The Beopgwangsa Temple site in Pohang, Korea, is known as a memorial temple of the royal family of Silla, related to Kim Gyun-jeong, who was the father of King Sinmu, 45th monarch of the Korean kingdom of Silla (reigned in 839). Bihaksan Mountain where Beopgwangsa Temple was located was a place of military strategic importance for local defense, and small-scale national ancestral rites were held at the temple. The temple was in the vicinity of Wanggyeongbukro Road, a major route of Silla, which began from the capital city Gyeongju, passed Angang River in the north and Myeongju along the east coast and reached the northern border. It appears that the reason Beopgwangsa Temple, a memorial temple of the royal family, was built in a local area not in the capital city, is related to the geographical importance. It can be also assumed that Kim Gyun-jeong’s family had connections in the area of Singwang-myeon, Pohang, where the Beopgwangsa Temple site is located from the record that a tablet was given by a king to Seongjusa Temple, Boryeong, the base of descendants of Kim Ju-won, who belonged to the group of King Muyeol during the reign of King Munseong. When Beopgwangsa Temple was rebuilt, an embankment was built to create a flat site on which the main building of the temple would be placed and a large-scale civil work was carried out to establish a drainage system suitable for the terrain in an effort to overcome the spatial restrictions of the mountainous area. It appears that a three-story stone pagoda was relocated as part of the rebuilding of the temple. The Buddha statue enshrined in the main building of the temple is assumed to be a Vairocana Buddha statute made in the 9th century. Vairocana Buddha is a law-body Buddha that embodies light and bright future, and Vairocana Buddha statutes were created to pray for the repose of ancestors and their rebirth in the Land of Happiness.

Hybrid systems of nanoparticles and polymers have emerged as a new material in the biomedical fi eld. To date, various kindsof hybrid systems have been introduced and applied to drug delivery, regenerative medicine, therapeutics, disease diagnosis, and medical implantation. Among them, the hybridization of nanostructured porous silicon nanoparticles (pSiNPs) and biocompatiblepolymers has been highlighted due to its unique biological and physicochemical properties. This review focuseson the recent advances in the hybrid systems of pSiNPs and biocompatible polymers from an engineering aspect and itsbiomedical applications. Representative hybrid formulations, (i) Polymer-coated pSiNPs, (ii) pSiNPs-embedded polymericnanofi bers, are outlined along with their preparation methods, biomedical applications, and future perspectives. We believethis review provides insight into a new hybrid system of pSiNPs and biocompatible polymers as a promising nano-platformfor further biomedical applications. Recently developed and representative hybrid systems of porous silicon nanoparticles and biocompatible polymers and theirbiomedical applications are introduced.

We investigated the transport and photovoltaic properties of Cu(In1-xGax)Se2 (CIGS) thin-film solar cells. The shunt-current-eliminated diode current could be obtained from the currentevoltage characteristics by subtracting the parasitic shunt leakage current from the total current. The temperature dependence of the open-circuit voltage, extracted from the shunt-eliminated (total) current, suggested that the recombination activation energy is comparable to (much less than) the CIGS bandgap. The lowtemperature characteristics of the diode ideality factor supported bulk-dominated recombination in the same cell. This suggests that shunt-current subtraction can provide the proper diode parameters of CIGS solar cells.
