in ultraprecision machining, especially in microgrooving processes. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of dry, liquid (cutting oil), solid (wax) and hybrid (cutting oil and wax) lubrication conditions, on the creation of arc-sectioned microgrooves on single-crystal silicon wafers using a singlecrystal diamond tool. Micro cutting forces, chip morphology, and surface quality at different locations of the grooves were investigated. Rose-shaped continuous chips were observed in dry cutting, indicating stable ductile mode material removal. The entrance side of the groove was always smoother than the exit side with a higher degree of phase transformation. Chip adhesions on the tool edge were found in dry and oil lubricated cutting, whereas wax coating could prevent the adhesion. Wax coating played the dual roles of a chip breaker as well as a high-performance lubricant, thus improved the surface integrity. This study demonstrated the capability of using wax coating as an environmentally friendly solid lubricant for microgrooving of single-crystal silicon and possibly for other hard brittle materials.

        Review Article : The Attenuation of Pain Behavior and Serum COX-2 Concentration by Curcumin in a Rat Model of Neuropathic Pain

        Background: Neuropathic pain is generally defined as a chronic pain state resulting from peripheral and/or central nerve injury. There is a lack of effective treatment for neuropathic pain, which may possibly be related to poor understanding of pathological mechanisms at the molecular level. Curcumin, a therapeutic herbal extract, has shown to be effectively capable of reducing chronic pain induced by peripheral administration of inflammatory agents such as formalin. In this study, we aimed to show the effect of curcumin on pain behavior and serum COX-2 level in a Chronic Constriction Injury (CCI) model of neuropathic pain. Methods: Wistar male rats (150-200 g, n = 8) were divided into three groups: CCI vehicle-treated, sham-operated, and CCI drug-treated group. Curcumin (12.5, 25, 50 mg/kg, IP) was injected 24 h before surgery and continued daily for 7 days post-surgery. Behavioral tests were performed once before and following the days 1, 3, 5, 7 after surgery. The serum COX-2 level was measured on day 7 after the surgery. Results: Curcumin (50 mg/kg) decreased mechanical and cold allodynia (P < 0.001) and produced a decline in serum COX-2 level (P < 0.001). Conclusions: A considerable decline in pain behavior and serum COX-2 levels was seen in rat following administration of curcumin in CCI model of neuropathic pain. High concentration of Curcumin was able to reduce the chronic neuropathic pain induced by CCI model and the serum level of COX-2.

        A Multi-Objective Decision Approach for Optimal Augmentation and Expansion of Transmission Network

        In this paper, the authors propose a new multi-objective decision making approach for optimal augmentation and expansion of transmission network. Fundamental elements of the proposed ap-proach are value of reliability and electricity market. Investment Cost (IC), Total Congestion Cost (TCOC) and Social Welfare (SW) and also Average Load Interruption Cost (ALIC) are the four objec-tives considered in the optimization, while short-term and long-term constraints, are modeled as con-straints. The proposed model is one of complicated non-convex optimization problem having a non-linear, mixed-integer nature. Therefore, a new and robust hybrid Improved Harmony Search Algorithm (IHSA) and Quadratic Programming (QP) is used and followed by a Fuzzy Satisfying Method (FSM) to determine the final optimal solution. The feasibility and capabilities of the proposed approach are tested on the 6-machine 8-bus test system. The detailed results of the case studies are presented and thoroughly analyzed. The obtained results illustrate the sufficiency and profitableness of the newly de-veloped method in augmentation and expansion of transmission network when, compared with other methods.

        Comparison of the effects of target-controlled infusion-remifentanil/midazolam and manual fentanyl/midazolam administration on patient parameters in dental procedures

        Background: Moderate sedation is an integral part of dental care delivery. Target-controlled infusion (TCI) has the potential to improve patient safety and outcome. We compared the effects of using TCI to administer remifentanil/manual bolus midazolam with manual bolus fentanyl/midazolam administration on patient safety parameters, drug administration times, and patient recovery times. Methods: In this retrospective chart review, records of patients who underwent moderate intravenous sedation over 12 months in a private dental clinic were assessed. Patient indicators (pre-, intra-, and post-procedure noninvasive systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate) were compared using independent t-test analysis. Patient recovery time, procedure length, and midazolam dosage required were also compared between the two groups. Results: Eighty-five patient charts were included in the final analysis: 47 received TCI-remifentanil/midazolam sedation, and 38 received manual fentanyl/midazolam sedation. Among the physiological parameters, diastolic blood pressure showed slightly higher changes in the fentanyl group (P = 0.049), respiratory rate changes showed higher changes in the fentanyl group (P = 0.032), and the average EtCO2 was slightly higher in the remifentanil group (P = 0.041). There was no significant difference in the minimum SpO2 levels and average procedure length between the fentanyl and remifentanil TCI pump groups (P > 0.05). However, a significant difference was observed in the time required for discharge from the chair (P = 0.048), indicating that patients who received remifentanil required less time for discharge from the chair than those who received fentanyl. The dosage of midazolam used in the fentanyl group was 0.487 mg more than that in the remifentanil group; however, the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of TCI administered remifentanil combined with manual administered midazolam has the potential to shorten the recovery time and reduce respiration rate changes when compared to manual administration of fentanyl/midazolam. This is possibly due to either the lower midazolam dosage required with TCI remifentanil administration or achieving a stable, steady-state low dose remifentanil concentration for the duration of the procedure.

        Retinopathy of Prematurity-assist: Novel Software for Detecting Plus Disease

        Purpose: To design software with a novel algorithm, which analyzes the tortuosity and vascular dilatation infundal images of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) patients with an acceptable accuracy for detecting plus disease. Methods: Eighty-seven well-focused fundal images taken with RetCam were classified to three groups of plus,non-plus, and pre-plus by agreement between three ROP experts. Automated algorithms in this study weredesigned based on two methods: the curvature measure and distance transform for assessment of tortuosityand vascular dilatation, respectively as two major parameters of plus disease detection. Results: Thirty-eight plus, 12 pre-plus, and 37 non-plus images, which were classified by three experts, weretested by an automated algorithm and software evaluated the correct grouping of images in comparison toexpert voting with three different classifiers, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine and multilayer perceptronnetwork. The plus, pre-plus, and non-plus images were analyzed with 72.3%, 83.7%, and 84.4%accuracy, respectively. Conclusions: The new automated algorithm used in this pilot scheme for diagnosis and screening of patientswith plus ROP has acceptable accuracy. With more improvements, it may become particularly useful, especiallyin centers without a skilled person in the ROP field.
