Background: Post-stroke shoulder-hand syndrome (SHS) is a common complication after stroke. To date, there is still a lack of consistently effective and good patient compliance methods for SHS. Methods: Fifty patients with SHS were included in this study. Patients in the control group received rehabilitation training (RT) for 2 weeks; each session was 30 min, 1 time per day, and 5 times per week. Patients in the observation group were additionally given Bo’s abdominal acupuncture (BAA) with the same frequency and duration. The primary outcome was the change value in the VAS score from baseline to 2 weeks. The secondary outcomes measured were motor function of the upper limb, shoulder range of motion, ADL, and swelling volume. Results: Compared with baseline values, the mean VAS score at 2 weeks was reduced by 3.68 in the observation group and by 1.92 in the control group, with a difference between the two groups of 1.84 (P < 0.001); the mean MBI score at 2 weeks increased by 10.44 in the observation group and by 4.79 in the control group, with a difference between the two groups of 5.84 (P = 0.032); the mean swelling volume at 2 weeks decreased by 9.64 in the observation group and by 3.29 in the control group, with a difference between the two groups of 6.48 (P < 0.001). BAA-related adverse events were not found during the study. Conclusions: BAA combined with RT is superior to RT alone in improving shoulder pain, swelling, and ADL in post-stroke SHS patients. Electroencephalography (EEG) is another interesting bio-electrical signal to differ from EMG (Electromyography). In order to pursue its application in the control of the multi-fingered robot hand or the prosthetic hand, the pattern recognition technology of the human hand activities based on EEG should be investigated as a very important and elementary research objective at first. After discussing our research strategy about EEG applied in the control of the robot hand, the recognition model named as Fuzzy Neural Network (FNN) is set up in this paper, and then its related algorithms, such as the fundamental knowledge produced, the learning samples set, the features extracted, and the patterns recognized with the artificial neural network (ANN), are deeply discussed for achieving the classification of some basic mental tasks. In addition, the experimental research has also been done using a twochannel system of measuring EEG signal, and the result shows the new recognition model using FNN can extract not only the effective spectral features of the hand movements and the other usual accompanying mental tasks, such as blinking eyes, watching red color and listening music, so as to achieve the fundamental knowledge production and the feature extraction, but also has the good capability of the pattern recognition about the human hand activities through the fuzzy setting of the learning samples and the training of its ANN.

Objective: To prospectively evaluate the efficacy of lauromacrogol injection for ablation (LIA) of benign predominantly cystic thyroid nodules and its related factors. Materials and Methods: A total of 142 benign predominantly cystic thyroid nodules (median volume, 12.5 mL; range, 0.4– 156 mL) in 137 patients (male:female sex ratio, 36:101; mean age ± standard deviation [SD], 49 ± 13 years) were treated with LIA after being confirmed as benign via cytology. The volume reduction rate (VRR) of the nodules and cosmetic score were evaluated during follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment and every 6 months thereafter. A VRR of ≥ 50% at the 12-month follow-up was considered to indicate effective treatment. The associations between the clinical factors and nodular ultrasound features, including the initial nodule volume, proportion of solid components, vascularity grade and ineffective treatment (VRR of < 50% at the 12-month follow-up), and regrowth were analyzed. Results: All patients completed follow-up for at least 12 months. The average ± SD follow-up period was 32 ± 11 months (range, 12–54 months). The effective treatment rate was 73.2% (104/142), while the regrowth rate was 12.0% (17/142) at the last follow-up. Grade 2–3 intranodular vascularity in the solid components of the nodules was the only independent factor associated with ineffective treatment, with an odds ratio (reference category, grade 0–1) of 3.054 (95% confidence interval, 1.148–8.127) (p = 0.025). Conclusion: LIA is an effective treatment for predominantly cystic thyroid nodules. Grade 2–3 intranodular vascularity in the solid components of nodules is the only independent risk factor for ineffective LIA.

A melt treatment with a vibrating cooling slope and a semisolid rolling process to produce an AZ61 alloy strip was proposed. The microstructure formation mechanism and the properties of the AZ61 alloy produced by the proposed process were investigated. Due to the high cooling rate and stirring action caused by the vibration cooling slope, the nucleation rate was greatly improved, which caused the formation of fine spherical or rosette primary grains. During the rolling process, the solid fraction increased from the entrance to the exit of the roll gap, and under the shearing action of the roller, the distribution of solute in the melt was homogenous, and the primary grains grew further. When the casting temperature was 680 °C,a strip with a cross section of 4 mm×160 mm was produced and a homogeneous microstructure was obtained. The ultimate tensile strength of the AZ61 alloy strip produced by the proposed method reached 242 MPa, and the corresponding elongation to failure was 4%, which were better than those achieved in previous similar studies.

The temperature and pH stability of proteases have been extensively investigated. A neutral protease produced by Aspergillus oryzae was thermodynamically characterized at high-salt environment. When the protease was tested at 24% NaCl and 60oC, its half-life was increased to 30.0 min, 111% longer than that of control. Its Gibbs free energy and activation energy for denaturation in high NaCl concentration solutions were higher than in low salt solutions and increased by 2.1 and 4.75 kJ/mol,respectively. The protease exhibited higher thermal stability in higher salt conditions. This feature is beneficial to soybean sauce fermentation by enhancing the protease performance and taste of the product. Analysis by farultraviolet circular dichroism (far-UV CD) spectroscopy revealed that α-helix conformation in the protease increased from 3.2 to 31.7%, respectively, when the NaCl concentration increased from 0 to 18%, in agreement with the results deduced by thermodynamic calculations.

The bolted connections with slotted-in steel plates are basic beam-to-column connections of modern post-and-beam timber building structures. However, due to significantly pinched rotational behaviors, the moment resistance of such connections are usually ignored in design. In this study, the connection-level moment resistance is enabled for modern glulam frame structures with an innovative connection design. A pair of long steel rods with screwheads is designed to generate a force couple at the sides of the connection. The proposed connection could be considered as the key lateral force resisting component, indicating a significant reduction of lateral braces and shear walls. Specimens of the target connection were carefully designed and tested in the lab to obtain their mechanical properties and failure modes. Finite element models were established and calibrated according to the tested data. The moment-rotation curves of the new connection could be easily estimated through a fitted formula. Moreover, the suggestions to improve the proposed connection is also discussed based on the observed damage modes. Results show that the new connection could be treated as rigid moment-resisting connections while the ductility could be further improved.
