Functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are common gastrointestinal (GI) diseases; however, there is frequent overlap between FD and IBS patients. Emerging evidence links the activation of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) receptors with stress-related alterations of gastric and colonic motor function. Therefore, we investigated the effect of peripheral CRF peptide and water avoidance stress (WAS) on upper and lower GI transit in guinea pigs. Dosages 1, 3, and 10 μg/kg of CRF were injected intraperitoneally(IP) in fasted guinea pigs 30 minutes prior to the intragastric administration of charcoal mix to measure upper GI transit. Colonic transits in non-fasted guinea pigs were assessed by fecal pellet output assay after above IP CRF doses. Blockade of CRF receptorsby Astressin, and its effect on GI transit was also analyzed. Guinea pigs were subjected to WAS to measure gastrocolonic transit in different sets of experiments. Dose 10 μg/kg of CRF significantly inhibited upper GI transit. In contrast, there was dose dependentacceleration of the colonic transit. Remarkably, pretreatment of astressin significantly reverses the effect of CRF peptide on GI transit. WAS significantly increase colonic transit, but failed to accelerate upper GI transit. Peripheral CRF peptide significantly suppressed upper GI transit and accelerated colon transit, while central CRF involved WAS stimulated only colonic transit. Therefore, peripheral CRF could be utilized to establish the animal model of overlap syndrome.
Performance evaluation of loop-type ground radiation antenna based on its optimum impedance level
Zahid, Z.,Kim, H. IET 2017 Electronics letters Vol.53 No.7
<P>The performance of a loop-type ground radiation antenna was analysed based on its impedance level for an arbitrary location on the ground plane. At the corner of the ground plane, the open capacitor configuration (i.e. the PIFA type antenna) shows better performance, whereas the loop-type antenna with a capacitor and shorted inductor is a better choice at the middle of the ground plane. The optimum value of the impedance level of the antenna determines the antenna performance for an arbitrary location on the ground plane is proposed. The idea was demonstrated using a 10 x 4.5 mm loop-type antenna, which was fabricated on the 50 x 25 mm ground plane. The design is intended for mobile device applications operating in the Bluetooth band.</P>
Caspase-11, the Main Executioner in Non-canonical Inflammasome
Zahid Manzoor,Young-Sang Koh 대한미생물학회 2012 Journal of Bacteriology and Virology Vol.42 No.2
Murine caspase-11 is orthologus to human caspase-4 and caspase-5, and is required for the response to cholera toxin B and infection with Escherichia coli, Citrobacter rodentium or Vibrio cholerae. Caspase-11 rather than caspase-1 is the main offender involved in sepsis. Hence, caspase-11 plays an essential pro-inflammatory role in innate immune response to bacterial infections.
Design and Operation Strategy of CO2 Terminal
Zahid, Umer,An, Jinjoo,Lee, Chul-Jin,Lee, Ung,Han, Chonghun American Chemical Society 2015 INDUSTRIAL & ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY RESEARCH - Vol.54 No.8
<P>With recent advancements in the carbon capture and storage (CCS), much interest has been developed in the CO2 transport options. An infrastructure including pipelines, ships, tanker truck, and railways will be collectively required for a large scale CO2 transport network. In particular, ship transportation can play a special role in the early phase of CCS infrastructure development as it offers flexible routes between source and offshore storage sites. This work is focused on the design and operational strategy of the CO2 terminal which acts as a connecting link between CO2 liquefaction and the shipping section. The study is performed using dynamic simulation in order to have a more realistic understanding of the process. Four scenarios have been developed to define the operational strategy of the terminal: loading case, holding case, unloading case, and emergency shutdown. A reasonable equipment sizing has been done after consultation with vendors data and available literature. The heat influxes to storage tanks include the heat leak from the bottom surface, dry wall, and wet wall for the precise quantification of heat flow across the system. Reasonable control loops are appended to keep the process variables at their set points to allow the safe operation of the CO2 terminal within the operational limits. Finally, a sensitivity analysis has been performed on some of the important design variables in order to understand their effect on the process performance and terminal operation. The results show that boil-off gas (BOG) generation within the CO2 terminal depends on storage tank size, operating pressure, ambient conditions, insulation thickness, and the filling level of the vessel.</P>
