Bipolar disorder (BD) is a major psychiatric disorder that is easily misdiagnosed. Patient adherence to a treatment regimen is of utmost importance for successful outcomes in BD. Several trials of antipsychotics suggested that depot antipsychotics, including long-acting first- and second-generation agents, are effective in preventing non-adherence, partial adherence, and in reducing relapse in BD. Various long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are available, including fluphenazine decanoate, haloperidol decanoate, olanzapine pamoate, risperidone microspheres, paliperidone palmitate, and aripiprazole monohydrate. Due to the increasing number of BD patients receiving LAI antipsychotics, treatment guidelines have been developed. However, the clinical applicability of LAI antipsychotics remains a global cause for concern, particularly in Asian countries. Expert physicians from Taiwan participated in a consensus meeting, which was held to review key areas based on both current literature and clinical practice. The purpose of this meeting was to generate a practical and implementable set of recommendations for LAI antipsychotic use to treat BD; target patient groups, dosage, administration, and adverse effects were considered. Experts recommended using LAI antipsychotics in patients with schizophrenia, rapid cycling BD, BD I, and bipolar-type schizoaffective disorder. LAI antipsychotic use was recommended in BD patients with the following characteristics: multiple episodes and low adherence; seldom yet serious episodes; low adherence potential per a physician’s clinical judgment; preference for injectable agents over oral agents; and multiple oral agent users still experiencing residual symptoms.

Objective: Previous single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies have demonstrated that co-injection of radiotracers 99mTc-TRODAT and 123IBZM can assess both presynaptic, dopamine transporters (DATs), and postsynaptic, dopamine D2/D3 receptors, markers of dopaminergic system simultaneously. The aim of this study was to determine both DATs and dopamine D2/D3 receptors in drug naïve schizophrenic patients. Methods: Severn drug naïve schizophrenic patients and eleven age-matched healthy controls were recruited. Each subject received one SPECT measurement after intravenous co-administration of 99mTc-TRODAT and 123IBZM and one brain MRI scan. A ratio equilibrium model was applied to calculate the specific uptake ratio (SUR) which corresponds to the ratio of Bmax (receptor density) and KD (affinity). Results: The results showed that the SUR of DATs binding was not significantly different between healthy controls and drug naïve schizophrenic patients (2.92±0.62 vs. 2.65±0.27, p=0.052) and, however, the SUR of dopamine D2/D3 receptors binding was significantly lower in drug naïve schizophrenic patients than those in healthy controls (2.79±0.54 vs. 3.90±0.58, p=0.001). Additionally, there was a significant correlation between left and right binding for both DATs (r=0.80, p=0.003) and dopamine D2/D3 receptors (r=0.96, p=0.000) in healthy controls but not seen in drug naïve schizophrenic patients (r=0.54, p=0.20 for DATs, r=0.70, p=0.08 for dopamine D2/D3 receptors). Conclusion: This study provides evidences to support the idea that abnormalities of dopaminergic system in schizophrenia and further elucidates the disruption of inter-hemispheric interaction of postsynaptic and presynaptic markers.

Towards the 21st century, the whole world is regarded as one market. Globalization is spreading all over the world as many cosmetics companies pioneering new market abroad, overcoming relatively limited domestic markets. Korean cosmetics companies are not the exception and they are aiming Chinese consumer market, the largest one in Asia, which is growing steadily since government’s open door policy. So, the necessity to compare and figure out the difference between Korean and Chinese consumer’s cosmetics buying behavior is very high for those companies that have their eyes on the Chinese Market. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare buying behavior between Korean and Chinese female consumers related to Korean cosmetics brand level. Cosmetics buying behavior is examined in 4 areas; purchasing motives, information sources, purchasing criteria, and the level of satisfaction. Subjects were selected through a convenient sample technique and a questionnaire was developed in Korean and Chinese by translation and back translation method. Data were collected from the sample of 187 out of 233 in Beijing for Chinese female consumers, and 188 out of 200 in Pusan for Korean female consumers. Respondents’ age varied from 20’s to 50’s. Korean cosmetics brands were divided into high /low levels; low brand level included Micha, The face shop, and Laneige while high brand level included Sulhwasu, O’hui, and The history of who. Among many types of cosmetics, this study focused on the basic types of cosmetics product such as lotion, moisture cream, nutrition cream, mask pack with the exception of color based cosmetics products. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and cluster analysis using SPSS 20.0. Respondents were divided into 4 groups: Korean high brand purchasing consumers, Korean Low brand purchasing consumers, Chinese high brand purchasing consumers, and Chinese low brand purchasing consumers. 1. For purchase motives, Chinese consumers affected by Korean celebrities and had more motives to experience Korean cosmetics. To relax and to relieve from stress was the main reasons to buy Korean cosmetics for Chinese high brand consumers. Price was the main reason to buy Korean cosmetics for both low brand purchasing groups. 2. For information sources, Chinese consumers had tendency to collect information from personal relations such as friends and family. Korean and Chinese low brand consumers used internet advertising. Chinese high brand consumers collected information from department salesman. Korean high brand consumers showed lowest use of any kinds of information sources. 3. Korean high brand group put on importance on color and scent as cosmetics purchase criteria. Chinese high brand consumers showed importance on brand image, ingredients, containers/packing, skin fit, and feeling. Korean and Chinese low brand groups have importance on brand image, ingredients, and skin fit. 4. Concerned satisfaction level, Korean high brand group showed lowest satisfaction level. Chinese consumers had satisfied with container design and feelings.
Cytotoxic Property of Ultraviolet-induced Rice Phytoalexins to Human Colon Carcinoma HCT-116 Cells
Park, Jong-Hwa,Fu, Yuan-Yuan,Chung, In Sik,Hahn, Tae-Ryong,Cho, Man-Ho The Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistr 2013 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.56 No.2
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation increased the cytotoxic effect of rice leaf extract on human colon carcinoma HCT-116 cells, suggesting that the production of cytotoxic compounds in rice leaves are induced by UV treatment. To identify cytotoxic agents in UV-treated rice leaves, the phenolic compound peaks prominently increased by UV treatment were isolated using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The isolated compounds were identified as N-trans-cinnamoyltyramine, N-benzoyltryptamine, and sakuranetin using NMR and mass spectrometric techniques. N-Benzoyltryptamine and sakuranetin were previously reported as rice phytoalexins, and N-trans-cinnamoyltyramine was first isolated from rice. N-Benzoyltryptamine and sakuranetin were found to inhibit the growth of HCT-116 cells with $IC_{50}$ values of $89.2{\pm}4.8$ and $68.8{\pm}5.2{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, indicating that these phytoalexins are cytotoxic agents in the UV-treated rice leaves. These results suggest that rice phytoalexins are potent anti-cancer agents and UV-treated rice leaves are valuable source for therapeutic agents.

A series of new bis-thienylanthracene derivatives D1 ~ D5 containing 9,10-antharcene moiety in the center and 2-methylenemalonotitrile or 2-cyanoacrylic acid functional group on the terminal thiophenes were synthesized and characterized by ^1H-NMR and high-resolution mass spectroscopy. Their optical, electrochemical, and thermal properties were measured. They have absorption λmax in the range of 437 ~ 480 nm and εmax of 7.4 ×10^3 ~ 2.0 × 10^4 M^(−1)cm^(−1). The substitution of 2-cyanoacrylic acid group allows greater value of εmax than that of 2-methylenemalonotitrile. TGA curves showed that D4 and D5 which have 2-cyanoacrylic acid functional group on the terminal thiophene(s) exhibit good thermal stability and D4 was thermally stable up to 400 ^oC. Their optical properties and LUMO energy levels measured suggest that they can serve as potential candidates for electron donor materials of organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) or D4 and D5 which contain 2-cyanoacrylic acid group can be used as organic dyes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Lindane is a broad-spectrum persistent organochlorine pesticide that has been used to control pests for many years. In this study, its toxic mechanisms in adult zebrafish were investigated using targeted metabolomics with GC-MS/MS and non-targeted metabolomics with LC-Orbitrap-MS/MS. Zebrafish was exposed to lindane in water for 48 h in three groups: control, low exposure (1/10 LC50) and high exposure ( LC50). In the zebrafish exposed to low concentration of lindane, 2.24–3.98 mg/kg of lindane were determined, while 35.67–56.46 mg/kg were observed in the zebrafish exposed to high concentration. A total of 118 metabolites were identified from 394 metabolites on GC-MS/MS and 45 metabolites were selected as biomarkers. A total of 62 metabolites were identified on LC-Orbitrap-MS/MS and 7 metabolites were selected as biomarkers. Three groups were well separated on partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and a total of 52 metabolites in both the targeted and non-targeted metabolites were selected as biomarkers through VIP and ANOVA tests to construct a heatmap. Five metabolic pathways such as the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), histidine metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, alanine/aspartate/glutamate metabolism, and phenylalanine/tyrosine/tryptophan biosynthesis, were observed to show toxicologically significant alterations. Oxidative stress was also confirmed through MDA and ROS assays. Such perturbations of the metabolic pathways of zebrafish caused by the exposure to lindane resulted in significant toxicological effects.
