        Antioxidant Activity of Salad Vegetables Grown in Korea

        The antioxidant activity of forty two kinds of salad vegetables grown in Korea was evaluated. Methanol extract of freeze-dried vegetable was assayed by radical scavenging activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Fe^(2+)-catalyzed lipid peroxidation inhibition by TBA method. Total phenolics were determined colorimetrically using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The highest radical scavenging activity was expressed by perilla leaf, followed by dandelion leaf, red and green leafy lettuce, of which IC50 was less than 0.10 mg/mL. Angelica leaf showed the highest inhibitory action for lipid peroxidation with 95%, and then dandelion leaf, water spinach, and perilla leaf inhibited over 80%. However, lettuce (Iceberg) and young Chinese cabbage exhibited the lowest antioxidant activity based on both assay methods. Highly positive correlations between antioxidative activities and total phenolics were observed (p<0.001). The results suggested that salad vegetables, especially perilla leaf, leafy lettuce, dandelion or angelica, could be used for easily accessible sources of natural antioxidants.

      • STUDIES ON SIDESTREAM BIOLOGICAL PHOSPHOROUS REMOVAL PROCESS BY DOSING FERMENTATION LIQUOR

        A sidesteam bio-P removal laboratory scale test unit was carried out to study the possibility of dosing the acid fermentation liquor of primary sludge, excess sludge, mixture of digested sludge with sewage, raw wastewater as substrates for P release into anaerobic P stripper. The results show that the fermentation liquor which contain readily biodegradable substance could be used for bio-P removal. When the retention time in anaerobic P stripper were decreased to 2-6 hours, the P release was stills satisfied. It is possible to keep a higher readily biodegradable COD concentration' in anaerobic stripper because P release is carried out, in more concentrated form, in a small sidestream, when the liquor were added into the stripper. Therefore, not only NO^(-)_(x)-N trouble could be redused, but also P release accelerated.

        Performance of a hydrofoil operating close to a free surface over a range of angles of attack

        Performance of a NACA 634-021 hydrofoil in motion under and in close proximity of a free surface for a large range of angles of attack is studied. Lift and drag coefficients of the hydrofoil at different submergence depths are investigated both numerically and experimentally, for 0 AoA30 at a Reynolds number of 105. The results of the numerical study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The agreement confirms the new finding that for a submerged hydrofoil operating at high angles of attack close to a free surface, the interaction between the hydrofoil-motion induced waves on the free surface and the hydrofoil results in mitigation of the flow separation characteristics on the suction side of the foil and delay in stall, and improvement in hydrofoil performance. In comparing with a baseline case, results suggest a 55% increase in maximum lift coefficient and 90% average improvement in performance for, based on the lift-to-drag ratio, but it is also observed significant decrease of lift-to-drag ratio at lower angles of attack. Flow details obtained from combined finite volume and volume of fluid numerical methods provide insight into the underlying enhancement mechanism, involving interaction between the hydrofoil and the free surface.

        An efficient Video Dehazing Algorithm Based on Spectral Clustering

        Image and video dehazing is a popular topic in the field of computer vision and digital image processing. A fast, optimized dehazing algorithm was recently proposed that enhances contrast and reduces flickering artifacts in a dehazed video sequence by minimizing a cost function that makes transmission values spatially and temporally coherent. However, its fixed-size block partitioning leads to block effects. The temporal cost function also suffers from the temporal non-coherence of newly appearing objects in a scene. Further, the weak edges in a hazy image are not addressed. Hence, a video dehazing algorithm based on well designed spectral clustering is proposed. To avoid block artifacts, the spectral clustering is customized to segment static scenes to ensure the same target has the same transmission value. Assuming that edge images dehazed with optimized transmission values have richer detail than before restoration, an edge intensity function is added to the spatial consistency cost model. Atmospheric light is estimated using a modified quadtree search. Different temporal transmission models are established for newly appearing objects, static backgrounds, and moving objects. The experimental results demonstrate that the new method provides higher dehazing quality and lower time complexity than the previous technique.

        Time Scale Modification refers to the process of compressing or expanding the time-scale of an audio segment. A signal which is time-scale compressed has a shorter duration, while a time-scale expanded signal is longer in duration. Simply speeding up the playback rate of a digital signal resampling causes the local pitch periods to be shortened. A signal created in this way has a shorter time-scale, but is largely unintelligible. A properly time-scale modified signal maintains properties of the original signal shch as local pitch period, speaker identity, and intelligibility. It does so by preserving the prominent features of the signal associated with these properties, namely the local pitch period. When this is performed on a voice signal, the resulting signal sounds as though the same person is talking faster or slower in the same voice. Pitch detection is used by autocorrelation using signal only. This is synthesized using PSOLA method. It shows good quality from 8khz to 22.05khz sampling rate regardless of speaker's sex or age.

        Investigation of surface-piercing fixed structures with different shapes for Bragg reflection of water waves

        Bragg reflection of water waves by three kinds of surface-piercing fixed structures with rectangular, cosinoidal and triangular shapes is studied. Boundary element method is used to analyze the wave scattering by these structures based on the linear wave theory. Results of reflection and transmission coefficients are validated by comparing with those available in literature. These structures with proper configurations are proved to be effective in attenuating waves by using Bragg reflection, and the triangular structures are found to be the best choices among the structures with same width and same area. Systematic calculations are then carried out for the triangular structures by varying the number, the draft, the width, the gap and the combination of width and gap of the structures to analyze their influences on the characteristics of Bragg reflection. The results are of reference values for design of the structures to attenuate waves based on the Bragg reflection.
