Investigation of Demographic Factors in Construction Employees’ Safety Perceptions

        Yu Han,Ruoyu Jin,Hannah Wood,Tong Yang 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.7

This study focused on the effects of these demographic factors on construction employees’ safety perceptions. It first initiated a theoretical framework illustrating the impacts of demographic factors (i.e., education level, gender, and age) on employee’s perceptions towards pre-defined site hazards as well as their general safety perception. Then site questionnaire survey approach was adopted in nine construction jobsites in southeastern China followed by statistical analysis. The study revealed that construction employees’ education level, although not affecting their perceptions towards safety hazards/accidents, could create differences in other general safety perceptions between management staff and workers. Gender differences were found in safety perceptions of hazard/accident scenes and general safety perceptions, indicating that gender issue in safety perceptions applied consistently crossing different industries. Employees between 37 and 46 years old tended to underestimate safety risks from commonly encountered hazards, suggesting the needs of continued safety refreshers for employees in the middle of their career. This study contributed to the body of knowledge in safety perceptions by investigating the effect of three major subgroup or demographic factors, including education level, gender, and age, which had not been sufficiently addressed in construction safety subculture or sub-climate.

Pt, Ag and Au Nanoparticles on hollow carbon spheres as cathode ORR

        Yuhan Jiang,Linlin Guan,Yangjing Jiao,Chunxin Yu,Fang Zhao,Xiaowei Zhou,Zhu Liu 대한금속·재료학회 2024 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.20 No.2

Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) have been employed as supporting materials for Pt, Ag, and Au nanoparticles (NPs) in theoxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The NPs Pt, Ag, and Au have been hydrothermally coated on HCS uniformly. The diameterof the Pt, Ag and Au NPs ranges between 11 and 32 nm, with the loading of 4.58, 4.73, and 4.07 wt.%, respectively. Itis found that Pt, Ag, and Au/HCS exhibit stable catalytic activity after 5000 CV scanning and follow a four-electron routein the ORR. Among them, Tafel plots show that Ag/HCS has the fastest kinetic rates and Pt/HCS has the largest eff ectiveactive area from CV curve. Hence HCS provides a stable supportive material for Pt, Ag, Au nanoparticle catalysts in theORR due to its nanopores structure and large surface area.

      • Impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty on the Outward Foreign Direct Investment of Chinese Firms

Yuhan Meng,Gahee Bak,Hongshik Lee The International Academy of Global Business and T 2023 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.19 No.5

Purpose - This study empirically investigated the effect of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) on the OFDI of Chinese firms. It also explores other factors influencing OFDI, such as market potential, economic openness, firm size, profitability, and the importance of control variables in the analysis. Design/Methodology/Approach - The panel data was established from 2004 to 2020, and a fixed-effects model was adopted for empirical analysis. EPU data was used as the main explanatory variable, and country-level variables such as overseas market potential, per capita GDP, and degree of economic openness, and firm-level variables such as firm size, capital structure, and return on total assets were applied as control variables. Findings - The results of regression using a fixed-effects model suggest that rising policy uncertainty in both Chinese and foreign economies reduces Chinese OFDI. OFDI’s decisions were also found to be influenced by a firm’s characteristics. This negative relationship is influenced by capital flow restrictions, financing constraints, and a focus on the home market. Additionally, foreign economic policy uncertainty (FEPU) in target countries also has a negative impact on Chinese firm OFDI, influenced by currency risk, policy restrictions, and risk assessment, making firms more cautious of cross-border investments. Research Implications - To promote Chinese firm Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI), the Chinese government needs to provide a stable and predictable policy environment, as economic policy uncertainty negatively affects OFDI. Additionally, the analysis highlights the importance of understanding and mastering foreign market conditions, including financial policies, legal systems, infrastructure, and business environments, before making OFDI decisions.

      • Contrast Enhancement of Medical Images by Combining Fuzzy C Means Clustering and Linear Scaling-up Mapping

        Yuhan Wu,Joonhyeon Jeon 한국통신학회 2018 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.1

The vast majority of medical images (CT, MRI) have a common characteristic of low contrast and poor details. Conventional enhancement techniques histogram equalization is difficult to achieve a satisfactory effect to the medical images. In this paper, an effective method is presented for improving the visual quality of the medical image. The basic idea of the proposed method is to extract important representative pixels by using the fuzzy c means clustering (FCM) algorithm, and then, the extracted representative pixels are transformed through a new intensity distribution by using a designed algorithm called linear scaling-up mapping function. The results show that the proposed method provides an excellent performance for the high contrast and rich detail features of medical images.

      • Management of Input Uncertainty in Performance Assessment of Deep Geological Repository

        Yuhan Kim,Miseon Jeong,Haeryong Jeong,Gyung Hwa Cho,Sang-soo Baek,JongCheol Pyo 한국방사성폐기물학회 2023 한국방사성폐기물학회 학술논문요약집 Vol.21 No.2

The deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste requires careful consideration due to its exceptionally long-term implications, making long-term impact assessments essential. However, evaluating the long-term effects of deep geological repositories using performance assessment models is accompanied by various sources of uncertainty, including uncertainties about the future, model uncertainties, and uncertainties associated with input data. These multifaceted uncertainties arise from factors such as a lack of current knowledge, contributing to a complex web of unpredictability. Managing, mitigating, and ultimately eliminating these uncertainties is crucial for ensuring the performance and safety of deep geological repositories. Currently, the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) is developing a complex behavior model that incorporates Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) phenomena within the disposal system using PFLOTRAN. To address model uncertainties and furthermore input data uncertainties for this intricate model, an automated sensitivity analysis system has been developed. This automated system operates without human intervention, facilitating tasks such as automatic parameter adjustments and the quantification of uncertainties. Furthermore, this system aids in identifying key factors characterized by substantial uncertainties. Through this system, it is possible to examine concentration distributions in each components of the deep disposal facility in response to changes in input data and to identify factors with significant uncertainties. The sensitivity results and key uncertainty factors obtained through this system are intended to be used for optimizing uncertainties in future research and development.
