CYP1A1 Genetic Polymorphisms and Risk for Esophageal Cancer: a Case-control Study in Central China
Yun, Yu-Xia,Wang, Yan-Ping,Wang, Peng,Cui, Li-Hong,Wang, Kai-Juan,Zhang, Jian-Ying,Dai, Li-Ping Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.11
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the associations of CYP1A1 genetic polymorphisms with the risk of developing esophageal cancer (EC). A case-control study was carried out in a Chinese population in which 157 hospital based EC cases and 157 population based healthy controls with 1:1 match by age and sex were included. PCR based restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP) were used to detect genotypes in case and control groups. For the CYP1A1 Ile/Val polymorphism, comparing with wild genotype Ile/Ile, both the heterozygote genotype Ile/Val and the combined variant genotype Ile/Val+Val/Val increased the risk of esophageal cancer (OR: 2.05, 95%CI: 1.19-3.54, OR: 1.86, 95%CI: 1.11-3.12). No significant association was found between the CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism and EC. According to analysis of combined genotypes, the TC/AG combined genotype which contained both variant alleles of these two polymorphisms increased the risk of developing EC (OR: 2.12, 95%CI: 1.16-3.85). Our results suggested that genetic polymorphisms of CYP1A1 may increase the susceptibility to EC.

In this paper, the feasibility of using a one-temperature model to determine plasma’s temperatureby measuring its refractive index is studied based on the consideration that many plasma flow fieldsare not in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We compare the refractive indices between theone- and the two-temperature models of an arc plasma, in order to discuss the applicability ofthe one-temperature model in optical diagnosis. We found that the applicability is determined bythe pressure, the temperature ratio between electrons and heavy particles, the probe wavelength, and the chosen optical method’s refractive index measurement precision. Consequently, a commonmodel is deduced to describe the refractive index of plasma whether it be in LTE or not. In a word, this study is crucial to better apply optical methods based on measurements of the refractive indexto diagnose plasma flow fields.
Partial Purification and Characterization of a Glycoprotein Factor from Fresh Ginseng
Kong, Yun-Cheung,Fong, Wing-Ping,Song, Myung-Eun,Ng, Kam-Hung,Ho, Dan-Dan,Ng, Ping-Chung The Korean Society of Ginseng 1990 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.14 No.2
The aqueous extract of fresh ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) contains a macromolecular fraction that showed mitogenic and co-mitogenic activities in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Purification of the crude extract by size (ultrafiltration, Sephadex G-200) and charge (DEAE-cellulose, DEAE-Sepharose) yielded a semi.purified fraction (DS-3). This fraction contains at least three subgroups of anionic macromolecules with apparent molecular weight greater than 600 kilodaltons. It is a glycoprotein with a large amount of glucuronic acid. It acts as a mitogen in both T and B cells of human peripheral blood lymphocytes. It could also potentiate the mitogenic action of Concanavalin A in lymphocyte T cells. Such potentiation is not due to increased binding of Concanavalin A to the cell surface. Its mitogenic and co-mitogenic effects do depend on the presence of extracellular Ca2+.
Roles of microRNA-206 in Osteosarcoma Pathogenesis and Progression
Bao, Yun-Ping,Yi, Yang,Peng, Li-Lin,Fang, Jing,Liu, Ke-Bin,Li, Wu-Zhou,Luo, Hua-Song Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6
Backgroud and Aims: MicroRNA-206 has proven to be down-regulated in many human malignancies in correlation with tumour progression. Our study aimed to characterize miR-206 contributions to initiation and malignant progression of human osteosarcoma. Methods: MiR-206 expression was detected in human osteosarcoma cell 1ine MG63, human normal osteoblastic cell line hFOB 1.19, and paired osteosarcoma and normal adjacent tissues from 65 patients using quantitative RT-PCR. Relationships of miR-206 levels to clinicopathological characteristics were also investigated. Moreover, miR-206 mimics and negative control siRNA were transfected into MG63 cells to observe effects on cell viability, apoptosis, invasion and migration. Results: We found that miR-206 was down-regulated in the osteosarcoma cell line MG63 and primary tumor samples, and decreased miR-206 expression was significantly associated with advanced clinical stage, T classification, metastasis and poor histological differentiation. Additionally, transfection of miR-206 mimics could reduce MG-63 cell viability, promote cell apoptosis, and inhibit cell invasion and migration. Conclusions: These findings indicate that miR-206 may have a key role in osteosarcoma pathogenesis and development. It could serve as a useful biomarker for prediction of osteosarcoma progression, and provide a potential target for gene therapy.

This paper studies the aerodynamic stability of a tensioned, geometrically nonlinear orthotropic membrane structure with hyperbolic paraboloid in sag direction. Considering flow separation, the wind field around membrane structure is simulated as the superposition of a uniform flow and a continuous vortex layer. By the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics, aerodynamic pressure acting on membrane surface can be determined. And based on the large amplitude theory of membrane and D'Alembert's principle, interaction governing equations of wind-structure are established. Then, under the circumstance of single-mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction governing equations into a system of second-order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the frequency characteristic of the system characteristic equation, the critical velocity of divergence instability is determined. Different parameter analysis shows that the orthotropy, geometrical nonlinearity and scantling of structure is significant for preventing destructive aerodynamic instability in membrane structures. Compared to the model without considering flow separation, it's basically consistent about the divergence instability regularities in the flow separation model.
Coordinated Control of TCSC and SVC for System Damping Enhancement
Ping Lam So,Yun Chung Chu,Tao Yu 대한전기학회 2005 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.3 No.2
This paper proposes a combination of the Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) installation for enhancing the damping performance of a power system. The developed scheme employs a damping controller which coordinates measurement signals with control signals to control the TCSC and SVC. The coordinated control method is based on the application of projective controls. Controller performance over a range of operating conditions is investigated through simulation studies on a single-machine infinite-bus power system. The linear analysis and nonlinear simulation results show that the proposed controller can significantly improve the damping performance of the power system and hence, increase its power transfer capabilities. In this paper, a current injection model of TCSC is developed and incorporated in the transmission system model. By using equivalent injected currents at terminal buses to simulate a TCSC no modification of the bus admittance matrix is required at each iteration.
